Book excerpt: Due to its tunability and high efficiency, the Free Electron Laser (FEL) has proven to be a versatile coherent light source for a variety of applications in science, industry and defense. This unique capability provides the scientific community with its first realistic source for an X ray laser. This thesis will initially consider the basics of the FEL and its applications as a defensive weapon. In a technological era where the missile has maximized its physical capabilities to the point that defensive missiles are physically incapable of achieving a kill in protection of the fleet, speed of light weapons are the next logical step in defense. Next we shall explore the theory behind the Free Electron Laser and the amplification of a beam of light by transferring energy from an electron beam. In conclusion, we examine the proposal to utilize the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) linac as an electron beam source for a high power X ray FEL 1. Compressing the electron pulse to sub-picosecond length yields a peak current of 2500 amps. An electron beam energy of 7 GeV would result in a radiation wavelength of 4 nm and peak optical power in the gigawatt range. In order to examine this proposal, single-mode phase space simulations are run to look at the effectiveness of electron bunching and the onset of saturation. Longitudinal multimode simulations show coherence development and the trapped-particle instability. Transverse multimode simulations examine the effects of optical guiding and mode distortion.

Book excerpt: The design status and R and D plan of a 1.5 Angstrom SASE-FEL at SLAC, called the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), are described. The LCLS utilizes one third of the SLAC linac for the acceleration of electrons to about 15 GeV. The FEL radiation is produced in a long undulator and is directed to an experimental area for its utilization. The LCLS is designed to produce 300 fsec long radiation pulses at the wavelength of 1.5 Angstrom with 9 GW peak power. This radiation has much higher brightness and coherence, as well as shorter pulses, than present 3rd generation sources. It is shown that such leap in performance is now within reach, and is made possible by the advances in the physics and technology of photo-injectors, linear accelerators, insertion devices and free-electron lasers.

Book excerpt: A first Design Study Report has recently been completed [1] for the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), a proposal to build an x-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) as a single pass SASE (Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission) amplifier. The proposal includes the use of a very low emittance electron beam accelerated up to 15 GeV by the last third of the SLAC linac to produce sub-picosecond x-ray pulses with high brightness and full transverse coherence in a 112-meter long undulator. Many aspects of the FEL design have been analyzed with FEL simulation codes. The paper discusses some of the results of these aspects, i.e. temporal x-ray pulse structure and power sprectrum, trajectory errors and effects of undulator beam tube wakefields.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), in collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the University of California at Los Angeles, is proposing to build a Free-Electron-Laser (FEL) R and D facility operating in the self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) mode in the wavelength range 1.5--15 Å. This FEL, called Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), utilizes the SLAC linac and produces sub-picosecond pulses of short wavelength x-rays with very high peak brightness and full transverse coherence. In this report, the Design Team has established performance parameters for all the major components of the LCLS and developed a layout of the entire system. Chapter 1 is the Executive Summary. Chapter 2 (Overview) provides a brief description of each of the major sections of the LCLS, from the rf photocathode gun, through the experimental stations and electron beam dump. Chapter 3 describes the scientific case for the LCLS. Chapter 4 provides a review of the principles of the FEL physics that the LCLS is based on, and Chapter 5 discusses the choice of the system's physical parameters. Chapters 6 through 10 describe in detail each major element of the system. Chapters 11 through 13 respectively cover undulator controls, mechanical alignment, and radiation issues.

Book excerpt: The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the University of California at Los Angeles, have collaborated to create a conceptual design for a Free-Electron-Laser (FEL) R & D facility operating in the wavelength range 1.5-15 Å. This FEL, called the ''Linac Coherent Light Source'' (LCLS), utilizes the SLAC linac and produces sub-picosecond pulses of short wavelength x-rays with very high peak brightness and full transverse coherence. The first two-thirds of the SLAC linac are used for injection into the PEP-II storage rings. The last one-third will be converted to a source of electrons for the LCLS. The electrons will be transported to the SLAC Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB) Facility, which will be extended to house a 122-m undulator system. In passing through the undulators, the electrons will be bunched by the force of their own synchrotron radiation to produce an intense, spatially coherent beam of x-rays, tunable in energy from 0.8 keV to 8 keV. The LCLS will include two experiment halls as well as x-ray optics and infrastructure necessary to make use of this x-ray beam for research in a variety of disciplines such as atomic physics, materials science, plasma physics and biosciences. This Conceptual Design Report, the authors believe, confirms the feasibility of constructing an x-ray FEL based on the SLAC linac.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is an x-ray Free-electron Laser (FEL) being commissioned at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). Recent beam measurements have shown that, using the LCLS injector-linac-compressors, the beam emittance is very small at 20 pC. In this paper we perform start-to-end simulations of the entire accelerator including the FEL undulator and study the FEL performance versus the bunch charge. At 20 pC charge, these calculations associated with the measured beam parameters suggest the possibility of generating a longitudinally coherent single x-ray spike with 2-femtosecond (fs) duration at a wavelength of 1.5 nm. At 100 pC charge level, our simulations show an x-ray pulse with 10 femtosecond duration and up to 1012 photons at a wavelength of 1.5 Å. These results open exciting possibilities for ultrafast science and single shot molecular imaging.

Book excerpt: A high current, high power X ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) using the Stanford linear accelerator (SLAC) as an electron beam source has been proposed. Such a system will provide the scientific community with its first realistic X ray laser. One dramatic use a hard X ray laser light at the proposed wavelength of 1.5 Angstrom would be to image DNA base pairs. With an accelerator already in place, the major cost of developing the SLAC system would be in the manufacturing of the undulator. The cost in building an undulator is proportional to its length. This thesis uses numerical simulation to evaluate the effectiveness of an FEL klystron in order to decrease the length of the undulator with a dispersive section. Simulations show that the quality of the electron beam injected into the undulator can greatly effect the ability of an FEL to produce coherent light, and is a factor in determining the length of an undulator needed for saturation. In the high gain FEL (such as proposed at SLAG), a dispersive section is sensitive to energy spread and may adversely affect the gain of the system. For moderate to low energy spread, it is found that a klystron is useful in shortening the undulator length. By examining how the strength of a klystron dispersive section affects the gain of a high-current system, we determine a critical strength above which the klystron can be detrimental. A dispersive section that is either too strong or not strong enough will result in less than optimum gain, or an increase in the required length of an undulator. Single mode, phase space simulations are used to investigate the effect on electron bunching and the onset of saturation. Longitudinal multimode simulations show the resulting coherence development.
