Download or read book Water Resource Systems Planning and Management written by Daniel P. Loucks and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 4.0 license. This revised, updated textbook presents a systems approach to the planning, management, and operation of water resources infrastructure in the environment. Previously published in 2005 by UNESCO and Deltares (Delft Hydraulics at the time), this new edition, written again with contributions from Jery R. Stedinger, Jozef P. M. Dijkman, and Monique T. Villars, is aimed equally at students and professionals. It introduces readers to the concept of viewing issues involving water resources as a system of multiple interacting components and scales. It offers guidelines for initiating and carrying out water resource system planning and management projects. It introduces alternative optimization, simulation, and statistical methods useful for project identification, design, siting, operation and evaluation and for studying post-planning issues. The authors cover both basin-wide and urban water issues and present ways of identifying and evaluating alternatives for addressing multiple-purpose and multi-objective water quantity and quality management challenges. Reinforced with cases studies, exercises, and media supplements throughout, the text is ideal for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in water resource planning and management as well as for practicing planners and engineers in the field.

Book Synopsis Analysis of Water Resource Systems by : L. Votruba
Download or read book Analysis of Water Resource Systems written by L. Votruba and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1988-09-01 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water resource systems research provides a basis for rational water management in large basins. The design and operation of water resource systems are both the most complicated and the most important tasks of water management. This book deals with the basic issues involved in the application of systems sciences to water management. A survey of the systems sciences (the general systems theory, cybernetics, systems engineering, operations research and systems analysis) is presented, as well as the methods for water resource systems analysis and for water resource systems analysis and for their evaluation. The mathematical methods used in systems theory have been given detailed treatment. Linear and dynamic programming have been used as models of optimal programming. Since many practical tasks require the simulation models of water resource systems, apart from their principles and a detailed description, the simulation language for computing programming has been included. Other methods of operations research and their application to water resource systems have been analysed and evaluated. Some of these are: models of inventory theory, models of queuing theory, graphs, network analysis, and some special methods like the out-of-kilter algorithm, the chance-constrained model and the chance-constrained model combined with the simluation model. One chapter is devoted to information and information systems in water management. The final part of the book deals with prospects for water resource systems development. The book is intended for engineers and decision-makers involved in projects, operation and research. However, it can be used by students in high schools, technical universities and by graduate students. It will serve as an up-to-date source of information about the principles and methodology of water resource analysis and design.

Book Synopsis Optimal Expansion of a water Resources system by : D.T. O'Laoghaire
Download or read book Optimal Expansion of a water Resources system written by D.T. O'Laoghaire and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal Expansion of a Water Resources System describes a methodology that can be used in water resources planning taking into account both water quantity and quality while still remaining computationally tractable. It is concerned with the optimal expansion of a realistic water resources system to meet an increasing demand for municipal and industrial use, irrigation, energy, and recreation over a planning horizon of Tmax years. This book comprises six chapters, with an introductory chapter that discusses such topics as development of water resources, the systems approach to solving water resources problems, and techniques for the optimization of a water resources system. The following chapters then discuss formulating the problem of the optimal expansion of an existing water resources system; a procedure for solving the optimal expansion problem; and application of the optimization algorithm to a water resources system. The remaining chapters discuss the sensitivity of planning decisions in river basin management; and how to incorporate water quality and pollution considerations into the model of the water resources system. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of systems philosophy and water quantity studies.

Book excerpt: Now in an extensively updated fourth edition, this essential text offers a comprehensive survey of all aspects of water resources planning and management. Utilizing an integrated water resources management (IWRM) framework, the authors show how this approach can clarify and help resolve resource management problems in ways that take into account complicated and interconnected social, economic, and environmental needs. Spanning the full planning process, the book considers legal and administrative issues; economic and forecasting factors; water quality, quantity, supply, use and demand; and model applications. The authors’ goal throughout is to provide a practical foundation for improving ecological and human environmental systems for practitioners and students alike.
