Download or read book Quantum Simulators written by T. Calarco and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last century has been characterized by the development of information theory and the consequent transformative impact of new technologies on societies around the world. It seems likely that the tremendous progress in nanoscience – the ability to manipulate microscopic systems at the level of a single atom – and the emergence of quantum information science, will be the key components of the next revolution; that of the new quantum technologies. Indeed, the ability to manipulate and control quantum systems has already found a variety of potential applications, ranging from the development of molecular nanoscale machines which exploit quantum coherence for their functioning, to metrological schemes where quantum effects are used to enhance the accuracy of measurement and detection systems to achieve higher statistical precision than is possible using purely classical approaches. This book presents the proceedings of the Enrico Fermi Summer School on Quantum Simulators (Course 198) held in Varenna, Italy, 22-27 July 2016. Topics covered included: cold atoms in optical lattices; trapped ions; solid state implementations; quantum many-body physics; quantum photonics; hybrid quantum systems; and transport phenomena. The book will be of interest to all those whose work is connected to the rapidly growing field of quantum technologies.
Book Synopsis The BCS-BEC Crossover and the Unitary Fermi Gas by : Wilhelm Zwerger
Download or read book The BCS-BEC Crossover and the Unitary Fermi Gas written by Wilhelm Zwerger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-22 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent experimental and theoretical progress has elucidated the tunable crossover, in ultracold Fermi gases, from BCS-type superconductors to BEC-type superfluids. The BCS-BEC Crossover and the Unitary Fermi Gas is a collaborative effort by leading international experts to provide an up-to-date introduction and a comprehensive overview of current research in this fast-moving field. It is now understood that the unitary regime that lies right in the middle of the crossover has remarkable universal properties, arising from scale invariance, and has connections with fields as diverse as nuclear physics and string theory. This volume will serve as a first point of reference for active researchers in the field, and will benefit the many non-specialists and graduate students who require a self-contained, approachable exposition of the subject matter.

Many applications of these approaches to simple and important physical phenomena are given to illustrate the potential and limitations of each method.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Confinement Problem by : Jeff Greensite
Download or read book An Introduction to the Confinement Problem written by Jeff Greensite and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the confinement problem, which concerns the behavior of non-abelian gauge theories, and the force which is mediated by gauge fields, at large distances. The word “confinement” in the context of hadronic physics originally referred to the fact that quarks and gluons appear to be trapped inside mesons and baryons, from which they cannot escape. There are other, and possibly deeper meanings that can be attached to the term, and these will be explored in this book. Although the confinement problem is far from solved, much is now known about the general features of the confining force, and there are a number of very well motivated theories of confinement which are under active investigation. This volume gives a both pedagogical and concise introduction and overview of the main ideas in this field, their attractive features, and, as appropriate, their shortcomings. This second edition summarizes some of the developments in this area which have occurred since the first edition of this book appeared in 2011. These include new results in the caloron/dyon picture of confinement, in functional approaches, and in studies of the Yang-Mills vacuum wave functional. Special attention, in two new chapters, is given to recent numerical investigations of the center vortex theory, and to the varieties of confinement which may exist in gauge-Higgs theories. Reviews of the first edition: “This is indeed a very good book. I enjoyed reading it and... I learned a lot from it.... It is definitely a research book that provides readers with a guide to the most updated confinement models.” (Giuseppe Nardelli, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2012 d) “The book is beautifully produced with special emphasis on the relevance of center symmetry and lattice formulation as well as an introduction to current research on confinement.” (Paninjukunnath Achuthan, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1217, 2011)
