Among them heterogeneity in saline aquifer can seriously influence design of injection wells, CO2 injection rate, CO2 plume migration, storage capacity, and potential leakage and risk assessment. This study applies indicator geostatistics, transition probability and Markov chain model at the Rock Springs Uplift, Wyoming generating facies-based heterogeneous fields for porosity and permeability in target saline aquifer (Pennsylvanian Weber sandstone) and surrounding rocks (Phosphoria, Madison and cap-rock Chugwater). A multiphase flow simulator FEHM is then used to model injection of CO2 into the target saline aquifer involving field-scale heterogeneity. The results reveal that (1) CO2 injection rates in different injection wells significantly change with local permeability distributions; (2) brine production rates in different pumping wells are also significantly impacted by the spatial heterogeneity in permeability; (3) liquid pressure evolution during and after CO2 injection in saline aquifer varies greatly for different realizations of random permeability fields, and this has potential important effects on hydraulic fracturing of the reservoir rock, reactivation of pre-existing faults and the integrity of the cap-rock; (4) CO2 storage capacity estimate for Rock Springs Uplift is 6614 ± 256 Mt at 95% confidence interval, which is about 36% of previous estimate based on homogeneous and isotropic storage formation; (5) density profiles show that the density of injected CO2 below 3 km is close to that of the ambient brine with given geothermal gradient and brine concentration, which indicates CO2 plume can sink to the deep before reaching thermal equilibrium with brine. Finally, we present uncertainty analysis of CO2 leakage into overlying formations due to heterogeneity in both the target saline aquifer and surrounding formations. This uncertainty in leakage will be used to feed into risk assessment modeling.

CO2 injection into reservoirs may lead to mechanical, chemical, and hydrological effects on the geological formations. This Ph.D. research primarily focuses on quantifying and analyzing geomechanical properties and the effect of CO2 on geomechanical properties of reservoir rocks. The research includes: 1) select and prepare rock samples (Weber Sandstone) from Rock Springs Uplift, Wyoming; 2) design and conduct geomechanical experiments; 3) improve the estimations of geomechanical properties of rocks; 4) develop the analytical model describing the nonlinear rock failure behavior; 5) investigate the effect of compliant pores on reservoir rocks under different stress states; 6) quantify and analyze the changes in geomechanical properties of reservoir rocks due to CO2. Major conclusions drawn from this research were summarized. First, a new method proposed for estimating elastic constants and crack propagation stress thresholds significantly eliminates bias due to both user-defined data interval and poor data resolution on the stress-strain data analysis procedures. Second, a generalized power-law failure criterion was derived in terms of the rock strength properties and validated through published test data for different rock types. Third, the nonlinear pore pressure-volumetric strain relationship at low confining pressure changes to a linear behavior at high confining pressure. Fourth, the unstable crack growth region governed by the initial compliant porosity is independent of the differential pressure. Fifth, the effect of CO2 on geomechanical properties of Weber Sandstone in the linear elastic, nonlinear plastic, and post-failure regime is limited. However, a consistent change in Mohr failure coefficients due to CO2 was observed.

Book excerpt: The geological CO2 sequestration project at the Wyoming Rock Springs Uplift site is anticipated to result in the injection of 127.5 million tonnes (1.7 million tonnes per year) of CO2 per well into the Tensleep/Weber Sandstone and Madison Limestone formations over a 75 year period (Surdam et al., 2009). Large amounts of water must be extracted from the formations in order to maintain reservoir forces under fracture pressure limits. Sequestration of CO2 within the two aquifers would require approximately 75 million tonnes (1 million tonnes per year) of saline water to be removed from the reservoirs. An obvious challenge for this project is to determine how to manage the displaced water in order to prevent adverse environmental impacts. Therefore, the potential impacts of the displaced water on surface waters, soils, and vegetation ecosystems, where large amounts of displaced waters are utilized, were assessed in this study. Water treatment technologies were investigated to determine possible processes that might be implemented to reduce the salt content of the displaced water that would allow for other uses. Reverse osmosis (RO) and multi-stage flash (MSF) processes were considered the most promising desalination technologies, with RO more cost-efficient compared to MSF based on historical data. Consequently, it is imperative that possible scenarios be developed whereby the treated waters can be utilized for beneficial uses, which include: industrial--power plants or water treatment plants, oil and gas industry, and soda ash production; agricultural--irrigation and livestock; ecological--enhanced in-stream flow or fisheries, wetlands or artificial wetlands, injection for aquifer storage or recovery and recreation areas; domestic--drinking water, dust abasement, fire-fighting and vehicles wash; and others--mineral extraction.

Geologic sequestration has been identified as one possible avenue for storing CO2, which would otherwise have been discharged to the atmosphere. The Rock Springs Uplift (RSU) in southwestern Wyoming has been identified as a candidate site for geologic sequestration of CO2. The RSU site contains two deep saline aquifers into which CO2 can be injected and stored: The Weber Sandstone and Upper Madison Limestone Formations. Sequestration of CO2 into these two formations is expected to displace approximately 700,000 gallons per day of highly saline water (avg. total dissolved solids ~95,000 mg L−1). For geologic sequestration to be successful, or even a practical option at the RSU site, the displaced water must be managed in such a way so that the carbon balance (CO2 sequestered - CO2 produced during treatment) is favorable and economics affordable. Three distinct water treatment alternatives were developed for managing and facilitating the beneficial reuse of the displaced water at the RSU site and included: desalination using forward osmosis, desalination using mechanical distillation and disposal using wind-aided evaporation. A present worth cost calculation for each alternative was developed which included the capital cost and the yearly operation and maintenance cost. The carbon footprint expected from each alternative was also evaluated. Both the present worth cost and carbon footprint should be considered when determining the most appropriate treatment alternative for this water.

The specific activities included: (1) Measurement of reservoir--conditions drainage and imbibition relative permeabilities, irreducible brine and residual mixed scCO2 saturations, and relative permeability scanning curves (hysteresis) in rock samples from RSU; (2) Characterization of wettability through measurements of contact angles and interfacial tensions under reservoir conditions; (3) Development of physically--based dynamic core--scale pore network model; (4) Development of new, improved high-- performance modules for the UW--team simulator to provide new capabilities to the existing model to include hysteresis in the relative permeability functions, geomechanical deformation and an equilibrium calculation (Both pore-- and core--scale models were rigorously validated against well--characterized core-- flooding experiments); and (5) An analysis of long term permanent trapping of mixed scCO2 through high--resolution numerical experiments and analytical solutions. The two goals of the simulation study were as follows: optimize the CO2 sequestration strategy within geological constraints, and examines the long-term fate of CO2 stored in this formation. Commercial numerical simulators and research simulators are used in the simulation study, and calibrated simulation results from the research simulators with those from the commercial simulator, usually a robust approach. The new research results and on-site observations were integrated into the research simulator for specific examination of CO2 sequestration and storage at site.

A probabilistic approach to the inverse problem provides the probability distribution of rock and fluid properties given the measured geophysical data and allows quantifying the uncertainty of the predicted results. The reservoir characterization problem includes both discrete properties, such as facies or rock types, and continuous properties, such as porosity, mineral volumes, fluid saturations, seismic velocities and density. Seismic Reservoir Modeling: Theory, Examples and Algorithms presents the main concepts and methods of seismic reservoir characterization. The book presents an overview of rock physics models that link the petrophysical properties to the elastic properties in porous rocks and a review of the most common geostatistical methods to interpolate and simulate multiple realizations of subsurface properties conditioned on a limited number of direct and indirect measurements based on spatial correlation models. Book excerpt: Carbon capture and storage locations are being investigated throughout the state of Wyoming, USA, in preparation for sequestration of greenhouse gases. At potential storage sites, confining units must be identified that are capable of ensuring stored carbon dioxide remains in place at depth. An investigation of the Triassic Thaynes and Dinwoody formations was conducted to evaluate confining potential on the Rock Springs Uplift (RSU). Analyzing a known seal, the Thaynes Formation, using data from core, petrographic sections, and strontium isotopes aided in identifying characteristics of confining units. The Thaynes Formation was used as an analogue to investigate the confining potential of the Dinwoody Formation including outcrop, core, petrographic section, and stable isotope data that were used to confirm depositional setting. Triaxial and mercury injection capillary pressure tests were conducted to reveal the maximum accommodation strain and minimum and maximum carbon dioxide column heights. Data suggest the Dinwoody Formation can accommodate large quantities of carbon dioxide but further investigation of the unit and modeling is suggested before injection on the RSU.
