Book excerpt: Many important phenomena in fluid motion are evident in vortex flow, i.e., flows in which vortical structures are significant in determining the whole flow. This book, which consists of lectures given at a NATO ARW held in Grenoble (France) in June 1992, provides an up-to-date account of current research in the study of these phenomena by means of numerical methods and mathematical modelling. Such methods include Eulerian methods (finite difference, spectral and wavelet methods) as well as Lagrangian methods (contour dynamics, vortex methods) and are used to study such topics as 2- or 3-dimensional turbulence, vorticity generation by solid bodies, shear layers and vortex sheets, and vortex reconnection. For researchers and graduate students in computational fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, and applied mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph considers the motion of incompressible fluids described by the Navier-Stokes equations with large inflow and outflow, and proves the existence of global regular solutions without any restrictions on the magnitude of the initial velocity, the external force, or the flux. To accomplish this, some assumptions are necessary: The flux is close to homogeneous, and the initial velocity and the external force do not change too much along the axis of the cylinder. This is achieved by utilizing a sophisticated method of deriving energy type estimates for weak solutions and global estimates for regular solutions—an approach that is wholly unique within the existing literature on the Navier-Stokes equations. To demonstrate these results, three main steps are followed: first, the existence of weak solutions is shown; next, the conditions guaranteeing the regularity of weak solutions are presented; and, lastly, global regular solutions are proven. This volume is ideal for mathematicians whose work involves the Navier-Stokes equations, and, more broadly, researchers studying fluid mechanics.

Book excerpt: This updated/augmented second edition retains it class-tested content and pedagogy as a core text for graduate courses in advanced fluid mechanics and applied science. The new edition adds revised sections, clarification, problems, and chapter extensions including a rewritten section on Schauder bases for turbulent pipe flow, coverage of Cantwell’s mixing length closure for turbulent pipe flow, and a section on the variational Hessian. Consisting of two parts, the first provides an introduction and general theory of fully developed turbulence, where treatment of turbulence is based on the linear functional equation derived by E. Hopf governing the characteristic functional that determines the statistical properties of a turbulent flow. In this section, Professor Kollmann explains how the theory is built on divergence free Schauder bases for the phase space of the turbulent flow and the space of argument vector fields for the characteristic functional. The second segment, presented over subsequent chapters, is devoted to mapping methods, homogeneous turbulence based upon the hypotheses of Kolmogorov and Onsager, intermittency, structural features of turbulent shear flows and their recognition. Adds section on Plancherel’s theorem and a detailed problem on analytic solution of functional differential equations; Extends chapter nine on characteristic functionals to greater explain the role of convection; Reinforces concepts with problems on the theory and particular examples of turbulent flows such as periodic pipe flow. . .

Book excerpt: This book contains a first systematic study of compressible fluid flows subject to stochastic forcing. The bulk is the existence of dissipative martingale solutions to the stochastic compressible Navier-Stokes equations. These solutions are weak in the probabilistic sense as well as in the analytical sense. Moreover, the evolution of the energy can be controlled in terms of the initial energy. We analyze the behavior of solutions in short-time (where unique smooth solutions exists) as well as in the long term (existence of stationary solutions). Finally, we investigate the asymptotics with respect to several parameters of the model based on the energy inequality. Contents Part I: Preliminary results Elements of functional analysis Elements of stochastic analysis Part II: Existence theory Modeling fluid motion subject to random effects Global existence Local well-posedness Relative energy inequality and weak–strong uniqueness Part III: Applications Stationary solutions Singular limits

Book excerpt: A classical problem in the field of mathematical fluid mechanics is the flow of a viscous incompressible fluid past a rigid body. In his doctoral thesis, Thomas Walter Eiter investigates time-periodic solutions to the associated Navier-Stokes equations when the body performs a non-trivial translation. The first part of the thesis is concerned with the question of existence of time-periodic solutions in the case of a non-rotating and of a rotating obstacle. Based on an investigation of the corresponding Oseen linearizations, new existence results in suitable function spaces are established. The second part deals with the study of spatially asymptotic properties of time-periodic solutions. For this purpose, time-periodic fundamental solutions to the Stokes and Oseen linearizations are introduced and investigated, and the concept of a time-periodic fundamental solution for the vorticity field is developed. With these results, new pointwise estimates of the velocity and the vorticity field associated to a time-periodic fluid flow are derived.

In this book, fluid mechanics is addressed from both physical and mathematical perspectives. As a first step, the basic theory of continuum mechanics is detailed, pointing out the different assumptions and approximations that lead to conservation laws. As a second step, scaling studies, dimensional analysis and similitude of the general equations help to introduce the inviscid Euler fluid approximation, the Stokes approximation of viscous flow and Prandtl’s boundary layer approximation. Lastly, the concepts of stability, turbulence and compressible flows are presented. Multiphysics approach of flows will provide readers with deeper insights into basic and applied research on complex processing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vortex methods have matured in recent years, offering an interesting alternative to finite difference and spectral methods for high resolution numerical solutions of the Navier Stokes equations. In the past three decades, research into the numerical analysis aspects of vortex methods has provided a solid mathematical background for understanding the accuracy and stability of the method. At the same time vortex methods retain their appealing physical character, which was the motivation for their introduction. This book presents and analyzes vortex methods as a tool for the direct numerical simulation of impressible viscous flows. It will interest graduate students and researchers in numerical analysis and fluid mechanics and also serve as an ideal textbook for courses in fluid dynamics.
