Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book provides a new method to estimate elastic-plastic strains via a series of linear elastic analyses. For a life prediction of structures subjected to variable loads, frequently encountered in mechanical and civil engineering, the cyclically accumulated deformation and the elastic plastic strain ranges are required. The Simplified Theory of Plastic Zones (STPZ) is a direct method which provides the estimates of these and all other mechanical quantities in the state of elastic and plastic shakedown. The STPZ is described in detail, with emphasis on the fact that not only scientists but engineers working in applied fields and advanced students are able to get an idea of the possibilities and limitations of the STPZ. Numerous illustrations and examples are provided to support the reader's understanding.

Book excerpt: The aim of Plasticity Theory is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the contemporary state of knowledge in basic plasticity theory and to its applications. It treats several areas not commonly found between the covers of a single book: the physics of plasticity, constitutive theory, dynamic plasticity, large-deformation plasticity, and numerical methods, in addition to a representative survey of problems treated by classical methods, such as elastic-plastic problems, plane plastic flow, and limit analysis; the problem discussed come from areas of interest to mechanical, structural, and geotechnical engineers, metallurgists and others. The necessary mathematics and basic mechanics and thermodynamics are covered in an introductory chapter, making the book a self-contained text suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students, as well as a reference for practitioners of solid mechanics.

Book excerpt: This book reviews problems in the mechanical behaviour of cyclically loaded metallic materials, primarily with regard to the nature of the fatigue process. The first edition of the book appeared in 1980. The present second edition represents a revised form of the original book and also covers recent developments in the field. As the book focuses on physical-metallurgical aspects, it occupies a unique and important position in the technical literature, which has so far been devoted mainly to engineering metal fatigue problems and their technical solution in specific practical cases. The book provides a compact review of current knowledge on physical metallurgical processes that accompany and affect the fatigue of metallic materials, and also presents the background for applying the new results to practical designing and to the selection of materials in engineering practice. The authors present an updated review of results from countries both in the east and the west and cover a relatively large field in a concise manner. The work will be of value to research workers and students following advanced and post-graduate courses in the fields of materials science and mechanical engineering.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the plastic property of materials, and the way in which structures made of such material behave under load. It is intended for civil, mechanical, electro-mechanical, marine, and aeronautical engineers for under-graduate or post-graduate courses or research, and professionals in industry. Professor Calladine, from long experience in teaching, research and industry, here delivers a readable and authoritative account of theory and applications. He presents the classical "perfect plasticity material" as a model of irreversible mechanical behaviour, using this perfect plasticity property to analyse a range of continuum structural problems and metal-forming processes relevant to engineering practice.

Book excerpt: Engineering Plasticity deals with certain features of the theory of plasticity that can be applied to engineering design. Topics covered range from specification of an ideal plastic material to the behavior of structures made of idealized elastic-plastic material, theorems of plastic theory, and rotating discs, along with torsion, indentation problems, and slip-line fields. This book consists of 12 chapters and begins by providing an engineering background for the theory of plasticity, with emphasis on the use of metals in structural engineering; the nature of physical theories; and the conceptual simplicity and power of plastic theory. The next chapter explains how to set up a model of the plastic behavior of metal for use in analysis and design of structures and forming processes, paying particular attention to the plastic deformation that occurs when a specimen of metal is stressed. Subsequent chapters focus on the behavior of a simple structure made of elastic-plastic material; theorems of plastic theory; rotating discs; and indentation problems. Torsion, slip-line fields, and circular plates under transverse loading are also discussed, together with wire-drawing and extrusion and the effects of changes in geometry on structure. This monograph is written primarily for engineering students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plastic Theory of Structures focuses on the use of plastic theory in design and shows how code requirements are related to theoretical considerations. More specifically, the effect of axial load and shear force on plastic moment capacity is examined, along with biaxial bending, frame and local instability, and the use of partial load factors. The significance of repeated loading in plastic design is also highlighted. Comprised of six chapters, this book begins with an overview of plastic failure and the behavior beyond the elastic limit (with particular emphasis on the failure loads) of structures in which resistance to bending action is the primary means by which the loads are supported. Attention is paid to how the collapse load factor of a given structure may be derived, that is, the structure has been analyzed in relation to plastic collapse. The reader is then introduced to methods of plastic analysis; plastic moments under shear force and axial load; and minimum weight design. The book also considers variable repeated loading before concluding with a chapter on stability and the influence of various structural parameters and appropriate methods for the estimation of failure loads. This monograph will be of interest to civil and structural engineers.

Book excerpt: Analysis and Mechanics contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Fracture held at the University of Waterloo in Canada in June 1977. The conference provided a forum for discussing fracture mechanics and analysis involving a wide variety of materials, particularly large structures. Topics covered range from crack growth to dynamic processes and stress intensity factors, along with fracture in nonlinear systems. Comprised of 64 chapters, this volume begins by describing a numerical approach for modeling stable crack growth and fracture criteria. The reader is then introduced to the continuum theory of dislocations and its application to fracture mechanics; initiation of crack propagation in ductile structures; and finite element analysis of an impact test. Subsequent chapters focus on stress and crack-displacement intensity factors in elastodynamics; plastic fracture analysis of a cracked cylinder under displacement controlled loading; energy considerations in dynamic crack propagation and arrest; and the use of the J integral to measure the resistance of mild steel to slow stable crack growth. This book will be of interest to mechanical and structural engineers.

Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of direct methods such as limit and shakedown analysis, which are intended to do away with the need for cumbersome step-by-step calculations and determine the loading limits of mechanical structures under monotone, cyclic or variable loading with unknown loading history. The respective contributions demonstrate how tremendous advances in numerical methods, especially in optimization, have contributed to the success of direct methods and their practical applicability to engineering problems in structural mechanics, pavement and general soil mechanics, as well as the design of composite materials. The content reflects the outcomes of the workshop “Direct Methods: Methodological Progress and Engineering Applications,” which was offered as a mini-symposium of PCM-CMM 2019, held in Cracow, Poland in September 2019.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When asked to start teaching a course on engineering fracture mechanics, I realized that a concise textbook, giving a general oversight of the field, did not exist. The explanation is undoubtedly that the subject is still in a stage of early development, and that the methodologies have still a very limited applicability. It is not possible to give rules for general application of fracture mechanics concepts. Yet our comprehension of cracking and fracture beha viour of materials and structures is steadily increasing. Further developments may be expected in the not too distant future, enabling useful prediction of fracture safety and fracture characteristics on the basis of advanced fracture mechanics procedures. The user of such advanced procedures m\lst have a general understanding of the elementary concepts, which are provided by this volume. Emphasis was placed on the practical application of fracture mechanics, but it was aimed to treat the subject in a way that may interest both metallurgists and engineers. For the latter, some general knowledge of fracture mechanisms and fracture criteria is indispensable for an apprecia tion of the limita tions of fracture mechanics. Therefore a general discussion is provided on fracture mechanisms, fracture criteria, and other metal lurgical aspects, without going into much detail. Numerous references are provided to enable a more detailed study of these subjects which are still in a stage of speculative treatment.
