Book excerpt: A fuzzy logic controller has been developed and simluated on an indirect vector control of an induction motor (IVCIM) drive system. The objective of the indirect vector control is to convert the three-phase induction motor into a linear device where the torque and the flux in the motor can be controlled independently. The induction motor is fed by a current-controlled PWM inverter. The proposed fuzzy speed controller block in a vector controlled drive system observes the pattern of the speed loop error signal and correspondingly updates its output, so that the actual speed matches the command speeds. The design of the fuzzy controller starts with identifying the inputs, performing the membership functions for the two inputs of the FLC and ends at manipulating the final command signal to the current regulator which triggers the inverter. The fuzzy logic toolbox has been used to build the fuzzy inference system (FIS) which is the dynamo of the fuzzy logic controller. The proposed FLC controller has been designed to meet the speed tracking requirements under a step change in speed and load changes. The proposed FLC drive dynamic performance has been investigated and tested under different operating conditions by simulation in the Simuling/Matlab software environment. In order to prove the superiority of the FLC, a conventional PI controller based IM drive system has also been simulated. The simulation results obtained have proved the very good performance and robustness of the proposed FLC. It is concluded that the proposed fuzzy logic controller has shown superior performances over the conventional PI controller.

Book excerpt: After a brief introduction to the main law of physics and fundamental concepts inherent in electromechanical conversion, Vector Control of Induction Machines introduces the standard mathematical models for induction machines – whichever rotor technology is used – as well as several squirrel-cage induction machine vector-control strategies. The use of causal ordering graphs allows systematization of the design stage, as well as standardization of the structure of control devices. Vector Control of Induction Machines suggests a unique approach aimed at reducing parameter sensitivity for vector controls based on a theoretical analysis of this sensitivity. This analysis naturally leads to the introduction of control strategies that are based on the combination of different controls with different robustness properties, through the use of fuzzy logic supervisors. Numerous applications and experiments confirm the validity of this simple solution, which is both reproducible and applicable to other complex systems. Vector Control of Induction Machines is written for researchers and postgraduate students in electrical engineering and motor drive design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variable speed is one of the important requirements in most of the electric drives. Earlier dc motors were the only drives that were used in industries requiring - eration over a wide range of speed with step less variation, or requiring fine ac- racy of speed control. Such drives are known as high performance drives. AC - tors because of being highly coupled non-linear devices can not provide fast dynamic response with normal controls. However, recently, because of ready availability of power electronic devices, and digital signal processors ac motors are beginning to be used for high performance drives. Field oriented control or vector control has made a fundamental change with regard to dynamic perfo- ance of ac machines. Vector control makes it possible to control induction or s- chronous motor in a manner similar to control scheme used for the separately - cited dc motor. Recent advances in artificial intelligence techniques have also contributed in the improvement in performance of electric drives. This book presents a comprehensive view of high performance ac drives. It may be considered as both a text book for graduate students and as an up-to-date monograph. It may also be used by R & D professionals involved in the impro- ment of performance of drives in the industries. The book will also be beneficial to the researchers pursuing work on sensorless and direct torque control of electric drives as up-to date references in these topics are provided.

Book excerpt: Conventional controllers like the proportional integral differential (PID) would have being very effective not just for speed control alone, if not for some complexities with individually controlling its respective controllers and summing up their individual contributions to effectively yield controlled signal output. Also, for its insensitivity to changes made to model parameters which may be as a result of misrepresentation of some control variables. As a result of this, developing an intelligent based fuzzy logic controller (FLC) became eminent, and on this basis, this book is written. By varying the motor speed with input reference speed, an error signal and a feedback loop is generated. The FLC then operates on the principles of mapping with corrective measure of the error signal generated and it is regulated by sets of IF-THEN rules integrating the Mamdani fuzzy inference approach. The rules projected and formed are used to overcome the drawbacks of conventional controllers. Since induction motors are widely used in many industries today, most especially squirrel caged, an intelligent approach to the control of these motors will save cost, increase reliability and efficiency

Book excerpt: Three-phase induction motors have been used in a wide range of industry applications; since they are robust, brushless and have simple design. Furthermore, the speed of induction motor can be easily controlled by variable frequency drives. The continuous development in power electronics semiconductors came out with modern electric drives. These drives use high speed power transistors, like IGBT and MOSFET, with various switching techniques. The speed control of induction motor is important to achieve maximum torque and efficiency. In the past decades, conventional control systems, such as proportional-integral derivative (PID) controller, were applied to electric drives to control the speed of induction motor. The PID controller is not a well established control method in motor drive because of the nonlinearity of induction motor. On the other hand, the use of Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) improves the performance of the speed control of induction motor. In this research, a microcontroller-based fuzzy logic controller was developed. The FLC replaces the conventional PI controller to improve the speed response of the drive in order to keep the speed of the induction motor constant when the load varies within the operating range. The research also included the design and implementation of a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) driven by Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) signal. The control system in this research was designed using Matlab/Simulink environment. The simulation included a comparison of speed response of FLC and PI controller. The input to FLC is the linguistic variable of speed error and change of speed error, while the output of FLC is the frequency fed to the inverter. The three-phase inverter was fabricated using MOSFET Hex-bridge connected to a low-pass LC-filter to smooth the inverter output voltage wave. In order to apply FLC and generate corresponding SVPWM signals a PIC16F877A microcontroller was used in the control system. The speed controller was tested using various values of input speed using simulation and experiments. The results showed the superiority of the proposed FLC over the conventional PI controller in the dynamics response of speed. The results also showed the ability of the proposed to generate a three-phase sine wave with desired frequency to control the speed of the induction motor with THD less than 5%.

Book excerpt: This chapter develops a sliding mode and fuzzy logic-based speed controller, which is named adaptive fuzzy sliding-mode controller (AFSMC) for an indirect field-oriented control (IFOC) of an induction motor (IM) drive. Essentially, the boundary layer approach is the most popular method to reduce the chattering phenomena, which leads to trade-off between control performances, and chattering elimination for uncertain nonlinear systems. For the proposed AFSMC, a fuzzy system is assigned as the reaching control part of the fuzzy sliding-mode controller so that it improves the control performances and eliminates the chattering completely despite large and small uncertainties in the system. A nonlinear adaptive law is also implemented to adjust the control gain with uncertainties of the system. The adaptive law is developed in the sense of Lyapunov stability theorem to minimize the control effort. The applied adaptive fuzzy controller acts like a saturation function in the thin boundary layer near the sliding surface to guarantee the stability of the system. The proposed AFSMC-based IM drive is implemented in real-time using digital signal processor (DSP) board TI TMS320F28335. The experimental and simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed AFSMC-based IM drive at different operating conditions such as load disturbance, parameter variations, et cetera.

Book excerpt: Alternating current (AC) induction and synchronous machines are frequently used in variable speed drives with applications ranging from computer peripherals, robotics, and machine tools to railway traction, ship propulsion, and rolling mills. The notable impact of vector control of AC drives on most traditional and new technologies, the multitude of practical configurations proposed, and the absence of books treating this subject as a whole with a unified approach were the driving forces behind the creation of this book. Vector Control of AC Drives examines the remarkable progress achieved worldwide in vector control from its introduction in 1969 to the current technology. The book unifies the treatment of vector control of induction and synchronous motor drives using the concepts of general flux orientation and the feed-forward (indirect) and feedback (direct) voltage and current vector control. The concept of torque vector control is also introduced and applied to all AC motors. AC models for drive applications developed in complex variables (space phasors), both for induction and synchronous motors, are used throughout the book. Numerous practical implementations of vector control are described in considerable detail, followed by representative digital simulations and test results taken from the recent literature. Vector Control of AC Drives will be a welcome addition to the reference collections of electrical and mechanical engineers involved with machine and system design.

Book excerpt: This book contains publications on various fuzzy sliding mode speed controllers (FSMCs) based on the boundary layer approaches in the area of an indirect field-oriented control (IFOC) for Induction Motor (IM) drive, which include development and implementation FSMCs and related fields. The publications within Applications of Various Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controllers in Induction Motor Drives cover significant and recent developments of both foundational and applicable character in the field. With the exception of some basic notions in sliding mode control (SMC), field-oriented control (FOC), and fuzzy theory, the book is completely self-contained. Important concepts in FSMCs and its use in high performance IM are carefully motivated and introduced. Specifically, the authors have excluded any technical material that does not contribute directly to the understanding of SMC, FOC or fuzzy theory. Many other excellent textbooks are available today that discuss fuzzy, FOC and SMC in much more technical detail than that which is provided here.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the development and implementation of an integral field oriented intelligent control for an induction motor (IM) drive using Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC), and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN), employing a finite element controller and making use of a Proportional Integral (PI) adaptive controller as well. An analytical model of an induction motor drive has been developed. In order to prove the superiority of the proposed controller, the performance of this controller is compared with conventional PI-based IM drives. The performance of the proposed IM drive is investigated extensively at different operating conditions in simulation. The proposed adaptive PI-based speed controller's performance is found to be robust and it is a potential candidate for high performance industrial drive applications. The novel work focuses on using a Finite Element Controller map (FECM) to manipulate adaptive controllers for motor control drives. A digital signal processing (DSP) board DS1104 and laboratory induction motor were used to implement the complete vector control scheme. The test results have been compared with simulated results at different dynamic operating conditions. The effectiveness of this control scheme has been evaluated, and it has been found to be more efficient than the conventional PI controller.
