Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume from Japan’s Research Subcommittee on Methodology for Dealing with Geomaterials in Hydraulic Model Experiments presents readers with a state-of-the-art overview of experimental and computational methods used to address similarity scaling incompatibilities present in fluid–sediment flows. Readers will gain an understanding of complex phenomena in the boundary fields of hydraulics and geotechnical engineering. Chapter contributors focus on the phenomena that are affected by the interactions between fluid wave and ground in a complex field, which for many years have been challenging to process and model. In addition to describing the implementation of model tests and the concept of the law of similarity, this book contrasts these phenomena with the laws of similarity, describes models and numeral analysis methods, and explains important considerations using experimental case studies. Each chapter is written by leading researchers in Japan who are members of the Research Subcommittee on Methodology for Dealing with Geomaterials in Hydraulic Model Experiments. The chapters are closely linked but are written so that each can be read individually. Readers will be able to apply this knowledge to their work and to create models that more accurately simulate the interactions between wave and ground, allowing them to better understand these phenomena and devise more appropriate strategies for defense and so on when necessary. This collection provides information that can be used by young researchers and post-graduate students in the boundary fields of hydraulics and geotechnical engineering who aim at becoming civil engineers, and it will be of particular value to practicing engineers of all experience levels who must regularly analyze complex interactions between fluids and ground.

Download or read book Similitude and Approximation Theory written by S.J. Kline and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a number of reasons for producing this edition of Simili tude and Approximation Theory. The methodologies developed remain important in many areas of technical work. No other equivalent work has appeared in the two decades since the publication of the first edition. The materials still provide an important increase in understanding for first-year graduate students in engineering and for workers in research and development at an equivalent level. In addition, consulting experiences in a number of industries indi cate that many technical workers in research and development lack knowledge of the methodologies given in this work. This lack makes the work of planning and controlling computations and experiments less efficient in many cases. It also implies that the coordinated grasp of the phenomena (which is so critical to effective research and develop ment work) will be less than it might be. The materials covered in this work focus on the relationship between mathematical models and the physical reality such models are intended v vi Preface to the Springer Edition to portray. Understanding these relationships remains a key factor in simplifying and generalizing correlations, predictions, test programs, and computations. Moreover, as many teachers of engineering know, this kind of understanding is typically harder for students to develop than an understanding of either the mathematics or the physics alone.

Book Synopsis Physical Models and Laboratory Techniques in Coastal Engineering by : Steven A. Hughes
Download or read book Physical Models and Laboratory Techniques in Coastal Engineering written by Steven A. Hughes and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory physical models are a valuable tool for coastal engineers. Physical models help us to understand the complex hydrodynamic processes occurring in the nearshore zone and they provide reliable and economic engineering design solutions. This book is about the art and science of physical modeling as applied in coastal engineering. The aim of the book is to consolidate and synthesize into a single text much of the knowledge about physical modeling that has been developed worldwide. This book was written to serve as a graduate-level text for a course in physical modeling or as a reference text for engineers and researchers engaged in physical modeling and laboratory experimentation. The first three chapters serve as an introduction to similitude and physical models, covering topics such as advantages and disadvantages of physical models, systems of units, dimensional analysis, types of similitude and various hydraulic similitude criteria applicable to coastal engineering models.Practical application of similitude principles to coastal engineering studies is covered in Chapter 4 (Hydrodynamic Models), Chapter 5 (Coastal Structure Models) and Chapter 6 (Sediment Transport Models). These chapters develop the appropriate similitude criteria, discuss inherent laboratory and scale effects and overview the technical literature pertaining to these types of models. The final two chapters focus on the related subjects of laboratory wave generation (Chapter 7) and measurement and analysis techniques (Chapter 8).

Book Synopsis A Similitude Analysis in Case of Water Turbines by : Pavel Dokoupil
Download or read book A Similitude Analysis in Case of Water Turbines written by Pavel Dokoupil and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of increasing expansion of numerical modeling, the model research of hydraulic machines is being used for experimental verification of the hydraulic machine on the model. Tests of physical models are the essential part of research and development of large and medium-sized hydraulic turbines. Even the best math model cannot replace the actual behavior of the machine under similar conditions, which will affect the real plant. The book deals with issue of the model tests on the model Francis turbine. In the first part, theory of model tests and the theory of similarity are mentioned. The second part focuses on model research and measurement in practice. There are examples of measurement results, such as tables, graphs, characteristics; it further describes variables, constants, and formulas necessary for the correct measurement and evaluation of data, basic principles and procedures for the measurement. From the initial stages (production, appropriate choice of sensors) to the final results of measurements with calculation of uncertainties on the performed measurement. The book is supplemented with photos. The book serves students and those who are interested in this issue.
