Book excerpt: Stewartson's transformation is applied to the laminar compressible boundary-layer equations and the requirement of similarity is introduced, resulting in a set of ordinary nonlinear differential equations previously quoted by Stewartson, but unsolved. The requirements of the system are Prandtl number of 1.0, linear viscosity-temperature relation across the boundary layer, an isothermal surface, and the particular distributions of free-stream velocity consistent with similar solutions. This system admits axial pressure gradients of arbitrary magnitude, heat flux normal to the surface, and arbitrary Mach numbers. The system of differential equations is transformed to integral system, with the velocity ratio as the independent variable. For this system, solutions are found by digital computation for pressure gradients varying from that causing separation to the infinitely favorable gradient and for wall temperatures from absolute zero to twice the free-stream stagnation temperature. Some solutions for separated flows are also presented.

Book excerpt: Heat-transfer and skin-friction parameters obtained from exact solutions to the laminar compressible boundary-layer equations for infinite cylinders in yaw are presented. The effects of transpiration cooling, Prandtl number, pressure gradient, wall temperature, and viscosity relation were investigated. It is shown that as the Mach number is increased for a given large yaw angle the effects of pressure gradient become larger and the quantity of coolant required to maintain a given wall temperature is also increased. The use of a linear viscosity-temperature relation gives approximately the same results as the Sutherland viscosity-temperature relation except for very high aerodynamic heating rates.

Book excerpt: Representative tensile and compressive stress-strain curves are give for each material at the test temperatures. The variations of the tensile and compressive properties with temperature is shown for specimens tested parallel and transverse to the rolling direction of the materials. Secant and tangent moduli, obtained from the compressive data, are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steady, viscous, two-dimensional and axially symmetric stagnation-point flows of a gas are considered for the case when the Reynolds number is too low for the applicability of the classical boundary-layer theory. It is assumed that the low-density gas is still a continuous fluid, permitting the use of the Navier-Stokes and as associated equations as the basis of the problem. The effects of low Reynolds number are determined by applying an expansion procedure to the fluid dynamical equations.

Book excerpt: Certain numerical solutions to the laminar boundary-layer similarity equations are presented which illustrate the effects of Prandtl number, viscosity-temperature variation, mass transfer, wall temperature, pressure gradient, and hypersonic parameter sigma on the structure of the boundary layer and the derivatives of velocity (shear force) and total enthalpy at the wall. The results show that the common boundary-layer simplifications (such as Prandtl number = 1, viscosity proportional to temperature, zero pressure gradient) often lead to numerical errors of 20 to 50 per cent in the predicted heat transfer, skin friction, and displacement thickness. The shear and enthalpy gradient are shown to depend on the form of the viscosity-temperature relation, the Prandtl number, and the hypersonic parameter sigma. Results for high surface mass-injection r rates at the stagnation point indicate that the shear at the wall does not vanish as in the case of a flat plate. (Author).
