Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here we have over one hundred and fifty translations of haiku verses, largely composed by the five most famous of haiku poets. All use insects as seasonal topics to set the scene in spring, summer or autumn. But the definition of insects in complicated because in the Sino-Japanese tradition the insect genus includes frogs as well as bees, spiders as well as silverfish, angleworms as well as gnats, and snakes as well as ants. This expanded category is here called creeping things, reflecting a similar division of fauna in the Bible. It seems appropriate that the Japanese would use what is surely the world's shortest poetic form consisting of a mere seventeen syllables arranged in lines of 5,7,5 to describe the miniscule world of creeping things. In so doing, they expressed kernels of poetic inspiration in a few simple words, eschewing the doggerel that so often has followed a brilliant line and leaving to the imagination place and time, for the beauty of the haiku often lies in what is only hunted and left unsaid.

This enchanting book is a highly entertaining exploration of the myriad ways insects have enriched our lives–culturally, economically, and aesthetically. Entomologist and writer Gilbert Waldbauer describes in loving, colorful detail how many of the valuable products insects have given us are made, how they were discovered, and how they have been used through time and across cultures. Along the way, he takes us on a captivating ramble through many far-flung corners of history, mythology, poetry, literature, medicine, ecology, forensics, and more. Enlivened with personal anecdotes from Waldbauer's distinguished career as an entomologist, the book also describes surprising everyday encounters we all experience that were made possible by insects. From butterfly gardens and fly-fishing to insects as jewelry and sex pheromones, this is an eye-opening ode to the wonder of insects that illuminates our extraordinary and essential relationship with the natural world.

The Ben cao gang mu is a sixteenth-century Chinese encyclopedia of medical matter and natural history by Li Shizhen (1518–1593). The culmination of a sixteen-hundred-year history of Chinese medical and pharmaceutical literature, it is considered the most important and comprehensive book ever written in the history of Chinese medicine and remains an invaluable resource for researchers and practitioners. This nine-volume series reveals an almost two-millennia-long panorama of wide-ranging observations and sophisticated interpretations, ingenious manipulations, and practical applications of natural substances for the benefit of human health. Paul Unschuld's annotated translation of the Ben cao gang mu, presented here with the original Chinese text, opens a rare window into viewing the people and culture of China's past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The future can't be predicted but it can be envisioned and brought lovingly into being.' Donella Meadows Like most of us, Damon Gameau has spent most of his adult years overwhelmed into inaction by the problem of climate change and its devastating effects on the planet. But when Damon became a father, he knew he couldn't continue to look away. So he decided to do what he does best, and tell a story. And the story became an imagining of what the world could look like in 2040, if we all decided to start doing things differently, right now. The result is the era-defining documentary 2040 - a meticulously researched plea for the adoption of community-building, energy-generating, connection-forging, forest-renewing, ocean-replenishing measures that science tells us will reset our planet's health, drive our economies and improve lives across the globe. 2040: A Handbook for the Regeneration shows us how we can stitch this magnificent vision into everyday life by engaging in activities such as cooking, shopping, gardening, sharing, working and teaching our kids. It shows us that climate change is a practical problem that can be tackled by each of us, one small step at a time, and that we can make a genuine difference - if we know what to do. Brimming with practical wisdom and even 50 delicious recipes, 2040: A Handbook for the Regeneration empowers you to become the change you want to see in the world. This is a specially formatted fixed-layout ebook that retains the look and feel of the print book. PRAISE FOR THE 2040 DOCUMENTARY '2040 is the Australian documentary everyone's going to be talking about' Mamamia 'even better than That Sugar Film!' Tom Tilley of Triple J's Hack 'In 2040, Gameau defaults to the position of inspiring people rather than alarming or overwhelming them. You leave the film wanting more, not less, of these sorts of productions.' Guardian 'a real glimpse of a greener future' Sydney Morning Herald

Book excerpt: Gillott’s thorough yet clear writing style continues to keep Entomology near the top of the class as a text for senior undergraduates, and for graduate students and professionals seeking an introduction to specific entomological topics. The author’s long-held belief that an introductory entomology course should present a balanced treatment of the subject is reflected in the continued arrangement of the book in four sections: Evolution and Diversity, Anatomy and Physiology, Reproduction and Development, and Ecology. For the third edition, all chapters have been updated. This includes not only the addition of new information and concepts but also the reduction or exclusion of material no longer considered "mainstream", so as to keep the book at a reasonable size. Based on exciting discoveries made during the previous decade, the topics of insect evolutionary relationships, semiochemicals, gas exchange, immune responses (including those of parasites and parasitoids), flight, and the management of pests have received particular attention in the preparation of the third edition. Overall, more than 30 new or significantly revised figures have been incorporated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BIOMIMICRY MATERIALS AND APPLICATIONS Since the concept of biomimetics was first developed in 1950, the practical applications of biomimetic materials have created a revolution from biotechnology to medicine and most industrial domains, and are the future of commercial work in nearly all fields. Biomimetic materials are basically synthetic materials or man-made materials which can mimic or copy the properties of natural materials. Scientists have created a revolution by mimicking natural polymers through semi-synthetic or fully synthetic methods. There are different methods to mimic a material, such as copying form and shape, copying the process, and finally mimicking at an ecosystem level. This book comprises a detailed description of the materials used to synthesize and form biomimetic materials. It describes the materials in a way that will be far more convenient and easier to understand. The editors have compiled the book so that it can be used in all areas of research, and it shows the properties, preparations, and applications of biomimetic materials currently being used. Readers of this volume will find that: It introduces the synthesis and formation of biomimetic materials; Provides a thorough overview of many industrial applications, such as textiles, management of plant disease detection, and various applications of electroactive polymers; Presents ideas on sustainability and how biomimicry fits within that arena; Deliberates the importance of biomimicry in novel materials. Audience This is a useful guide for engineers, researchers, and students who work on the synthesis, properties, and applications of existing biomimetic materials in academia and industrial settings.
