There is a need for all educational sectors in society to coordinate unique educational engagements regarding children with accumulated and escalating behavioral problems that daily take their tribute and leave far-reaching consequences on the degradation of each individual and of the community. The Handbook of Research on Pedagogies and Early Intervention Strategies for Combatting Socio-Pathological Behaviors serves as a guide to the social pedagogy discipline. The text raises awareness among professionals and the public about the need and prevention of socio-pathological manifestations and explains the types, expansion, causes, and consequences of their occurrence and the need for an organized social action to reduce and overcome them. Covering topics such as social pedagogy, sociopathic manifestations, and child-to-child care, this book is an essential guide for students preparing to be preschool educators, teachers, professors, social educators, psychologists, social workers, defectologists, as well as parents, current university faculty, and practitioners.

Book excerpt: Randomized clinical trials are the primary tool for evaluating new medical interventions. Randomization provides for a fair comparison between treatment and control groups, balancing out, on average, distributions of known and unknown factors among the participants. Unfortunately, these studies often lack a substantial percentage of data. This missing data reduces the benefit provided by the randomization and introduces potential biases in the comparison of the treatment groups. Missing data can arise for a variety of reasons, including the inability or unwillingness of participants to meet appointments for evaluation. And in some studies, some or all of data collection ceases when participants discontinue study treatment. Existing guidelines for the design and conduct of clinical trials, and the analysis of the resulting data, provide only limited advice on how to handle missing data. Thus, approaches to the analysis of data with an appreciable amount of missing values tend to be ad hoc and variable. The Prevention and Treatment of Missing Data in Clinical Trials concludes that a more principled approach to design and analysis in the presence of missing data is both needed and possible. Such an approach needs to focus on two critical elements: (1) careful design and conduct to limit the amount and impact of missing data and (2) analysis that makes full use of information on all randomized participants and is based on careful attention to the assumptions about the nature of the missing data underlying estimates of treatment effects. In addition to the highest priority recommendations, the book offers more detailed recommendations on the conduct of clinical trials and techniques for analysis of trial data.

Book excerpt: This book begins by introducing the effective field approach, the simplest approach to phase transitions. It provides an intuitive approximation to the physics of such diverse phenomena as liquid-vapor transitions, ferromagnetism, superconductivity, order-disorder in alloys, ferroelectricity, superfluidity and ferroelasticity. The connection between the effective field approach and Landau's theory is stressed. The main coverage is devoted to specific applications of the effective field concept to ferroelectric systems, both hydrogen bonded ferroelectrics, like those in the TGS family, and oxide ferroelectrics, like pure and mixed perovskites.

Book excerpt: How to recognize common obstacles to anxiety treatment and overcome complicating factors. Most people with mental health challenges of any kind are burdened by anxiety. In many cases, their anxiety symptoms are what prompt them to seek therapy in the first place. Unfortunately, these people also often have difficulty using standard anxiety treatment protocols, and problems heap upon themselves. When anxiety is tough to treat, dual conditions may be blocking treatment. This clinical casebook identifies symptoms that may indicate these obstacles, helping mental health professionals recognize conditions that coexist with anxiety—such as autism spectrum disorder, addiction, OCD, and depression. Margaret Wehrenberg breaks down this information into three parts: generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder. Each section describes a typical symptom pattern for each, how other disorders may complicate treatment, and examples of successful interventions. The book is organized by profiles of common conditions matched with an anxiety type, including "The Illogical Worrier" (generalized anxiety and OCD) and "The Meltdown Panicker" (panic disorder and autism spectrum disorder). Drawing from a career's worth of experience as a therapist supported by scholarly research, Tough-to-Treat Anxiety provides treatment methods for anxiety that resists remission. By highlighting commonly experience difficulties, this book jump starts the therapeutic journey to relief.

Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. In the past two decades, the "movement" of deconstruction has bad tremendous impact on a number of academic, disciplines in the United States. However, its force has been rather limited in the field of philosophy, despite the fact that in Europe the practice of deconstruction emerged in the work of philosophers. Although the reasons for this can be debated, two of the more obvious explanations are the mainstream Anglo-American philosophers rarely studied the German and French philosophical traditions in great detail, and deconstruction's focus on discourse and interpretation has made it more attractive to the literary and humanistic disciplines. With this context, Strategies of Deconstruction focuses on the early work of Jacques Derrida, the French philosopher who introduced deconstruction in Speech and Phenomena, his study of Edmund Husserl, and Of Grammatology, and whose philosophical reputation stems in no small part from his work on Husserl. In examining the philosophical import of Derrida's theories of reading, text, and language, specifically as they related to Speech and Phenomena,J. Claude Evans makes careful reference to Husserl's own texts. His analysis indicates that there are many systematic irregularities in Derrida's study and that without those irregularities Derrida's conclusions cannot be substantiated.
