Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Data acquisition' is concerned with taking one or more analogue signals and converting them to digital form with sufficient accu racy and speed to be ready for processing by a computer. The increasing use of computers makes this an expanding field, and it is important that the conversion process is done correctly because information lost at this stage can never be regained, no matter how good the computation. The old saying - garbage in, garbage out - is very relevant to data acquisition, and so every part of the book contains a discussion of errors: where do they come from, how large are they, and what can be done to reduce them? The book aims to treat the data acquisition process in depth with less detailed chapters on the fundamental principles of measure ment, sensors and signal conditioning. There is also a chapter on software packages, which are becoming increasingly popular. This is such a rapidly changing topic that any review of available pro grams is bound to be out of date before the book reaches the read ers. For this reason, I have described the data handling which is available in various types of program and left it to the reader to select from whatever is on the market at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This report documents the design of an analog signal conditioning subsystem for a general purpose data acquisition device. The method of differential inputs is used to better control the common noise in input signals. The application flexibility of the device is maximized by combining amplifiers with selectable and wide range of gains, and variable filter cutoff frequency. Finally, test procedures and results are discussed and analysis the performance by comparing to the ideal design. The analog signal conditioning is part of a larger collaborative effort involving several students during the 2004-2005 academic years. Therefore, the data acquisition goals and system requirements are reviewed to provide context for this work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standalone Data Acquisition System (SDAS) is a portable digital data recording system for geophysical field data collection. This report describes the SDAS, giving special emphasis to the SDAS signal conditioning subsystem, which uses custom-designed active filter modules for signal filtering and amplifications. Detailed descriptions of the active filters, including design equations and software, are provided. This subsystem, together with software for its configuration and performance verification, provides an improved capability for analog signal conditioning. This report also provides a functional description of the SDAS. It documents the system hardware and such software as is needed for system configuration and checkout. Each subsystem in the SDAS is described via functional descriptions and such diagrams and schematics as are necessary to understand subsystem functioning. Detailed schematics, parts lists, software listings, and subsystem specifications are covered in appendices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamentals of data acquisition systems, how they enable users to sample signals that measure real physical conditions and convert the resulting samples into digital, numeric values that can be analyzed by a computer. The author takes a problem-solving approach to data acquisition, providing the tools engineers need to use the concepts introduced. Coverage includes sensors that convert physical parameters to electrical signals, signal conditioning circuitry to convert sensor signals into a form that can be converted to digital values and analog-to-digital converters, which convert conditioned sensor signals to digital values. Readers will benefit from the hands-on approach, culminating with data acquisition projects, including hardware and software needed to build data acquisition systems.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive and up-to-date reference on mechatronics, Robert Bishop's The Mechatronics Handbook was quickly embraced as the gold standard in the field. With updated coverage on all aspects of mechatronics, The Mechatronics Handbook, Second Edition is now available as a two-volume set. Each installment offers focused coverage of a particular area of mechatronics, supplying a convenient and flexible source of specific information. This seminal work is still the most exhaustive, state-of-the-art treatment of the field available. Focusing on the most rapidly changing areas of mechatronics, this book discusses signals and systems control, computers, logic systems, software, and data acquisition. It begins with coverage of the role of control and the role modeling in mechatronic design, setting the stage for the more fundamental discussions on signals and systems. The volume reflects the profound impact the development of not just the computer, but the microcomputer, embedded computers, and associated information technologies and software advances. The final sections explore issues surrounding computer software and data acquisition. Covers modern aspects of control design using optimization techniques from H2 theory Discusses the roles of adaptive and nonlinear control and neural networks and fuzzy systems Includes discussions of design optimization for mechatronic systems and real-time monitoring and control Focuses on computer hardware and associated issues of logic, communication, networking, architecture, fault analysis, embedded computers, and programmable logic controllers
