Book excerpt: Written to address the growing demand for Lean Six Sigma expertise, this text provides a step-by-step Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) process, that describes how to use the tools appropriate for each phase and provide data where tools can be practiced by students. Applying Lean Six Sigma in Health Care trains students on performance improvement techniques and current terminology so that they will be prepared to conduct Lean Six Sigma projects in large health care systems and support the physicians and nurses running these projects. With a focus on application, students learn and utilize the DMAIC process, by applying it to an improvement project that is carried through the text.

Book excerpt: Sigma-free, moderately, and very sigma prone cast IN-100 were exposed at 1550' F (843' C) for 250 and 2500 hours to permit sigma to form. As sigma increased, rupture life, tensile strength and ductility decreased. Yield strength at room temperature increased after exposure for 250 hours. Exposure times of 2500 hours caused the yield to approach or fall below the as cast values. Sigma isothermal transformation curves were prepared for wrought and cast IN-100 having essentially the same compositions. Wrought material exposed in a stress gradient at 1550' F (843' C) was examined for a stress effect on sigma formation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the new boson is indeed the Higgs particle, its discovery represents an important milestone in the history of particle physics. However, despite the pressure to award Nobel Prizes to physicists associated with the Higgs boson, John Moffat argues that there still remain important data analyses to be performed before uncorking the champagne. John Moffat is Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Toronto and a senior researcher at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Well-known for his outside-the-box research on topics such as dark matter, dark energy, and the varying speed of light cosmology (VSL), his new book takes a critical look at the hype surrounding the Higgs boson. In the process, he presents a cogent and often entertaining history of particle physics and an exploration of alternative theories of particle physics that do not feature the Higgs boson, including his own. He gives a detailed and personal description of how theoretical physicists come up with new theories, and emphasizes how carefully experimental physicists must interpret the complex data now coming out of accelerators like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The book does not shy away from controversial topics such as the sociology of particle physics. There is immense pressure on projects like the $9 billion LHC to come up with positive results in order to secure funding for the future. Yet to date, the Higgs boson may be the only positive result to emerge from the LHC experiments. The searches for dark matter particles, mini-black holes, extra dimensions, and supersymmetric particles have all come up empty-handed, with serious consequences for theoretical physics, including string theory and gravity theory. John Moffat is also the author of Reinventing Gravity (2008) and Einstein Wrote Back (2010).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on rapid technological developments in wind power, governments and energy corporations are aggressively investing in this natural resource. Illustrating some of the crucial new breakthroughs in structural design and application of wind energy generation machinery, Hybrid Anisotropic Materials for Wind Power Turbine Blades explores new automated, repeatable production techniques that expand the use of robotics and process controls. These practices are intended to ensure cheaper fabrication of less-defective anisotropic material composites used to manufacture power turbine blades. This book covers new methods of casting or pultrusion that reduce thickness in the glass- and graphite-fiber laminate prepregs used in load-bearing skin blades and web shear spars. This optimized process creates thinner, more cost-effective prepegs that still maintain strength and reliability. The book also addresses a wide range of vital technical topics, including: Selection of carbon/fiberglass materials Estimation of combination percentages Minimization and optimal placement of shear webs (spars) Advantages of resin, such as lower viscosity and curing time Strength and manufacturing criteria for selecting anisotropic materials and turbine blade materials Analysis of dynamic fatigue life and vibration factors in blade design NDE methods to predict and control deflections, stiffness, and strength Written by a prolific composite materials expert with more than 40 years of research experience, this reference is invaluable for a new generation of composite designers, graduate students, and industry professionals involved in wind power system design. Assessing significant required changes in transmission, manufacturing, and markets, this resource outlines innovative methods to help the U.S. Department of Energy meet its goal of having wind energy account for 20 percent of total generated energy by 2030.
