Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, working-class people across northern India found themselves negotiating rapid industrial change, emerging technologies, and class hierarchies. In response to these changes, Indian Muslim artisans began publicly asserting the deep relation between their religion and their labor, using the increasingly accessible popular press to redefine Islamic traditions “from below.” Centering the stories and experiences of metalsmiths, stonemasons, tailors, press workers, and carpenters, Pious Labor examines colonial-era social and technological changes through the perspectives of the workers themselves. As Amanda Lanzillo shows, the colonial marginalization of these artisans is intimately linked with the continued exclusion of laboring voices today. By drawing on previously unstudied Urdu-language technical manuals and community histories, Lanzillo highlights not only the materiality of artisanal production but also the cultural agency of artisanal producers, filling in a major gap in South Asian history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2016 and after 19 years in the industry, film and TV editor Matthew Robinson decided to make a change. He quit his lucrative work, with a huge paycut and joined a UK charity based in a small office above West London Islamic Cultural Centre. It changed his life forever. This book is about his experiences in the world of humanitarian work, including filming a cross-Europe aid convoy to Greece; refuge camps in Lebanon and Turkey' open hear surgeries on babies in Tanzania; water wells in Ethiopia and Bangladesh; food and water distributions in the desert in Somalia and Yemen; marathons in Morocco and Palestine; and a rickshaw challenge in Pakistan. It is an honest insight into the world of the charity sector, and a man who has struggled with his own personal issues in an ongoing fight to work in, and understand a constantly changing world, where the needs and rights of people significantly vary depending on their place of birth.

Book excerpt: The city of Lahore, one of the seats of the Mughal Empire, is regarded as the cultural centre of Pakistan and is famous for its many old monuments. However, the informed visitor or student has long felt the absence of a reliable volume on its architecture. Dr Rahmani's book resolves that issue. Diligently researched, it deals with the history and architecture of old monuments in Lahore, especially of the Mughal period., The topic is rich in terms of the variety of building types and the book covers a period of several centuries. The study has been organized chronologically, highlighting locations, significance, history, architecture, and the current condition of each monument. It also discusses the architectural and aesthetic influences, both foreign and local, and contains a comprehensive statement of achievements of particular epochs. For determining the architectural merit of specific monuments, a comparative approach has been adopted. At the end of the book, there is a chapter pertaining to analytical study of monuments in a historical perspective. The old theories regarding origin and nomenclature have been updated in the light of fresh research. The study, based on 33 years of personal observation by the author, also utilizes both published and unpublished sources, and official records.

Book excerpt: The Indian subcontinent was the scene of dramatic upheavals a few thousand years ago. The Northwest region entered an arid phase, and erosion coupled with tectonic events played havoc with river courses. One of them disappeared. Celebrated as -Sarasvati' in the Rig Veda and the Mahabharata, this river was rediscovered in the early nineteenth century through topographic explorations by British officials. Recently, geological and climatological studies have probed its evolution and disappearance, while satellite imagery has traced the river's buried courses and isotope analyses have dated ancient waters still stored under the Thar Desert. In the same Northwest, the subcontinent's first urban society"the Indus civilization"flourished and declined. But it was not watered by the Indus alone: since Aurel Stein's expedition in the 1940s, hundreds of Harappan sites have been identified in the now dry Sarasvati's basin. The rich Harappan legacy in technologies, arts and culture sowed the seeds of Indian civilization as we know it now. Drawing from recent research in a wide range of disciplines, this book discusses differing viewpoints and proposes a harmonious synthesis"a fascinating tale of exploration that brings to life the vital role the -lost river of the Indian desert' played before its waters gurgled to a stop.
