Download or read book This Seat of Mars written by Charles Carlton and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-22 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare was not exaggerating when he defined being a soldier as one of the seven ages of man. Over the early modern period, many millions of young men from the four corners of the present United Kingdom went to war, often--and most bloodily--against each other. The almost continuous fighting on land and sea for the two and one-half centuries between Bosworth and Culloden decimated lives, but created the British state and forged the nation as the world's predominant power. In this innovative and moving book, Charles Carlton explores the glorious and terrible impact of war at the national and individual levels. Chapters alternate, providing a robust military and political narrative interlaced with accounts illuminating the personal experience of war, from recruitment to the end of battle in discharge or death. Carlton expertly charts the remarkable military developments over the period, as well as war's enduring corollaries--camaraderie, courage, fear, and grief--to give a powerful account of the profound effect of war on the British Isles and its peoples.
Book Synopsis Battlefields in Britain by : C. V. Wedgwood
Download or read book Battlefields in Britain written by C. V. Wedgwood and published by Uniform Press. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by the noted historian C. V. Wedgwood, Battlefields in Britain dives deep into the major battles within the British Isles from the Norman Conquest of the eleventh century up to the 1940s. Spanning centuries of tumultuous British history, the accounts of battles are accompanied by a map of each battle area, offering a full scope of the combat. Wedgwood provides wonderfully detailed accounts of conflicts such as the fierce Battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066, between the Norman-French and English armies who fought for the throne, and the fifteenth-century battle of Tewkesbury, which effectively wiped out the royal Lancaster family. In her edge-of-your-seat description of the Battle of Culloden, Wedgwood speaks of the palpable impending doom of the invasion, while in the Battle of Britain, fought mostly by plane in British skies, she describes the airmen who "left the quivering air signed with their honor." Wedgwood was famous for visiting the grounds of the original battle sites--often during the season or month that the battles took place--to pace out the paths of combat, making sure she had a clear vision of the battle scene, and her research is evident in her riveting accounts. Battlefields in Britain includes battles of the Welsh Wars, Falkirk, Bannockburn, Barnet, Bosworth, Flodden, Edgehill, Marston Moor, Inverlochy, Naseby, Dunbar, Killiecrankie, and Culloden, among many others, making it an indispensable resource for both historians and war buffs.

Book Synopsis Thomas Rainborowe (c. 1610-1648) by : Whitney Richard David Jones
Download or read book Thomas Rainborowe (c. 1610-1648) written by Whitney Richard David Jones and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biography of Thomas Rainborowe - now being recognised as one of the most important players in the English Civil War. This book offers an account of the life and career of Thomas Rainborowe, a significant figure in the English Civil War in both military and political terms. His involvement in the sea-borne Irish Expedition of 1642 was followed byservice as an infantry leader within the Eastern Association and the New Model Army, where he achieved particular distinction as a siege commander. In the context of the New Model's burgeoning political role, Rainborowe emerged at the Putney Debates [a landmark in the history of the political philosophy] as perhaps the most cogent spokesman for the radical/Leveller cause; but his association with the abortive Leveller-inspired mutiny at Ware, and his hostility toward continued negotiation with Charles I, led to his fall from grace with Cromwell and the `grandees'. Despite this, he re-emerged as a pre-eminent siege-commander at Colchester; but, en route to impose a more rigorous siege of Pontefract Castle, he was assassinated at Doncaster, in highly suspicious circumstances, in November 1648. Written in a lively and accessible style, this is the first full-length study of a man whose importance has been hitherto neglected.
