Book excerpt: In the England of 1218, King John is dead and his young son is on the throne, guided by the aging William, Marshall of England. All of the vast domains of Johns father on the Continent have been lost and the rebellious barons are held to a fragile truce. It is very much a mans world. When Elise of Debouchet defi es the step-uncle who has laid claim to her estates and refuses to marry any of the men he chooses, he gives her an ultimatum. You do not need your eyes to speak the vows or get an heir. You will do as I say or I will have your eyes put out. Elise says she would rather marry any man than the one before her. Her uncle counters with, The next man through the gate will be your husband, be he prince or serf. Elise agrees because she doesnt want to be blinded. Her uncle has taken her mother and younger sister hostage and she needs time to fi nd some clue as to where he holds them. When Louis of Kirkfi eld, a Romani merchant, walks over the bridge and through the gate of the closest castle, his only thought is to buy a horse to replace his lame packhorse. He is overwhelmed by four brawny men and badly beaten, then forced to say vows before a priest. He and his new bride are thrown into a tower room. The door is barred against escape. Louis does escape and comes back with an army. But Elises mother and sister cannot be located and they follow the trail to France and her grandmother. The more they know, the more they fi nd out, the bigger the scheme becomes and they are now searching for a double agent, a money lender, a lawyer and an assassin. The wealthy young bride and her gypsy must follow the trails and learn to work together to make their marriage work and therein lies the tale.

It contains over 300 items of prose and verse gleaned from classical literature, folklore, history and true Gypsy life. It has long been considered unique in its field and is very hard to find in its first edition. We have now re-published this scarce book incorporating the original text and illustrations. The book's 380 pages are divided into 12 sections designed to bring to light the chief facets of Gypsy life. They have been chosen for their historical and anthropological interest and are supported with illustrations of the real Gypsy way of life, and yet the same wind blows over all on this Gypsy heath. Contents include: The Dark Race. - The Roaming Life. - Field and Sky. - Gypsies and Gentiles. - The Romany Chye. - Gypsy Children. - Sturt and Strife. - Black Arts. - A Gypsy Bestiary. - Egipte Speche. - Scholar Gypsies. - Envoy. Also included is a glossary of Romani words. This important book is thoroughly recommended for inclusion on the bookshelf of all with an interest in Gypsy ways.

Book Synopsis Lacybourne Manor by : Kristen Ashley
Download or read book Lacybourne Manor written by Kristen Ashley and published by Kristen Ashley. This book was released on 2011-08-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1522, the very night they were wed, Royce Morgan and his new bride, Beatrice Godwin, were murdered on their way home to Lacybourne Manor. After the cruel deed was done, a local witch came across their bodies, witnessing firsthand the tragedy of star-crossed lovers. Vowing that Royce and Beatrice would someday uncross those stars, using magic mixed with murder as well as true love, she linked their spirits together with hers (because someone had to protect them) forever… or until their reincarnated souls find happily ever after. Now arrogant, forbidding Colin Morgan lives at Lacybourne, knowing, from lore (as well as the portraits of Royce and Beatrice that hang in Lacybourne’s hall and the small fact that he looks exactly like Royce Morgan), that he is the reincarnated soul of his ancestor. One stormy night, flighty, free-spirited, scarily kind-hearted Sibyl Godwin comes to Lacybourne and it doesn’t escape Colin’s notice that Sibyl is the spitting image of Beatrice. However murder, magic, a warrior’s heart beating in a modern man’s chest, a woman bent on doing good deeds even if they get her into loads of trouble, a good witch whose family has vowed throughout the centuries to protect true love, distrust and revenge make a volatile cocktail. This means the path to happily ever after is paved with tranquiliser darts, pensioners on a rampage, Sibyl’s bad morning moods, heartbreaking misunderstandings and all kinds of magic, good… and bad.
