Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus was born in Bethlehem, but why Bethlehem? Why should God purpose to become man somewhere so marginal, so insignificant? This book follows the unfolding story of Bethlehem through the Bible, from the death of Rachel to the birth of Jesus, uniquely combining four perspectives: a) the Bible as one developing story, b) the Bible as a Middle Eastern book, c) insights from contemporary Palestinians from Bethlehem, and d) what this means for mission. Suffering Rachel, refugee Rahab, vulnerable Ruth, overlooked David all have a connection with Bethlehem. If Bethlehem shelters refugees, then so must we. If Bethlehem welcomes strangers, so must we. If Bethlehem weeps at injustice, and takes a stand against empire, so must we. What we see in Bethlehem's story, we apply to our own stories. We enter into Bethlehem's story with as much cultural and geographical colour and flavour as we can muster in order to feel the crises, taste the dust, hear the lambs bleating on the hillside. And there we find the Christ-child, son of David, the Good Shepherd, Lion of Judah, Bread of Life, Lamb of God, fulfilling all the recurring themes, taking his inevitable place as rightful king.

Book excerpt: As I researched for the economy of Jesus, I came across an interesting discovery. The diet of the Israelites had dramatically changed from meat to fish. When you follow Jesus around the Sea of Galilee, you realize most of Jesus' disciples were fishermen, and the two miracles of feeding the 4,000 and 5,000 were involved with fish and bread, and people from the neighboring ten towns flocked to Galilee for His healing, preaching, and an easy living. I was not surprised that the Israelites consumed fish extensively. It was Jesus' way of creating that exuberant fish industry to draw people to Him and incubate more Christians than ever. He has promised us through the whole Bible that whoever believes in Him will have an eternal and abundant life. Today, I am not lacking because I have discovered His secret and would like to share it with you. But first thing first: believe every word in the Bible. Some Christians may have heard of Qumran, commonly called the Dead Sea Scrolls, which prove the authenticity of the Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts of the Old Testament and the rest of the books in the Bible, but they may not have realized that hundreds of credited evangelical leaders, theologians, and scholars had agreed and signed off on the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy. If you know the Bible we have in our hand today has gone through a long process of canonization, then you will look at it differently, and you will believe every word it says. If you want that spiritually and physically abundant life, you have to believe every word it says. Look at the Biblical Patriarchs, did they have abundant lives or second-rate ones? Yes, we could have a better life, the secret is in God Rocks!

Book excerpt: Sixteen year-old Ewan Mao knows one thing for certain: according to prophecy, it's his destiny to kill the evil tyrant whose dark reign has terrorized Britain for as long as he can remember. Although he's just a normal boy, deep down Ewan is confident that he has exactly what it takes to be a hero. But when Ewan's big moment comes and his best friend, the clever and talented Oliver Abrams, defeats the villain for him, Ewan's bright future crumbles before his eyes. Five years later, while Ewan is living at home and working a minimum wage job, Oliver has a job as an Unusual in the government's Serious Magical Crimes Agency, the life he and Ewan always dreamed of. A routine investigation leads him and his partner, Sophie Stuart, to uncover a dangerous and powerful cult... one that seems to have drawn his former best friend into a plot to end the world. A deftly plotted, hysterically funny journey through magical London and beyond, A Hero at the End of the World expertly walks the fine line between satire and sincerity. Its sensitive depiction of a broken friendship and wry takedown of unfairly great expectations will appeal to all readers of modern fantasy.

Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.
