Book excerpt: Over the past several decades, public concern over exposure to ionizing radiation has increased. This concern has manifested itself in different ways depending on the perception of risk to different individuals and different groups and the circumstances of their exposure. One such group are those U.S. servicemen (the "Atomic Veterans" who participated in the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons at the Nevada Test Site or in the Pacific Proving Grounds, who served with occupation forces in or near Hiroshima and Nagasaki, or who were prisoners of war in or near those cities at the time of, or shortly after, the atomic bombings. This book addresses the feasibility of conducting an epidemiologic study to determine if there is an increased risk of adverse reproductive outcomes in the spouses, children, and grandchildren of the Atomic Veterans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our ability to manipulate short wavelength radiation (0.01-100nm, equivalent to 120keV-12eV) has increased significantly over the last three decades. This has lead to major advances in applications in a wide range of disciplines such as: the life and medical sciences, including cancer-related studies; environmental science, including studies of pollution and its effects; archaeology and other cultural heritage disciplines; and materials science. Although expansion in application areas is due largely to modern synchrotron sources, many applications will not become widespread, and therefore routinely available as analytical tools, if they are confined to synchrotrons. This is because synchrotrons require enormous capital and infrastructure costs and are often, of necessity, national or international facilities. This seriously limits their scope for applications in research and analysis, in both academia and industry. How many universities, research institutes or even industrial laboratories would have electron microscopes if electron sources cost ú100M or more Hence the need to develop bright but small and (relatively) cheap x-ray sources, not to replace synchrotrons but to complement them. Written by a distinguished team of international authors this exemplary new handbook is based on the COST Action MP0601: Short Wavelength Laboratory Sources. The contents are divided into five main sections. The introductory section provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of radiation, generation mechanisms and short wavelength laboratory sources. The middle sections focus on modelling and simulation, source development: improvement and characterisation and integrated systems: sources, optics and detectors. The final section looks at recent applications.

Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been considerable renewed interest in the development of novel devices for the production of high power coherent electromagnetic radiation. This interest has been motivated largely by the realization that, with existing technology, certain processes utilizing relativistic electron beams can produce coherent electromagnetic radiation at power levels far in excess of those achieved by conventional electron devices. This paper will review the current status of this rapidly developing field, with emphasis on two generic devices. The major thrust in the recent development of electron beam driven radiation sources has been directed towards achieving shorter wavelengths, greater power and higher efficiencies. Shortly after the development of such successful sources as the magnetron, kylstron and various traveling wave devices, it became clear that, in their original form, they were limited in their ability to produce high levels of radiation efficiently at short wavelengths. To circumvent the inherent limitations of these conventional coherent radiation sources, many new concepts and mechanisms, as well as variations on conventional concepts, were proposed. This paper is concerned primarily with two devices which are, relatively speaking, newcomers to the list of coherent classical radiation sources. They are the free electron laser and the cyclotron resonance maser (CRM); one well known type of CRM is the gyrotron.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Climates is the first full synthesis of modern scientific and applied research on urban climates. The book begins with an outline of what constitutes an urban ecosystem. It develops a comprehensive terminology for the subject using scale and surface classification as key constructs. It explains the physical principles governing the creation of distinct urban climates, such as airflow around buildings, the heat island, precipitation modification and air pollution, and it then illustrates how this knowledge can be applied to moderate the undesirable consequences of urban development and help create more sustainable and resilient cities. With urban climate science now a fully-fledged field, this timely book fulfills the need to bring together the disparate parts of climate research on cities into a coherent framework. It is an ideal resource for students and researchers in fields such as climatology, urban hydrology, air quality, environmental engineering and urban design.

Book excerpt: As described by the title the grant funds were used to support a project whose primary goal was the development of tunable coherent sources for the THz-FIR region of the spectrum. The THz or more generally the FIR extends from 0.3 x 10(exp 12) (0.3THz) to 30 x 10(exp 12) (30THz) or alternatively from a wavelength of 1 mm down to a wavelength of 10 gm. It is a range of the spectrum that has been a long standing challenge. Microwave technology which has been extraordinarily successful at wavelengths longer than 1 mm and classical and quantum optical techniques which are extremely effective in the visible, near and mid infrared regions of the spectrum encounter fundamental challenges when extended (respectively) to longer or shorter wavelengths. Continued interest in "opening up" and exploiting the FIR region of the spectrum is based on the scientific questions which in part demand an access to the THz-FIR spectral range. These extend from atmospheric and biophysics to plasma physics and radio astronomy. Important technological applications also exist. Among the examples would be radar modeling, characterization of the response of near millimeter wave (NMMW) systems and the potential for short range high resolution radar. The immediate scientific and engineering goals of the project supported by the equipment grant provide a source that is tunable, narrow band and provides sufficient power for spectroscopic investigations. In the longer term a compact conveniently packaged sources and potential and requirements needed to reach higher power operation are of interest. The grating couples the beam with the electromagnetic field provides distributed feedback which reacts back on the beam and in turn leads to bunching of the beam. The density bunches produce the coherent operation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technological advances have occurred in the past few years that have made linac based Free-Electron Lasers (FEL) promising candidates for the generation of short wavelength radiation. Although the FELs use undulators or wigglers, they produce stimulated radiation rather than the spontaneous emission found in insertion devices on the second and third generation sources of today. This stimulated emission process endows the FEL with properties presenting unique opportunities in many fields of science. Among these characteristics are: coherence, spectral brightness, peak power, high average power. Additional scope for experimental growth is provided by the flexible pulse structure of linac based sources, making possible developments in high resolution timing experiments. Invited presentations to the working group on linac based radiation sources covered various key subjects, aiming at establishing the ground work for various machine designs. Design issues of FEL light sources were worked out in a few sessions, including sub-group sessions. We have also discussed the question of R & D necessary for the development of high quality FEL light sources. A high priority was placed on laser photocathode rf gun development, emittance preservation and FEL mechanism studies. This report describes the technological foundation for high brightness beams, the design of FELs using these beams and recommendations for research and development in FEL physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle Accelerator Physics covers the dynamics of relativistic particle beams, basics of particle guidance and focusing, lattice design, characteristics of beam transport systems and circular accelerators. Particle-beam optics is treated in the linear approximation including sextupoles to correct for chromatic aberrations. Perturbations to linear beam dynamics are analyzed in detail and correction measures are discussed, while basic lattice design features and building blocks leading to the design of more complicated beam transport systems and circular accelerators are studied. Characteristics of synchrotron radiation and quantum effects due to the statistical emission of photons on particle trajectories are derived and applied to determine particle-beam parameters. The discussions specifically concentrate on relativistic particle beams and the physics of beam optics in beam transport systems and circular accelerators such as synchrotrons and storage rings. This book forms a broad basis for further, more detailed studies of nonlinear beam dynamics and associated accelerator physics problems, discussed in the subsequent volume.
