Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents Sandy's Mended Heart by Norah crowley This story follows Sandy, a 19-year-old woman, as she makes the difficult transition from living in an insular religious community to “outside” life in a college town. Sandy struggles with: • Living alone when she has always been surrounded by a close family; • Meeting different types of people when she has always been in a small community; • Making her way with new people who don’t think or act like those at home—she has to figure out how they think and what they actually mean by what they say and how they act; • Meeting men who live and work in environments – a college campus, a military base—that are the total opposites of the community she has known all her life; • Dealing with her need to find love, and hopefully a marriage, in a new world, without the guidelines of her strict community or the oversight of her family; • Falling in love with a man who is so totally different from her father, brothers, cousins and all the men she has known in her life, and in fact is a soldier, someone whom her pacifist religious community would find totally unacceptable; • Finding a church home and a place where she can live with her strong religious convictions even though she does not totally accept the limitations of her original church; • Coping with love and loss, putting lessons of forgiveness into practice, and picking up the pieces of a broken heart without becoming bitter. When everything seems to be going as planned, how do you handle a shadowed past that threatens your happiness? This story brings to light how our past transgressions can either tear us apart or bring us closer together. • Realizing that the past is a part of who we are, but doesn’t define us • Life is too short to let past Wrongdoings take hold of our hearts • Believing in your heart that something is real and not looking for it in the reassurance of others • Love is worth fighting for, both emotionally and physically • History doesn’t always repeat itself, especially when it comes to finding love in the arms of someone different About the Writer Summer Anderson is a mother, wife, animal advocate, writer and long-time lover of the game of golf. Her passion lies in writing from the heart, and on topics that are most important to the Millennial generation along with the occasional fictional love story. She hopes to impact those through her writing and advice on marketing and social media communication. Summer is married to her wonderful husband, Bob, and they have two lively kiddos – Heath and Autumn. When not enjoying a family game night, Summer can be found on the golf courses of Pennsylvania, enjoying a good of cup of coffee or hanging out with her pets. Professionally, Summer has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts from Allegheny College in Meadville and a Master of Arts in Marketing from Edinboro University. She currently works as an administrative assistant, and in her spare time, she freelances in writing, graphic design and website creation. She hopes that her stories will inspire others to write or to pursue their love of a good story that has yet to be written. Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

A family of children try to make their way home to their older brother, who is their guardian, when a bit of environmental fallout gets in their way. Some personal changes make the journey even more interesting for the one “normal” member of the family You will enjoy this story if you: • Enjoy reading mythology. • Like mystery stories. • Enjoy family oriented short stories. • Believe family member should take care of each other. • Believe in the power of love and self-sacrifice. • Have a family of your own. • Enjoy reading urban fantasy. • Ever believed there were fairies, little green men, or things that go bump in the night – even for a couple of minutes. • Like reading stories based on the Heinleinian writing principal of “what if”. • Relax by spending few tense moments reading about the troubles other people have and are glad yours are not that bad. This story is a tribute to the many hours my mother spent reading aloud and telling stories to me, and to the hours I have spent hearing the new stories written by my own children. Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents Requiem For a Coma by Stephanie Willis • This story teaches that a state of despair is no manner in which to live. • Often, when someone has been in a coma, they come out with memories (more likely hallucinations), that seem so real they really appear to have happened. Coma patients frequently remember things so vividly they appear to be real memories. • This story imparts the healing power of a person who is simply “willing to care” for someone, even if it can cause them pain. • When we lose everything, we tend to gain nothing back without help and support of loved ones. • This book describes the many trials and tribulations that coma patients go through. One would consider this counterintuitive, being that one is considered “unconscious” when in a coma. I can testify personally, however, that when you are in a coma, you are not asleep. It’s a sort of dream sort of state. • Most of all, this story tries to convey the message not to give up the tough times for easier ones if it’s not right. Sometimes we must all bear seemingly unbearable pain. Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

Well, you become vulnerable and that’s what happened to Eddie, only he does not really know what is wrong with him until a meeting that will literally change his world and, in a very real way, his life. One day, as it is his habit, Eddie has stepped in a virtual travel cabin looking for a distraction from his bleak life and on an impulse he has made the journey to the era of 1950’s. An era that is so very different from his universe, somewhere in a not so distant, cold and unfriendly future, that Eddie is immediately fascinated with what he sees, with this much simpler and warmer life. He feels himself becoming alive again. There he also meets Marylyn, a pretty waitress working in a snack bar. She is so different from the women he has been keeping company with that Eddie feels himself attracted to her, attracted to how real and transparent she is. However, his engineer’s mind immediately sees the problem: Marylyn is not real and is the product of sophisticated computer coding. He tries to rationalise his attraction for her, but nothing can convince his heart and that is where the trouble starts. Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.
