Book Synopsis Memoir of Italo Svevo by : Livia Veneziani Svevo
Download or read book Memoir of Italo Svevo written by Livia Veneziani Svevo and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Italian Italo Svevo had many things in common with other writers: a long struggle for recognition, a mutually respectful friendship with a noteworthy author (in Svevo's case, James Joyce), and a long list of neuroses. Unlike some writers, however, Svevo was fortunate to have a wife who worked tirelessly on his behalf." "After Svevo's death in 1928 at the age of sixty-six, Livia Veneziani Svevo penned this portrait of a serious artist and a loving, if quirky, marriage. Memoir of Italo Svevo illuminates its subject's darkly comic novels and shows how a successful middle-aged businessman, as obsessed with smoking as with his abandoned literary ambitions, became one of the great authors of the twentieth century." --Book Jacket.

Book Synopsis History in Exile by : Pamela Ballinger
Download or read book History in Exile written by Pamela Ballinger and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decade after World War II, up to 350,000 ethnic Italians were displaced from the border zone between Italy and Yugoslavia known as the Julian March. History in Exile reveals the subtle yet fascinating contemporary repercussions of this often overlooked yet contentious episode of European history. Pamela Ballinger asks: What happens to historical memory and cultural identity when state borders undergo radical transformation? She explores displacement from both the viewpoints of the exiles and those who stayed behind. Yugoslavia's breakup and Italy's political transformation in the early 1990s, she writes, allowed these people to bring their histories to the public eye after nearly half a century. Examining the political and cultural contexts in which this understanding of historical consciousness has been formed, Ballinger undertakes the most extensive fieldwork ever done on this subject--not only around Trieste, where most of the exiles settled, but on the Istrian Peninsula (Croatia and Slovenia), where those who stayed behind still live. Complementing this with meticulous archival research, she examines two sharply contrasting models of historical identity yielded by the "Istrian exodus": those who left typically envision Istria as a "pure" Italian land stolen by the Slavs, whereas those who remained view it as ethnically and linguistically "hybrid." We learn, for example, how members of the same family, living a short distance apart and speaking the same language, came to develop a radically different understanding of their group identities. Setting her analysis in engaging, jargon-free prose, Ballinger concludes that these ostensibly very different identities in fact share a startling degree of conceptual logic.

Book Synopsis Translating Travel by : Loredana Polezzi
Download or read book Translating Travel written by Loredana Polezzi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translating Travel examines the relationship between travel writing and translation, asking what happens when books travel beyond the narrow confines of one genre, one literary system and one culture. The volume takes as its starting point the marginal position of contemporary Italian travel writing in the Italian literary system, and proposes a comparative reading of originals and translations designed to highlight the varying reception of texts in different cultures. Two main themes in the book are the affinity between the representations produced by travel and the practices of translation, and the complex links between travel writing and genres such as ethnography, journalism, autobiography and fiction. Individual chapters are devoted to Italian travellers' accounts of Tibet and their English translations; the hybridization of journalism and travel writing in the works of Oriana Fallaci; Italo Calvino's sublimation of travel writing in the stylized fiction of Le città invisibili; and the complex network of literary references which marked the reception of Claudio Magris's Danubio in different cultures.
