Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Catholic Church in England When our Saviour sent forth His Apostles to preach the Gospel_ Britain had already come under the power of the Roman Emperors. In the designs of God's providence this vast empire was destined to aid in spreading far and wide the Christian faith. And so it came to pass that this distant island and Jerusalem, where by Christ's death on the cross the redemption of the world was accomplished, then formed parts of a worldwide organised system of government whose centre was at Rome. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England and the Catholic Church Under Queen Elizabeth I am indebted for a few documents which throw light on the doings of English pirates in the Mediterranean (appendix Papers in the Vatican suggested the idea of making researches in this little used collection. Among English archives, the most important are those belonging to the catholic cathedral of Westminster. No others can compare with them in value for the inner history of English catholicism. As their contents, however, are of importance only from the end of the sixteenth century, the letters, reports, and memorials of English catholics and Roman officials which they contain, are only of service for the last chapter of this volume. The rich treasures of the Public Record Office have been already largely made public in the Calendars of State Papers. However, for some series (especially Italian Sizzler), I have been able to draw upon fresh sources of information. As regards the results yielded by the Recusant Rolls, I must refer to Ch. I., 4. The British Museum and the Bodleian Library were invaluable to me on account of their original editions of royal proclamations, and, above all, for their rich store of pamphlets and broadsides. For although it was only in the seventeenth century that the classical period of political pamphleteering dawned for England, still as early as the time of Elizabeth, broadsides and pamphlets had become such a power in public life that no student of history can pass over these sources of information with impunity. This is perhaps more true for the history of English catholicism than for any other department (cf. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Catholic ChurchThe following pages are an attempt to give within a limited compass the main outlines of the events which make up the Story of the Catholic Church. That story is one that has no equal, whether we consider the number of persons, places, and vicissitudes involved, or the real importance of the interests at stake. It is, in fact, the very width and diversity of the subject matter which help to make it difficult to weave into one connected narrative. Yet, it is not without a centre. There is a unity in the subject strong enough to give form to the multitude of details, if only it can be properly handled. The problem for a writer must therefore be the accomplishment of this. Is there any hope of rising to his great argument, at least so far as to furnish an intelligible sketch of the mighty panorama unrolled before him? Nothing less than this hope assuredly would give heart to anyone to attempt the task. In such an enterprise as this a perfect work is, of course, out of the question. An outline that shall be true as far as it goes, not indeed showing everything, but mindful of balance and proportion and connection, would recompense much toil. And this is all that the present book aims at. To present that matchless story from one point of view in a way that any reader can understand, carrying him on from age to age and from land to land without undue weariness or distraction, but not forgetting the abiding centre and living unity which govern it, this has been the author's aim.Hence, although the plan of the book has needed some thought, and its details not inconsiderable labour, it can lay no claim to be a work of research. It has no new and startling secrets to reveal, no abstruse theories to discuss. It would not be a field adequate for such; but nothing has been put down which did not seem warranted by the facts.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Church in Great Britain It is in the fourth century that we first hear, on what is pro bably sound evidence, of the name of a British Christian. Near where the town of S. Albans now stands there was a Roman camp, and there a soldier saved the life of a Christian priest, and from him learnt the faith of Christ. He was ordered to deny Christ, and do sacrifice to the Roman gods. He refused, and was martyred. His name was Alban, and some say (probably it is a mistake) that he had a companion named Amphi balus. On the place where he suffered, then called Verulamium, rose in later years a town and a great abbey which took its name from him. The persecution in which Alban was martyred soon passed away, and the number of Christians rapidly increased. In 314 three British bishops, with a priest and deacon, attended a church council at Arles, in southern Gaul. These bishops came from York, London, and Lincoln, all important cities in the fourth century. A few years later British bishops attended other councils (sardice, 343; Ariminum, Christian inscriptions survive in Dorset, Yorkshire, Gloucestershire, at Cirencester and at Bath and there were certainly Christian churches at Silchester and at Canterbury while the Romans still ruled the land. Early in the fifth century the Romans abandoned Britain. They left behind them an organised civilisation and a Christian Church which had spread to Cornwall and Wales, and was soon to extend its influence across the Tyne. The Church was in union with the Church over sea. It received and taught the Catholic faith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Position of the Catholic Church in England and Wales During the Last Two Centuries: Retrospect and Forecast The future of the Church in England trembles in the balance. Much depends on what the living generation may do to mould the future. The mistake of thinking that England would rapidly return to the Faith - this delusion which prevailed in the middle of the now declining century-is not wholly destroyed; until it is so, there is little hope of real progress. Such a mistake was a source of great and far-reaching calamity. In the place of building small but numerous mission-houses, men founded churches - nay, cathedrals. Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pounds were expended on the execution of the designs of clever architects. The building of the walls of Jerusalem was overlooked in the erection of churches made with hands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Catholic Revival A story moves us in proportion as it appeals to our imagination, and the narrative which is given in the following pages pre-eminently makes such an appeal. It is the story of men whose lives were given to a cause which stretches back into the distant past, intimately concerns the present, and must be the most potent factor in the history of the future. It is the history of principles, and the record of events, the importance of which - less clearly apprehended at the time they occurred - reveal themselves, when seen in the perspective of the past, as the determining causes which control the course of history and the destinies of the world. For Christians the key to human history is to be found in the purposes of God for the Church, and none can be really acquainted with the history of the Church of England for the last eighty years without realizing that the Catholic Revival in the Church of England is not merely, as it has so well been called, "the Romance of the 19th Century," but the fact which gives the history of that century in England its real interest, and invests it not merely with a national, but with a world-wide importance. That history is well told by Mr. Kelway in the pages to which these few words are prefixed. It is a history which speaks for itself, and which wants no words of commendation from such as myself.
