This short collection of fifty poems by first-time author and long-time overthinker Henry Arguelles chronicles his search for meaning and insight through love and heartbreak, but also parenting, religion, and mortality. Mostly through heartbreak and failed relationships, though. As an added bonus: some of the poems actually rhyme! Three of the poems can be found on my Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook pages, if you'd like a sample of what's inside: https: //twitter.com/henry_arguelles https: //instagram.com/henry.arguelles/ https: //www.facebook.com/henry.arguelles.001

Book excerpt: A New York Times New & Noteworthy Book • "Strange and affectionate, like Almost Famous penned by Shakespeare. A love letter to music in all its myriad iterations."—Kirkus Reviews • "This book has no business being as good as it is."—Christian Wiman In the year 2063, on the edge of the Crater formerly known as Montréal, a middle-aged man and his ex’s daughter search for a cult hero: the leader of a short-lived band named after a forgotten work of poetry and known to fans through a forgotten work of music criticism. In this exuberantly plotted verse novel, Guriel follows an obsessive cult-following through the twenty-first century. Some things change (there’s metamorphic smart print for music mags; the Web is called the “Zuck”). Some things don’t (poetry readings are still, mostly, terrible). But the characters, including a robot butler who stands with Ishiguro’s Stevens as one of the great literary domestics, are unforgettable. Splicing William Gibson with Roberto Bolaño, Pale Fire with Thomas Pynchon, Forgotten Work is a time-tripping work of speculative fiction. It’s a love story about fandom, an ode to music snobs, a satire on the human need to value the possible over the actual—and a verse novel of Nabokovian virtuosity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Top Five Classics illustrated edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven includes: • All 25 illustrations by Gustave Doré for Harper & Brothers’ 1884 edition • An informative Introduction • A detailed Biography of Edgar Allan Poe • The illustrated version and text-only version of the full poem No poem has ever received the kind of immediate and overwhelming response that Poe’s “The Raven” did when it first appeared in the New York Evening Mirror on January 29, 1845. It made Poe an overnight sensation (though his great fame never brought him much wealth) and the poem, a powerfully haunting elegy to lost love, remains one of the most beloved and recognizable verses in the English language. The illustrations that accompany this Top Five Classics edition are reproductions of the renowned French artist Gustave Doré’s steel-plate engravings created for Harper & Brothers’ 1884 release of The Raven. It would be Doré’s last commission as he died shortly after completing the 25 illustrations in January 1883. His illustrations would become famous in their own right, evoking as they do the lyrical and mystical air of Poe’s masterpiece.

Book excerpt: The book is a collection of poems, short stories, essays, songs and prose by Billy Randal Maynard of Harold, Kentucky. The wide variety of writings come from inspiring events in his life in the rolling hills of eastern Kentucky, and from (according to the author) direct inspiration from God. Sometimes the story would "swirl around" in the author's mind for weeks or months before coming into print. At other times, a poem would be written the same evening as the inspiration. Billy began writing as a young teenager. While attending college at nearby Pikeville College, he wrote some of his first works. The book carries a lot of spirituality because Mr. Maynard was a minister for several years before a tumultuous divorce that created havoc in his family. He still remains a staunch Christian and sings often in his hometown church on occasion. Over the years, Billy has written many poems for departed loved ones. These can be appreciated by any and all who read them. The collection covers a span of more than thirty years. On several occasions, some of the poems and especially the short stories, Incident and Walkertown, and The Fight, have been recognized for their originality and actually won a writers contest in the early eighties. Some of the more noteworthy poems have been published by poetry.com and posted on the internet. There is a section in the book dedicated to the poems, the author deems to be the most inspired (the Author''s Picks). There is tremendous variety in the book, and something for everyone. It begins with a poem about aborted babies, entitled, "I Could Have Been." It is heavenly inspired, but incorporates the feelings of the author, and his belief that poetry should have "rhyme and rhythm." There are some profound things coming out of his work, "that had to come from above." (according to the author); that is for the reader to decide!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although he had a short career, German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche was a prolific writer, publishing seventeen books in the span of seventeen years. Convinced that “style must live,” he focused obsessively on a wide variety of factors that could potentially affect readers’ uptake of his work, from the craft of preface writing to punctuation choices to the aesthetics of book jackets. Nietzsche as Stylist traces the emergence of the philosopher’s idiosyncratic writing style as he experimented with various rhetorical approaches. Introducing a contextual and historical sensibility to readings of Nietzsche’s published and unpublished works – as well as his correspondence, his journal entries, and other documents he interacted with, such as reviews of his work – the book highlights how Nietzsche’s style evolved in relation to his life and world. Martine Béland situates his writings within contemporaneous debates about the professionalization of academia: by resisting what he felt was an anti-philosophical climate, Nietzsche developed a synesthetic and performative style, hoping that his philosophical ideas could engage diverse readers in multiple ways. Through careful stylistic and contextual analysis, Nietzsche as Stylist explores how Nietzsche cultivated skills as a rhetorician and a writer to bring philosophy into a wider field of attention, thought, and experience.

Book excerpt: “Mesmerizing, magical, deeply moving.” —Elif Shafak Expanding on the popular podcast of the same name from On Being Studios, Poetry Unbound offers immersive reflections on fifty powerful poems. In the tumult of our contemporary moment, poetry has emerged as an inviting, consoling outlet with a unique power to move and connect us, to inspire fury, tears, joy, laughter, and surprise. This generous anthology pairs fifty illuminating poems with poet and podcast host Pádraig Ó Tuama’s appealing, unhurried reflections. With keen insight and warm personal anecdotes, Ó Tuama considers each poem’s artistry and explores how its meaning can reach into our own lives. Focusing mainly on poets writing today, Ó Tuama engages with a diverse array of voices that includes Ada Limón, Ilya Kaminsky, Margaret Atwood, Ocean Vuong, Layli Long Soldier, and Reginald Dwayne Betts. Natasha Trethewey meditates on miscegenation and Mississippi; Raymond Antrobus makes poetry out of the questions shot at him by an immigration officer; Martín Espada mourns his father; Marie Howe remembers and blesses her mother’s body; Aimee Nezhukumatathil offers comfort to her child-self. Through these wide-ranging poems, Ó Tuama guides us on an inspiring journey to reckon with self-acceptance, history, independence, parenthood, identity, joy, and resilience. For anyone who has wanted to try their hand at a conversation with poetry but doesn’t know where to start, Poetry Unbound presents a window through which to celebrate the art of being alive.
