Book excerpt: The chapters in this book are devoted to the elementary reactions of small molecules in the gas phase, with some emphasis on reactions important in combustion. The first three chapters cover experimental measurements made at high temperatures, mainly using shock waves and flames; the final chapter describes discharge flow methods near room temperature. The authors-all active in the fields they describe were asked to aim at a level intermediate between a textbook and a review, designed for readers not already familiar with this branch of chemical kinetics. We hope the book will prove especially useful to research workers in related subjects, to research students, and perhaps as source material for the preparation of lectures. The examples have been chosen to illustrate the theoretical basis of the topics rather than attempt a complete coverage. Professors Wagner and Troe describe the remarkable progress made in recent years in measuring dissociation rates for small molecules. Tests ofunimolecular reaction theories are usually made in the 'fall-off' region of pressure: the kinetics change from first order to second order as the pressure is reduced. For large molecules this region lies below atmospheric pressure and is relatively easily accessible. For molecules with four or less atoms, however, the fall-off region lies well above atmospheric pressure: it has been explored using the high pressure shock tube techniques developed by the authors.

Book excerpt: The high temperatures generated in gases by shock waves give rise to physical and chemical phenomena such as molecular vibrational excitation, dissociation, ionization, chemical reactions and inherently related radiation. In continuum regime, these processes start from the wave front, so that generally the gaseous media behind shock waves may be in a thermodynamic and chemical non-equilibrium state. This book presents the state of knowledge of these phenomena. Thus, the thermodynamic properties of high temperature gases, including the plasma state are described, as well as the kinetics of the various chemical phenomena cited above. Numerous results of measurement and computation of vibrational relaxation times, dissociation and reaction rate constants are given, and various ionization and radiative mechanisms and processes are presented. The coupling between these different phenomena is taken into account as well as their interaction with the flow-field. Particular points such as the case of rarefied flows and the inside of the shock wave itself are also examined. Examples of specific non-equilibrium flows are given, generally corresponding to those encountered during spatial missions or in shock tube experiments.

It is experimentally shown that real flow of nonreacting gas in shock tube strongly differs from that obtained from theory. Experiments with reacting mixtures showed that investigation of kinetics of exothermic reactions in shock tubes is complicated by disturbance of uniformity of flow of gas and deviation of parameters of flow from values calculated theoretically. Delays of ignition of this mixture in region of temperatures 1500-2400K and pressures 3-20 atm are determined. (Author).

Book excerpt: During the last 30 years our knowledge and understanding of molecular processes has followed the development of increasingly sophisticated tech niques for studying fast reactions. Although the results are reported in papers and reviews, it is sometimes difficult for those not themselves active in these fields to find their way through the mass of published material. We hope that each book in this series will present a clear account of the present state of knowledge in a particular field of physical chemistry to research workers in related fields, to research students, and for the preparation of undergraduate and post-graduate lectures. Each chapter describes the theoretical develop ment of one area of study and the appropriate experimental techniques; the results presented are chosen to illustrate the theory rather than to attempt a comprehensive review. The first volume published in 1972 was concerned with the reactions of small molecules and free radicals in the gas phase. The development of flash photolysis in the 1950s paved the way by making it possible to generate free radicals in sufficient concentration for a spectroscopic" snapshot" to reveal their molecular structure. Their role in kinetic systems could then be followed directly, rather than be inferred from mechanism. The shock tube enabled gas mixtures to be heated to any desired temperature in a time which was shorter than subsequent chemical reactions. Discharge-flow methods enabled the reactions of atoms and free radicals to be studied directly.

In particular, a system is discussed which may directly be applied to the mixture of nitrogen tetroxide, dioxide and nitrogen under investigation. The treatment is divided as follows: (1) shock and equilibrium Hugoniot calculations are presented; (2) calculated conditions for the shock tube are compared with those experimentally determined; (3) conditions in the chemical relaxation zone are calculated assuming a known reaction rate law; (4) a method for direct calculation of rate constants from the absorption traces is presented.
