Book excerpt: The reactions of OH radicals with hydrocarbons have received a great deal of attention in recent years because of these processes are principal steps in the oxidation of organic fuels -- whether occurring in combustion/propulsion systems, in the atmosphere, or elsewhere. Of the various radicals capable of attacking hydrocarbons, OH radicals are generally the most reactive, and their reactions directly yield water molecules, one of the major final oxidation products. In the atmosphere, the combined effect of the OH radical's reactivity and concentration make it the single species that determines the atmospheric lifetime of an organic substance. The principal goals of the kineticist in the field of oxidation chemistry are (1) to measure as many elementary reaction rate coefficients as are conveniently studied in the laboratory; and (2) to develop theoretical and/or semiempirical tools for extrapolating from measured rate coefficients to unmeasured ones. The latter step is necessary because of the sheer number of reactions of possible interest.

Book excerpt: To extend the database of reliable high temperature measurements of OH radicals with hydrocarbons and other fuels and their decomposition products, we undertook, a research program with both experimental and computational tasks. The experimental goal was to design a procedure for measuring, at combustion temperatures, the reaction rate coefficients of OH radicals with fuels and other species of importance in combustion or propulsion systems. The computational effort was intended to refine the semi-empirical thermochemical kinetics/ transition-state-theory (TK-TST) procedures for extrapolating rate coefficients of reactions of OH with combustion species of interest, for predicting rate coefficients for species not studied in the laboratory, and to examine the ability of the theory to predict rate coefficients for different pathways in cases where the reagent possessed nonequivalent H atoms.

Book excerpt: Shock heating t-butyl hydroperoxide behind a reflected shock wave has proved to be as a convenient source of hydroxyl radicals at temperatures near 1000 K. We applied this technique to the measurement of reaction rate coefficients of OH with several species of interest in combustion chemistry, and developed a thermochemical kinetics/transition state theory (TK-TST) model for predicting the temperature dependence of OH rate coefficients.

Book excerpt: The scientific and economic importance of the high-temperature reactions of hydrocarbons in both the presence and absence of oxygen cannot be overemphasized. A vast chemical industry exists based on feedstocks produced by the controlled pyrolysis of hydrocarbons, while uncontrolled combustion in air is still among the most important sources of heat and mechanical energy. The detonation and explosion of hydrocarbon-oxidant mixtures can however, be a highly dangerous phenomenon which destroys lives and equipment. In order that control can be exerted over combustion processes, a complete description of hydrocarbon oxidation and pyrolysis is required. A major contribution to this is an understanding of the unstable intermediates involved and their reactions. The aim of this book is to review our knowledge of the chemistry of hydrocarbon combustion and to consider the data which are available for relevant reactions. Chapter 1 describes early studies in which the apparent complexity of the chemistry was established and the type of information required for a better understanding was defined. Experimental studies of the overall process which were carried out with the aim of establishing the sequence of stable chemical intermediates and some of the unstable species are described in Chapter 2. The limited nature of the information thus obtained showed that independent studies of individual reactions involving the unstable species were required. In Chapter 3 investigations specifically aimed at the determination of the kinetics of elementary reactions are discussed.

Book excerpt: The reactions: (1) H + O2 = OH + O; and (2) O + H2 = OH + H are the most important elementary reactions in gas phase combustion. They are the main chain-branching reaction in the oxidation of H2 and hydrocarbon fuels. In this study, rate coefficients of the reactions and have been measured over a wide range of composition, pressure, density and temperature behind the reflected shock waves. The experiments were performed using the shock tube - laser absorption spectroscopic technique to monitor OH radicals formed in the shock-heated H2/O2/Ar mixtures. The OH radicals were detected using the P(1)(5) line of (0,0) band of the A(exp 2) Sigma(+) from X(exp 2) Pi transition of OH at 310.023 nm (air). The data were analyzed with the aid of computer modeling. In the experiments great care was exercised to obtain high time resolution, linearity and signal-to-noise. The results are well represented by the Arrhenius expressions. The rate coefficient expression for reaction (1) obtained in this study is k(1) = (7.13 +/- 0.31) x 10(exp 13) exp(-6957+/- 30 K/T) cu cm/mol/s (1050 K less than or equal to T less than or equal to 2500 K) and a consensus expression for k(1) from a critical review of the most recent evaluations of k(1) (including our own) is k(1) = 7.82 x 10(exp 13) exp(-7105 K/T) cu cm/mol/s (960 K less than or equal to T less than or equal to 5300 K). The rate coefficient expression of k(2) is given by k(2) = (1.88 +/- 0.07) x 10(exp 14) exp(-6897 +/- 53 K/T) cu cm/mol/s (1424 K less than or equal to T less than or equal to 2427 K). For k(1), the temperature dependent A-factor and the correlation between the values of k(1) and the inverse reactant densities were not found. In the temperature range of this study, non-Arrhenius expression of k(2) which shows the upward curvature was not supported. Ryu, Si-Ok and Hwang, Soon Muk and Dewitt, Kenneth J. Book excerpt: The aim of the present study is to study the kinetics of elementary reactions of combustion importance at elevated temperatures and pressures. High pressure is encountered in many systems of practical importance such as internal combustion engines and rocket combustion chambers. Several reactions of OH, CH3 and HO2 radicals are studied. The pressure range covered in this study is 1 - 100 bar and the temperature range is 292 - 834 K. The experimental approach used is laser photolysis coupled to UV transient absorption spectroscopy. A unique high pressure heatable flow reactor is employed and a novel approach of direct introduction of liquid precursors using a high pressure syringe pump is developed in this study. Methyl radicals are produced by photolysis of acetone at 193.3 nm. Hydroxyl radicals are generated in the reaction of electronically excited oxygen atoms O(1D), produced in the photolysis of N2O at 193.3 nm with H2O. The reaction of O(1D) and hydroxyl with H2O2 produce hydroperoxy radicals. Temporal profiles of CH3 and HO2 are recorded via absorption at 216.4 and 224 nm, using xenon arc lamp and a spectrograph, OH radicals are monitored via transient absorption of light from a dc discharge H2O/Ar low pressure OH discharge lamp at ca. 308 nm. The absolute intensity of the photolysis light inside the reactor is determined by an accurate in situ actinometry based on the ozone formation in the presence of molecular oxygen. The reactions studied are OH + OH --> products (k[subscript OH+OH]), CH3 + OH --> products (k[subscript CH]3+[subscript OH]), CH3 + CH3 --> products (k[subscript CH]3 + [subscript CH]3), and CH3 +HO2 --> products (k[subscript CH]3+[subscript HO]2). The pressure dependent rate constant in the self-reaction of OH radical is parameterized using the Troe expression as k1[subscript b,inf,OH+OH] = (2.3 ± 0.5)x10−11(T/300)−0[superscript .]5cm3molecule−1s−1, k1b,0,OH+OH = [He] (1.4 ± 0.5)x10−30(T/300)−4[superscript .]6[superscript ±]0[superscript .]5 cm3molecule−1s−1, Fc = 0.37. The V- shaped temperature dependence of disproportionation channel (k[subscript OH+OH->H2O+O]) based on combined current and previous studies in the temperature range of 233 - 2380 K is (5.1 exp(-T/190 K) + 0.30(T/300 K)1[superscript .]73)x10−12cm3molecule−1s−1. The rate constant of the reaction of CH3 and OH is determined as k[subscript CH]3+[subscript OH] = (1.20 ± 0.20)x10−10(T/300)−0[superscript .]49 cm3molecule−1s−1 pressure independent over the 1 - 100 bar range. The rate constant of self reaction of CH3+CH3 is k[subscript CH]3+[subscript CH]3 = 5.94x10−11 (T/300)-0.31−0[superscript .]31cm3molecule−1s−1. The reaction of methyl radicals with hydroperoxy radicals (CH3+HO24products), is studied at 295 K and 1 bar (He). The rate constant is (3.7 ± 1.8)x10−11 cm3molecule−1s−1 (295 K, 1 bar, He).

Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the Symposium on Emissions from Continuous Combustion Systems that was held at the General Motors Research Laboratories, Warren, Michigan on September 27 and 28, 1971. This symposium was the fifteenth in an annual series presented by the Research Laboratories. Each symposium has covered a different technical discipline. To be selected as the theme of a symposium, the subject must be timely and of vital interest to General Motors as well as to the technical community at large. For each symposium, the practice is to solicit papers at the forefront of research from recognized authorities in the technical discipline of interest. Approximately sixty scientists and engineers from academic, government and industrial circles in this country and abroad are then invited to join about an equal number of General Motors technical personnel to discuss freely the commissioned papers. The technical portion of the meeting is supplemented by social functions at which ample time is afforded for informal exchanges of ideas amongst the participants. By such a direct interaction of a small and select group of informed participants, it is hoped to extend the boundaries of research in the selected technical field.
