Sabol and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat-transfer rates at the stagnation point of 1.0-inch-diameter glass spherical models have been measured in shock-tube flows in air which corresponded to free-flight conditions between Mach numbers of 6.4 and 13.9 with stagnation temperatures up to 7,900 degrees R. The heat-transfer rates were determined from measurements of the surface-temperature change with time of a thin-film-platinum resistance thermometer. Test results are presented and compared with the results from the theories of Lees (Jet Propulsion, April 1956) and Fay and Riddell (AVCO Research Report 1). The experimental results obtained give lower heat-transfer rates than both theories but are more compatible with results from the theory of Lees. These test results are also compared with thermocouple data and with the results obtained by the use of similar configurations.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of coolant-to-mainstream density ratio (D.R.) and mass flux (blowing) ratio (Mb) on flat plate heat transfer were investigated in a shock tube. The round-nosed plate has a single row of holes inclined 35 deg downstream with two-diameter lateral spacing and hole length of three diameters. Mixing helium with air in the shock tube produced a D.R. range of 1.2 to 2.1. The parameters studied approach those of film-cooled turbine components. For an Mb range of 0.4 to 3 and 10% mainstream turbulence, heat flux was measured with thin-film heat flux gauges located 4 to 30 hole diameters downstream of the cooling holes using an electrical analog. Various flow conditions were produced over the flat plate. The 'steady' portion of turbulent flow heat transfer data compared within 20% of the theoretical flat plate solution. Ratios of heat flux with cooling to heat flux without cooling versus M. and D.R. were determined. Analysis of the results showed film cooling heat transfer is correlated by coolant-to-mainstream velocity ratio. Effectiveness of cooling was reduced by the high mainstream turbulence.

Book excerpt: It is a pleasure to contribute the foreword to Introduction to Cell and Tissue Culture: The ory and Techniques by Mather and Roberts. Despite the occasional appearance of thought ful works devoted to elementary or advanced cell culture methodology, a place remains for a comprehensive and definitive volume that can be used to advantage by both the novice and the expert in the field. In this book, Mather and Roberts present the relevant method ology within a conceptual framework of cell biology, genetics, nutrition, endocrinology, and physiology that renders technical cell culture information in a comprehensive, logical for mat. This allows topics to be presented with an emphasis on troubleshooting problems from a basis of understanding the underlying theory. The material is presented in a way that is adaptable to student use in formal courses; it also should be functional when used on a daily basis by professional cell culturists in a- demia and industry. The volume includes references to relevant Internet sites and other use ful sources of information. In addition to the fundamentals, attention is also given to mod ern applications and approaches to cell culture derivation, medium formulation, culture scale-up, and biotechnology, presented by scientists who are pioneers in these areas. With this volume, it should be possible to establish and maintain a cell culture laboratory devot ed to any of the many disciplines to which cell culture methodology is applicable.

Book excerpt: Pounder's Marine Diesel Engines and Gas Turbines, Tenth Edition, gives engineering cadets, marine engineers, ship operators and managers insights into currently available engines and auxiliary equipment and trends for the future. This new edition introduces new engine models that will be most commonly installed in ships over the next decade, as well as the latest legislation and pollutant emissions procedures. Since publication of the last edition in 2009, a number of emission control areas (ECAs) have been established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in which exhaust emissions are subject to even more stringent controls. In addition, there are now rules that affect new ships and their emission of CO2 measured as a product of cargo carried. - Provides the latest emission control technologies, such as SCR and water scrubbers - Contains complete updates of legislation and pollutant emission procedures - Includes the latest emission control technologies and expands upon remote monitoring and control of engines

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A double set of turning vanes was carried inside the jet tailpipe. To produce reverse thrust, the tailpipe opens into two side sections and the turning vanes move outward to form a V-shaped cascade, which deflects the exhaust-gas flow. Forward and reverse net thrust were measured over a range of engine speeds with the airplane stationary. Taxi tests were made to determine the comparative stopping distances using wheel braking and reverse thrust separately, and a combination of both. The effect of turning-vane spacing on thrust-reverser performance was determined by scale-model tests using unheated air.
