Book excerpt: Shivapriya was just a child when thugs murdered her parents on the outskirts of their town in Kashmir. From that moment, she was raised by her grandfather, her Dada-ji, in an ashram deep in the Himalaya Mountains of Northern India. It's mostly an idyllic life until their security is threatened by forces from outside their peaceful valley. Just as Shivapriya grows to love Gopi, the man she became betrothed to as a youngster, and they plan a wedding, Gopi dies from injuries suffered in a mysterious accident. Dada-ji determines that Shivapriya's life is also in peril. He arranges for her to travel undetected to New York where he hopes she can begin life anew. But, New York and her adopted family bring their own challenges which test her faith instilled in her by her grandfather years before. A work of cultural heritage fiction, Shivapriya's Dance follows a young girl as she leaves her birth home of India and is forced to survive alone on the cruel streets of the Bronx.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Odyssey of a Dancer captivates the reader right from the first page as it portrays the insurmountable barriers Vasundhara had to cross during the spirited journey to become a world-renowned Bharatanatyam artiste. Even as the nuances of the dance form are dealt with in depth, the book strives to underscore that tradition is not static. The insatiable urge for improvisations to enhance the aesthetic appeal of Bharatanatyam by incorporating elements of Yoga, the martial arts of Tang-Ta and Kalarippayattu and the sacrifices she had to make in this endeavour, makes the book a class of its own. As for Yoga, her exploits in ferreting out the intrinsic components and further correlating them to the fundamental parameters of Bharatanatyam are path-breaking. On the academic front, they provide enough grist to the research-mill that is unprecedentedly active at present in Indian classical dances. Vasundhara’s artistry is a testimony of the interdisciplinary approach to Bharatanatyam, as vouched by critics across the globe. The book further delves deep into the definition of a Guru and his/her role in moulding and influencing the disciples to get the best out of them in every walk of life – something all GenNext teachers must take note of.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive view of the evolution of dancing in India is one that is derived from Sanskrit textual sources. These texts are the basic material that students of the dance in India must examine in order to uncover its past. Since the rebirth of informed interest in dancing in early twentieth century, its antiquity has been acknowledged but precisely what the art was in antiquity remains unclear. Discovering the oldest forms of dancing in India requires, as do other historical quests, a reconstruction of the past and, again as in other historical investigations, the primary sources of knowledge are records from the past. In this case the records are treatises and manuals in Sanskrit that discuss and describe dancing. These are the sources that the present work sets out to mine. These texts taken collectively are more than records of a particular state of the art. They testify to the growth of the theory and practice of the art and thus establish it as an evolving rather than a fixed art form that changed as much in response to its own expanding aesthetic boundaries as to parallel or complementary forms of dance, drama and music that impinged upon it as India's social and political situation changed. When we place the Sanskrit treatises in chronological sequence it becomes clear that the understanding of the art has changed through time, in its infancy as well as in maturer periods.

Book excerpt: "A Little Book of Noises gathers together sounds from the cosmos, the natural world, the human world, and the invented world, as well as containing pockets of silence. From the vast sound of sand in the desert to the tuneful warble of a songbird, from the meditative resonance of a temple bell to the improvisational melodies of jazz, this is a celebration of all things "auraculous," or "ear marvelous." Sound shapes our world in invisible but significant ways, and writer Caspar Henderson brings his characteristic curiosity and knowledge to the subject to take us on an exhilarating journey to examine noise related to humans (anthropophony), other life (biophony), our planet (geophony), and space (cosmophony)"--

Book excerpt: Meeting Shiva is a spiritual memoir. Tiziana, a single woman in her mid-thirties, is at the end of an adventurous overland trip through the Himalayas, which she embarked on to search for her tantric soul mate. When the soul mate hasn’t materialized after eight months of wandering through Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan and India, she decides to go home. Before her departure, she sets out on a final mountain trip. It is here that she meets Rudra, the man she has been waiting for all her life. But there is a catch: Rudra is a sannyasi, a celibate Hindu monk who lives in an austere ashram in the remote Himalayas. The two get drawn into an intense, romantic relationship that soon spirals out of control as Tiziana is drawn into a past long forgotten that ultimately leads her through pain and misery to healing and transformation. ,
