Book excerpt: With its unparalleled coverage of English slang of all types (from 18th-century cant to contemporary gay slang), and its uncluttered editorial apparatus, Cassell's Dictionary of Slang was warmly received when its first edition appeared in 1998. 'Brilliant.' said Mark Lawson on BBC2's The Late Review; 'This is a terrific piece of work - learned, entertaining, funny, stimulating' said Jonathan Meades in The Evening Standard. But now the world's best single-volume dictionary of English slang is about to get even better. Jonathon Green has spent the last seven years on a vast project: to research in depth the English slang vocabulary and to hunt down and record written instances of the use of as many slang words as possible. This has entailed trawling through more than 4000 books - plus song lyrics, TV and movie scripts, and many newspapers and magazines - for relevant material. The research has thrown up some fascinating results
Book Synopsis Country Editor's Boy by : Hal Borland
Download or read book Country Editor's Boy written by Hal Borland and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir of youthful years spent in Colorado as the American West was transformed, by the author of High, Wide, and Lonesome and The Dog Who Came to Stay. Country Editor’s Boy picks up where Hal Borland’s classic memoir High, Wide and Lonesome left off: with Borland, on the cusp of adulthood in the early twentieth century, making his way in an eastern Colorado town that still retained all the flavors of the Old West. Borland’s father, the editor of a local weekly newspaper, was working to help his publication transition along with the town around him. At the same time, young Hal was experiencing dramatic social and economic change in his own way. In a matter of a decade, Borland’s Colorado town shifted from a frontier outpost to part of a rapidly urbanizing new America. This memoir shows a boy entering adulthood as the world around him comes of age. Evocative and wholly engrossing, Country Editor’s Boy is a vividly drawn portrait of western life, by one of the greatest naturalist writers of his age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An escaped lunatic murders two prostitutes at Lovland Lodge. Delilah and Annabelle have inherited the raggedy old lodge, and business is dead. They don't have the money for repairs, much less for the balloon payment, soon due, to pay off their fat mortgage. They face foreclosure. The recession has cost Sam his job. His two fishing buddies, wounded in Iraq, try to convince him he should start a bed and breakfast. He says they're crazy. When the lodge becomes Samson and Delilah's Haunted Bed and Breakfast, its new name pulls in gobs of guests. The weird lights and noises at night give fun to everybody, believers and skeptics alike, even if they're not too sure of what's going on. They all pitch in to help solve the mystery. A more realistic problem smacks them: Annabelle's dirty rotten ex-husband, Percy. She has kicked him out and filed for divorce, but he keeps trying to steal the property. He kidnaps her and piles a $100,000 ransom on top of the $280,000 mortgage payment.
