An insightful new text by art critic Chris Wiley accompanies color images of Wood and Kusaka at their shared studio on Blackwelder Street in Los Angeles, where they work alongside one another to create works that draw from personal memory and their shared existence as a married couple. Book excerpt: This elegant monograph marks Shio Kusaka's first solo exhibition with Gagosian and her first exhibition in Italy. Shio Kusaka's ceramic work often incorporates playful details and subject matter, from basketballs and fruit to dinosaurs, raindrops, and wood grain. However, in this new body of work, she further explores her geometric abstractions, offering a more direct view of her technical mastery as she adheres to a single-process approach to study the possibility of endless permutations. In previous abstract works, Kusaka often ended a line or grid pattern once it became distorted by the curvature of the pot, producing fragmented, interlocking patterns that appear as overlapping drawings, contradicting the three-dimensional volume. In these new works, however, she takes an almost topographic approach by carving, painting, and even drawing with pencil intricate lines along the surfaces of each pot, allowing the shape of each vessel to dictate the curves of the lines.

Book excerpt: Shio Kusaka’s ceramic vessels articulate poetic connections, creating a cohesive and unique installation. “It’s a striking effect—some pieces are bowl-shaped, others are cylindrical, a few have slim, sloping necks. Their linear arrangement suggests some kind of progression through time and space.” —Document Journal While pulling inspiration and techniques from ancient Japanese ceramics as well as from popular culture and everyday life, Kusaka carves new language into her artwork. Employing various types of clay and firing methods, she experiments with line, color, and size to bring fresh life to the medium. This harmonious presentation is created from individual pieces and thematic groupings—similar in their materiality, hue, and display—resulting in an extraordinary, unified installation to be experienced in the round. With many detail images, this book provides a deep dive into Kusaka’s incredible work one light year. Published after Kusaka’s hugely successful exhibition at David Zwirner, New York, in 2022, this catalogue studies her singular installation from all angles. The acclaimed poet Adrienne Raphel writes an accompanying text discussing Kusaka’s world-building approach and offering her own associations with the artist’s work.

Book excerpt: Featuring studio shots and a new interview between Jonas Wood and Tamarind master printer Ed Hamilton, Jonas Wood: Prints 2 provides an insightful view of the acclaimed artist’s collaborative printmaking process. Following the 2018 release of Jonas Wood: Prints, Jonas Wood: Prints 2 documents Jonas Wood’s dynamic printmaking output from 2018 to 2022 and reproduces more than thirty limited-edition prints created during this period. The selection of prints showcases some of Wood’s most familiar subjects: domestic interiors, sports imagery, botany, and still lifes inspired by his wife Shio Kusaka’s ceramic pieces. From verdant moonlit gardens to peaceful living spaces, Wood depicts everyday scenes and objects with a striking vibrancy born out of collaboration with expert printmakers. In accordance with Wood’s personal emphasis on artistic collaboration, the catalog is organized into sections representing various printshops he has worked with—including Cirrus Gallery and Cirrus Editions Ltd., Counter Editions, Hamilton Press, Mixografia, Pace Editions Inc., and WKS Editions. The catalog also includes photography of Wood’s prints in progress and a conversation between Wood and master printer Ed Hamilton in which they discuss the evolution of printing practices and Wood’s creative influences. Jonas Wood (b. 1977, Boston) lives and works in Los Angeles. He is known for his boldly colored paintings, drawings, and prints that combine art historical references with images of the objects, people, and spaces that comprise the fabric of his life. In 2016, he was commissioned to create an expansive mural, Still Life with Two Owls, for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. His work is held in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.

Book excerpt: Although Kusaka and Wood work independently, their mutual influences are palpable. This is hardly surprising: they not only live together but also share a single studio. Their art is as intertwined as their lives.0Kusaka?s work consists of elegant pots and vases in all shapes and sizes. It reflects diverse influences: traditional Japanese techniques, for instance, but also the geometrical patterns of contemporary artists such as Agnes Martin. Wood?s paintings of plants and interiors blur the lines between figurative and abstract art. The recognizable, distorted perspectives in his plant still lifes and portraits testify to influences from areas of art history as distinct as cubism, pop art, and artists such as David Hockney.0The mutual influences are immediately apparent in Wood?s paintings of Kusaka?s pots and objects, which in turn borrow patterns from his work such as elements of sport and everyday shapes. What we see is a constant visual dance and an ever-evolving interaction between subject and object, between observer and observed. When we look a little further, we also see a mutual fascination with geometry on the one hand and imperfection on the other. While Wood?s perspectives are always slightly askew and his shapes two-dimensional, her pots and vases are seldom symmetrical or entirely round.00Exhibition: Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar, The Netherlands (30.09.2017-07.01.2018).

Book excerpt: Since 2007, Los Angeles artist Jonas Wood (born 1977) has been sketching Greek, Oceanic and African vessels at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. His relationship with the Met began as a child accompanying his sisters and parents, and when he began to make regular visits to New York from L.A. in 2007, he resumed his relationship with the museum, acquiring the habit of sketching the Met's ceramic holdings using a ballpoint pen on hotel stationary. Following each of these visits, Wood then created large-scale versions of the drawings in his studio back in L.A., reworking them in charcoal or pencil on paper. A History of the Metis the first installment in the artist's multi-volume homage to the Met, a project that accords with his well-known visual diary style and his fondness for portraying objects and places related to friends and family.

Book excerpt: Alone Street brings together two major bodies of work by Gregory Crewdson, Cathedral of the Pines (Aperture, 2016) and An Eclipse of Moths (Aperture, 2020), in a single, elegant, and affordable monograph. Both series expand on the artist's obsessive exploration of the psychogeography of small-town, post-industrial New England and underscore the precision and depth of Crewdson's unique mode of photographic storytelling. In each image, light, color, and carefully crafted scenography evoke the feeling that, as art historian Alexander Nemerov has astutely described, "all that ever happened in these places seems crystallized in his tableaux, as if the quiet melancholy of Crewdson's scenes gathered the unruly sorrows and other little-guessed feelings of people long-gone who once stood on those spots." In addition to the full set of images from each series, Alone Street, presents a selection of behind-the-scenes images and storyboards, revealing the extensive preparation and planning that went into the making of each work.

Wood renders these interiors with a disorientating combination of scrupulous exactitude and absolute flatness. Interiors offers a kind of self-portrait of the artist, exploring the arrangement of his living and work quarters and his various possessions as they recur throughout the book.

Book excerpt: Frimkess' sculptural ceramics draw from an eclectic repertoire of cartoons and masterworks This book presents the work of Venezuelan artist Magdalena Suarez Frimkess (born 1929) and features a selection of her works from the '70s to the present, including utilitarian objects, decorative figures and tiles. Her pieces are imbued with an equal sense of humor and dread. Their fragility and precarity increase the expressive power of these funny, outrageous, grotesque objects, which often seem as though they might collapse before our eyes at any moment. In her studio, one is likely to encounter figurines inspired by Japanese horses or vintage American cartoons; vases ornamented with patterns from the ancient Americas; and tiles, plates and cups decorated with flowers or scenes from her life in Venice. A trio of characters recur throughout her oeuvre: a distressed Olive Oyl, an oblivious Minnie Mouse and the savvy Condorito--a Chilean cartoon from the '50s that is still very popular in Latin America. Frimkess affirms the wisdom of these cartoons; in her eyes, they are philosophers.

Book excerpt: Though Los Angeles artist Ken Price (1935-2012) is best known as a sculptor in ceramic, drawing was always a central component of his art: "For me drawing is really flexible," he once stated, "and I use it in different ways. It's my way of developing ideas." Ken Price: Drawings brings out this facet of Price's work fully for the first time. Featuring 78 of Price's works on paper--all reproduced for the first time, many at actual size--this book is the most comprehensive ever published on the subject. Technical innovations like five-color printing capture Price's drawings in all their wayward vitality. From preparatory works, like Price's early 1960s drawings exploring forms and colors for his abstract sculptures, to his 2000s landscapes featuring wild scenes of erupting volcanoes, cyclonic skies and turbulent seas, Ken Price: Drawings offers a long-overdue survey of Price's work on paper.

Book excerpt: Khalik Allah is a New York–based photographer and filmmaker whose work has been described as "street opera," simultaneously penetrative, hauntingly beautiful, and visceral. His photography has been acclaimed by the New York Times, TIME Light Box, the New Yorker, the Guardian, the Village Voice, the BBC, and the Boston Globe. Since 2012, Allah has been photographing people who frequent the corner of 125th Street and Lexington Avenue in Harlem. Shooting film at night with only the light pouring from storefront windows, street lights, cars, and flashing ambulances, he captures raw and intimate portraits of "souls against the concrete." This volume presents a gallery of 105 portraits created with a Nikon F2 35mm camera and a photography predicated on reality. Inviting viewers to look deeply into the faces of people living amid poverty, drug addiction, and police brutality, but also leading everyday lives, Allah seeks to dispel fears, capture human dignity, and bring clarity to a world that outsiders rarely visit. This nuanced portrayal of nocturnal urban life offers a powerful and rare glimpse into the enduring spirit of a slowly gentrifying Harlem street corner and the great legacies of black history that live there.

Book excerpt: Contemporary painter Jonas Wood's exuberantly colorful portraits: an uncanny blend of realism and abstraction The latest book from Los Angeles-based artist Jonas Wood (born 1977) follows the style of his previous publications Sports Book and Interiors, this time taking up the subject of portraiture. Portraits compiles the many works completed over Wood's career, done in a variety of media, and with a range of subjects and sitters, including paintings of artist friends, self-portraits, intimate familial moments in domestic interiors and the artist's own cultural and sports heroes, from basketball players and boxers to Philip Guston and Pablo Picasso--though Wood's esteem for these figures is beside the point, as he notes: "I don't depict only those athletes who have meaning for me. Sometimes it is about the images being interesting, or that I like the color of the card, and sometimes it is about loving the athlete." Wood's subjects are presented in bright light with lively color, graphic flatness and minute detail rendered impeccably. Jonas Woods: Portraits reveals an intimate look at the life of an artist at the forefront of contemporary painting.
