Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As world competitiveness sharpens, more industries are using shiftwork. This set of short pages from the most recent international symposium on shiftwork brings together review papers on a number of the world's leading shiftwork researchers. Health problems must concern both shiftworkers and their managers, and a series of papers report new findings on coronary risk factors and cardiovascular diseases, general health complaints, sleep and the effect of poor sleep in performance. Should women work night shifts? There is a series of contributions on women and nightwork, a topic that has grown into controversy in a number of countries in recent years. Recent research has highlighted the role of bright light in influencing human adaptability to unusual working hours, and some recent work on this is reported. There are also many contributions covering other topics concerned with shiftwork such as the adoption of condensed working hours and the standardization of questionnaires used in epidemiological studies.

Book Synopsis Night Noise Guidelines for Europe by : Charlotte Hurtley
Download or read book Night Noise Guidelines for Europe written by Charlotte Hurtley and published by WHO Regional Office Europe. This book was released on 2009 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WHO Regional Office for Europe set up a working group of experts to provide scientific advice to the Member States for the development of future legislation and policy action in the area of assessment and control of night noise exposure. The working group reviewed available scientific evidence on the health effects of night noise, and derived health-based guideline values. In December 2006, the working group and stakeholders from industry, government and nongovernmental organizations reviewed and reached general agreement on the guideline values and key texts for the final document of the "Night noise guidelines for Europe". Considering the scientific evidence on the thresholds of night noise exposure indicated by "Lnight, outside" [L suffix night, outside] as defined in the Environmental Noise Directive (2002/49/EC), an Lnight, outside of 40 dB should be the target of the night noise guideline (NNG) to protect the public, including the most vulnerable groups such as children, the chronically ill and the elderly. "Lnight, outside" value of 55 dB is recommended as an interim target for the countries where the NNG cannot be achieved in the short term for various reasons, and where policy-makers choose to adopt a stepwise approach. These guidelines are applicable to the Member States of the European Region, and may be considered as an extension to, as well as an update of, the previous WHO "Guidelines for community noise" (1999). Book Synopsis Alberta Oil and the Decline of Democracy in Canada by : Lorna Stefanick
Download or read book Alberta Oil and the Decline of Democracy in Canada written by Lorna Stefanick and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to May 2015, the oil-rich jurisdiction of Alberta had, for over four decades, been a one-party state. During that time, the rule of the Progressive Conservatives essentially went unchallenged, with critiques of government policy falling on deaf ears and Alberta ranking behind other provinces in voter turnout. Given the province's economic reliance on oil revenues, a symbiotic relationship also developed between government and the oil industry. Cross-national studies have detected a correlation between oil-dependent economies and authoritarian rule, a pattern particularly evident in Africa and the Middle East. Alberta Oil and the Decline of Democracy in Canada sets out to test the "oil inhibits democracy" hypothesis in the context of an industrialized nation in the Global North. In probing the impact of Alberta's powerful oil lobby on the health of democracy in the province, contributors to the volume engage with an ongoing discussion of the erosion of political liberalism in the West. In addition to examining energy policy and issues of government accountability in Alberta, they explore the ramifications of oil dependence in areas such as Aboriginal rights, environmental policy, labour law, women's equity, urban social policy, and the arts. If, as they argue, reliance on oil has weakened democratic structures in Alberta, then what of Canada as whole, where the short-term priorities of the oil industry continue to shape federal policy? The findings in this book suggest that, to revitalize democracy, provincial and federal leaders alike must find the courage to curb the influence of the oil industry on governance.
Book Synopsis Non-visual Effects of Light and Colour by : Rikard Küller
Download or read book Non-visual Effects of Light and Colour written by Rikard Küller and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Solar radiation has a profound effect on the human organism. This effect might be transformed by artificial illumination. The aim of this bibliography is to bring together in a comprehensive form the existing knowledge regarding the normal physiological and psychological effects of light and colour, including the following topics: Effects of solar radiation on the skin; physiological effects of daylight and artificial illumination entering the eye; preferences for light, colour and visual patterns ; the impact of culture and personality; light and colour in the built environment. Amongst others, the review indicates artificial light might cause stress-like reactions, if it is intense, if the spectrum considerably deviates from that of natural daylight, or if it is flickering and glaring." The bibliography was compiled at the Environmental Psychology Unit, Lund Institute of Technology, with financial support from the Swedish Council for Building Research. It constitutes a CIE TC 3.5 sub-committee report. (240 pages, 1.700 references).
Book Synopsis The Circadian Clock by : Urs Albrecht
Download or read book The Circadian Clock written by Urs Albrecht and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-23 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the invitation to edit this volume, I wanted to take the opportunity to assemble reviews on different aspects of circadian clocks and rhythms. Although most c- tributions in this volume focus on mammalian circadian clocks, the historical int- duction and comparative clocks section illustrate the importance of various other organisms in deciphering the mechanisms and principles of circadian biology. Circadian rhythms have been studied for centuries, but only recently, a mole- lar understanding of this process has emerged. This has taken research on circadian clocks from mystic phenomenology to a mechanistic level; chains of molecular events can describe phenomena with remarkable accuracy. Nevertheless, current models of the functioning of circadian clocks are still rudimentary. This is not due to the faultiness of discovered mechanisms, but due to the lack of undiscovered processes involved in contributing to circadian rhythmicity. We know for example, that the general circadian mechanism is not regulated equally in all tissues of m- mals. Hence, a lot still needs to be discovered to get a full understanding of cir- dian rhythms at the systems level. In this respect, technology has advanced at high speed in the last years and provided us with data illustrating the sheer complexity of regulation of physiological processes in organisms. To handle this information, computer aided integration of the results is of utmost importance in order to d- cover novel concepts that ultimately need to be tested experimentally.
