Book excerpt: Melati escaped New Jakarta space station when it fell into Allion's hands. Her family was left behind the enemy lines. She signed up for active duty with the International Space Force in the hope they would liberate the station. Instead, they chose to maintain a crippling siege that has lasted for ten months. A small ship escapes from the station with on board a single male occupant whose mind appears to have been wiped. With her skills in artificial mindbases, Melati is part of the team that tries to get information out of him. He could be a human Trojan horse sent by Allion and his calls for help nothing more than a trap to get ISF to send people to the station. Or he could be a genuine escapee from the station where the recycling processes have collapsed and ten thousand civilians have mere weeks until they die of asphyxiation. Either way, the time for watching and waiting is over. War is about to begin. Science fiction, military science fiction, space opera,

Book excerpt: Sound for Moving Pictures presents a new and original sound design theory called the Four Sound Areas framework, offering a conceptual template for constructing, deconstructing and communicating all types of motion picture soundtracks; and a way for academics and practitioners to better understand and utilize the deeper, emotive capabilities available to all filmmakers through the thoughtful use of sound design. The Four Sound Areas framework presents a novel approach to sound design that enables the reader to more fully appreciate audience emotions and audience engagement, and provides a flexible, practical model that will allow professionals to more easily create and communicate soundtracks with greater emotional significance and meaning. Of obvious benefit to sound specialists, as well as motion picture professionals such as film producers, directors and picture editors, Sound for Moving Pictures also provides valuable insight for others interested in the subject; such as those involved with teaching soundtrack analysis, or those researching the wider topics of film studies and screen writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infinity is paradoxical in many ways. Some paradoxes involve deterministic supertasks, such as Thomson's Lamp, where a switch is toggled an infinite number of times over a finite period of time, or the Grim Reaper, where it seems that infinitely many reapers can produce a result without doing anything. Others involve infinite lotteries. If you get two tickets from an infinite fair lottery where tickets are numbered from 1, no matter what number you saw on the first ticket, it is almost certain that the other ticket has a bigger number on it. And others center on paradoxical results in decision theory, such as the surprising observation that if you perform a sequence of fair coin flips that goes infinitely far back into the past but only finitely into the future, you can leverage information about past coin flips to predict future ones with only finitely many mistakes. Alexander R. Pruss examines this seemingly large family of paradoxes in Infinity, Causation and Paradox. He establishes that these paradoxes and numerous others all have a common structure: their most natural embodiment involves an infinite number of items causally impinging on a single output. These paradoxes, he argues, can all be resolved by embracing 'causal finitism', the view that it is impossible for a single output to have an infinite causal history. Throughout the book, Pruss exposits such paradoxes, defends causal finitism at length, and considers connections with the philosophy of physics (where causal finitism favors but does not require discretist theories of space and time) and the philosophy of religion (with a cosmological argument for a first cause).

Book excerpt: In the face of resource depletion, environmental changes, lifestyle changes, demographic and digital adaptation, old ideologies of city building and expensive and complex automobility solutions are in freefall. These changes are creating severe friction between the old and new paradigms. This book provides new perspectives through the process of ideological disassociation and concepts of human mobility code. The basic premise of the book, human mobility is an essential component of our creativity that comes from our unconscious desire to become a part of a community. Several new concepts in the book starts with the hallmark of new discovery of human mobility code and its implications of urban mobility boundary systems to stay within safe planetary zone. A new discovery of human mobility code from comprehensive research finding prove that each individual develops a unique mobility footprint and become our mobility identity. Beyond individual hallmarks, human develops collective mobility codes through interaction with the third space on which entire mobility systems lie and are created by the fundamentals of city planning and the design process. Readers are introduced to an innovative mobility planning process and reinvention of multimodal mobility approaches based on new mobility code while formulating new concepts, practical solutions and implementation techniques, tools, policies, and processes to reinforce low-carbon mobility options while addressing social equity, environmental, and health benefits. Finally, the book arms us with knowledge to prevent the disaster of full technological enlightenment against our natural human mobility code.

The main concepts presented are invertibility at infinity (closely related to Fredholmness), limit operators, and the stability and convergence of finite matrix approximations. Concrete examples are used to illustrate the results throughout, including discrete Schrödinger operators and integral and boundary integral operators arising in mathematical physics and engineering.

Book excerpt: Infinity's Flower The Tale of 2012 & the Great Shift of the Ages The year is 2011. David and Kelly are soul mates, who share an awareness of the ancient esoteric wisdom, confirmed by quantum science, that the universe is alive, and everything in it, including us, consists of pulsating, luminous energy. Like shamans from indigenous cultures around the world, David and Kelly have powers far exceeding those of ordinary humans as a function of their awareness that this world of energy is guided by an unseen intelligence or spirit, and their ability to merge with these mysterious forces. One of their powers is the ability to see through the illusion of everyday life, and into another dimension, where malevolent extraterrestrial beings, masquerading as humans, have covertly ruled the world for thousands of years, and have imposed a fascist world government, or New World Order, upon a human race. Infinity's Flower is the epic story of the age-old intergalactic battle between the forces of good and evil that is coming to a head on the planet Earth at this time, and David and Kelly's struggle to join the forces of light, both in this world and in higher, etheric dimensions, to defeat the powers of darkness, and reclaim the planet. The backdrop of this tale is The Great Shift of the Ages, an exceedingly rare geophysical and astrophysical time the Earth has entered. It is the completion of a 26,000-year cycle, which was prophesized by ancient cultures spanning the globe, including the Egyptians, the Mayans and the Hopis. The Shift involves forces of colossal magnitude, such as the reversing of the Earth's electromagnetic field, which will change the face of the planet, and life on it, forever. The clock is ticking. The year 2012 appears to be the turning point. Are these the end-times, as so many believe was predicted in the Bible, or is this an opportunity for the birth of a new era of higher consciousness and spirituality? Infinity's Flower weaves the epic scope of Orwell, the esoteric wisdom of Castaneda, and the riveting storytelling of the film sensation The Matrix, into a tale of this rare and blessed opportunity for humanity to evict the forces of evil, and make the shift to the new paradigm. It is a world in which doors swing open to unimaginable forces, and where humanity reconnects with the one true source of its power: the divine spirit of a living universe. Infinity's Flower is a vision of the paradise that an empowered and an enlightened humanity can, and must, create on Earth.

Several practical examples of modern computer-aided lens design are worked out in detail from start to finish. The basic theory and results of optics are presented early on in the book, along with a discussion of optical materials. Aberrations, and their correction, and image analysis are then covered in great detail. Subsequent chapters deal with design optimisation and tolerance analysis. Several design examples are then given, beginning with basic lens design forms, and progressing to advanced systems, such as gradient index and diffractive optical components. In covering all aspects of optical design, including the use of modern lens design software, this book will be invaluable to students of optical engineering as well as to anyone engaged in optical design at any stage.

The book is an introduction to the computer-aided design of communication networks, based on a firm analytic foundation of circuit theory and numerical techniques. It provides design procedures and techniques of filters, broadband matching networks, compatible impedances, high-frequency amplifiers, diplexers and multiplexers. All programs are written in FORTRAN 77 and run by MS-FORTRAN 5.1 and WATFIV compilers on personal computers. A special feature of the book is that it bridges the gap between theory and practice, and algorithms and implementations. The level of the book is suitable for a senior elective or a circuit design course for the first-year graduate students as well as a reference book for practicing engineers.
