From cases involving a strange group for red-headed men to a missing thumb, Holmes uses his powers of observation and deduction to solve even the weirdest mysteries. This unabridged collection of the stories is taken from the book form, originally published in 1892.

Book excerpt: “The immense talent, passion and literary brilliance that Conan Doyle brought to his work gives him a unique place in English letters.”-Stephen Fry ”Doyle’s modesty of language conceals a profound tolerance of the human complexity”-John Le Carré ”Holmes has a timeless talent, passion and literary brilliance that puts him heads, shoulders and deerstalker above all other detectives.”- Alexander McCall Smith Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is the quintessential collection of some of the most thrilling exploits of Detective Holmes and Dr. Watson. These eleven stories of literature’s greatest and most popular detective demonstrate Sherlock Holmes’s astounding power of deduction on full display. The stories in this treasured volume were initially published in serial form in The Strand magazine from December 1892 until December 1893, then in book form in late 1893. Set in the foggy moors of England and in the dark alleyways of Victorian London, this classic collection includes some of the best detective yarns ever written. Among the most popular tales within The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes are “Silver Blaze”, infamous for the “curious incident of the dog in the night-time”, and it’s setting in the late-Victorian sporting world; the controversial tale “The Adventure of the Cardboard Box”, originally deemed too inappropriate for publication in the original edition. Of all of the stories in the collection “The Final Problem” is the most notorious; Doyle had made the decision to stop writing about the character of Sherlock Holmes and within this legendary short story, killed off the character of Sherlock Holmes. This resulting outcry of the public was unlike anything else in literary history. Other stories include; “The Adventure of the Yellow Face”, “The Adventure of the Stockbroker’s Clerk”, “The Adventure of the Gloria Scott”, The Adventure of the Mugrave Ritual”, “The Adventure of the Reigate Squire”, “The Adventure of the Crooked Man”, “The Adventure of the Resident Patient”, “The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter”, and “The Adventure of the Navel Treaty”.As this brilliant collection demonstrates, Sherlock Holmes is one of the most engaging literary companions any reader could hope for. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is both modern and readable.

Book excerpt: Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904) overturned the dramatic conventions of his day and laid the groundwork for contemporary approaches to directing and acting. Now, for the first time, the full lyricism, humor, and pathos of his greatest plays are available to an English-speaking audience. Marina Brodskaya's new translations of Ivanov, The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard not only surpass in accuracy all previous translations, but also provide the first complete English text of the plays, restoring passages entirely omitted by her predecessors. This much-needed volume renders Chekhov in language that will move readers and theater audiences alike, making accessible his wordplay, unstated implications, and innovations. His characters' vulnerabilities, needs, and neuroses—their humanity—emerge through their genuine, self-absorbed conversations. The plays come to life as never before and will surprise readers with their vivacity, originality, and relevance.

Their struggle, seemingly to the death, was to leave many readers desolate at the loss of Holmes, but was also to lead to his immortality as a literary figure.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson have once again taken up some of the most intriguing cases. A collection of eleven short stories, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes introduces Mycroft, Holmes’ elder brother, in ‘The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter,’ and Professor James Moriarty, the criminal mastermind and Holmes’ archenemy, in ‘The Adventure of the Final Problem.’ The stories continue to thrill their readers. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes are a collection of twelve short stories published in The Strand as further episodes of the Adventures between December 1892 and December 1893 with original illustrations by Sidney Paget. They were first published as a collection in 1894. They include one of the most famous Sherlock Holmes stories, "The Adventure of the Final Problem", in which Doyle "killed" Holmes. Several of the stories are told in a way which is more from Holmes' own point of view, as he tells Watson some of the early work that he did before meeting the doctor. · "The Adventure of the Silver Blaze" · "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box" [note 1] · "The Adventure of the Yellow Face" · "The Adventure of the Stock-Broker's Clerk" · "The Adventure of the Gloria Scott" (Holmes's first case, described to Watson) · "The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual" (another early case, told by Holmes to Watson) · "The Adventure of the Reigate Puzzle" · "The Adventure of the Crooked Man" · "The Adventure of the Resident Patient" · "The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter" (Mycroft appears for the first time) · "The Adventure of the Naval Treaty" · "The Adventure of the Final Problem" (Watson reports the death of Holmes) About the Author: Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh into a prosperous Irish family. He trained as a doctor, gaining his degree from Edinburgh University in 1881. He worked as a surgeon on a whaling boat and also as a medical officer on a steamer travelling between Liverpool and West Africa. He then settled in Portsmouth on the English south coast and divided his time between medicine and writing. Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in 'A Study of Scarlet', published in 'Beeton's Christmas Annual' in 1887. Its success encouraged Conan Doyle to write more stories involving Holmes but, in 1893, Conan Doyle killed off Holmes, hoping to concentrate on more serious writing. A public outcry later made him resurrect Holmes. In addition, Conan Doyle wrote a number of other novels, including 'The Lost World' and various non-fictional works. These included a pamphlet justifying Britain's involvement in the Boer War, for which he was knighted and histories of the Boer War and World War One, in which his son, brother and two of his nephews were killed. Conan Doyle also twice ran unsuccessfully for parliament. In later life he became very interested in spiritualism.

Worldwide literature classic, among top 100 literary novels of all time. A must read for everybody. In the 1980s, Italo Calvino (the most-translated contemporary Italian writer at the time of his death) said in his essay "Why Read the Classics?" that "a classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say", without any doubt this book can be considered a Classic This book is also a Bestseller because as Steinberg defined: "a bestseller as a book for which demand, within a short time of that book's initial publication, vastly exceeds what is then considered to be big sales".
