Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sherbro and the Sherbros: Or a Native African's Account of His Country and People Daniel flickinger wilberforce was born on Sherbro Island, near the mainland, on the west coast of Africa, February 24, 1857, and is therefore now twenty-nine years of age. His parents had been converted to Christianity before he was born, so that he is not, and never has been anything approximating a heathen. His parents, after their conversion, took the name of the great English philanthropist. Rev. D. K. Flickinger (now bishop of the United Brethren in Christ) was then laboring as a missionary in Africa, and the parents named their boy for this man of God. Late in the year of 1871, Mr. Wilberforce found his way to New York in com pany with a returning missionary; and shortly after, Mr. Fli'ckinger, by the advice of the Missionary Board, brought young Daniel to Dayton, Ohio, where he was at once placed in the public schools. He passed through the several grades of the District, Intermediate, and High school, and took one year of special studies in Union Biblical Seminary, in seven years. When Mr. Wilber force graduated from the High School, he received one of the three diplomas of special honor. His personal bearing, thrilling graduating address, and high standing in his class drew from his many friends and the immense audience present most emphatic outbursts of applause. After selecting a Christian lady of Dayton for a life companion, Miss Lizzie Harris, to whom he was married October 17, 1878, Mr. Wilberforce sailed for his native land under the auspices of the United Brethren Missionary Society, in the autumn of 1878. Fleeing his owner, Kizell served with the British military in the Revolutionary War, began a family in the Nova Scotian wilderness, then returned to his African homeland to help found a settlement for freed slaves in Sierra Leone. He spent decades battling European and African slave traders along the coast and urging his people to stop selling their own into foreign bondage. This in-depth biography—based in part on Kizell's own writings—illuminates the links between South Carolina and West Africa during the Atlantic slave trade's peak decades. Seized in an attack on his uncle's village, Kizell was thrown into the brutal world of chattel slavery at age thirteen and transported to Charleston, South Carolina. When Charleston fell to the British in 1780, Kizell joined them and was with the Loyalist force defeated in the pivotal battle of Kings Mountain. At the war's end, he was evacuated with other American Loyalists to Nova Scotia. In 1792 he joined a pilgrimage of nearly twelve hundred former slaves to the new British settlement for free blacks in Sierra Leone. Among the most prominent Africans in the antislavery movement of his time, Kizell believed that all people of African descent in America would, if given a way, return to Africa as he had. Back in his native land, he bravely confronted the forces that had led to his enslavement. It entails the history of Sierra Leone from its days as a slave harbor through to its founding as a home for free slaves, and toward its political independence and civil war. In 1462, the country was discovered by a Portuguese explorer, Pedro de Sintra, who named it Serra Lyoa (Lion Mountains). Sierra Leone later became a lucrative hub for the Transatlantic Slave Trade. At the end of slavery in England, Freetown was selected as a home for the Black Poor, free slaves in England after the Somerset ruling. The Black Poor were joined by the Nova Scotians, American slaves who supported or fought with the British during the American Revolution. The Maroons, rebellious slaves from Jamaica, arrived in 1800. The Recaptives, freed in enforcement of British antislavery laws, were also taken to Freetown. Freetown became a British colony in 1808 and Sierra Leone obtained political independence from Britain in 1961. The development of the country was derailed by the death of its first Prime Minister, Sir Milton Margai, and thirty years after independence the country collapsed into a brutal civil war.

The im/mobility of a social or cultural group has major impact on how identity narratives, a sense of belonging and relationships to ‘others’ are shaped, and vice versa. In 1999, with the help of two cousins, she founded the Caulker Descendants Association, US. Annual reunions are now held where members meet new aunts, uncles, and cousins, learn about family history, try to learn the tribal language (Sherbro) and just have fun as a family. Since her retirement in 2003, she has gone home to Sierra Leone annually to oversee the work of her Community Development Organization - Lesana, which is working on development and rehabilitation of her father's birth place, Mambo Town, Mambo Section, Kagboro Chiefdom, Moyamba District.
