Book excerpt: Sheldon Leonard Wight was born in 1847 at Lawrence, Lorain County, Ohio. His parents were Leonard and Parthena Sheldon Wight. The family moved to Eaton County, Michigan between 1857 and 1858. In 1863, Sheldon and his older brother, Francis, enlisted in the Sixth Michigan Cavalry, Company F. The young men began their Civil War service as replacements for soldiers killed during the campaigns of 1862-1863. The two men were in Kilpatrick's raid toward Richmond and in the Battles of the Wilderness, Cedar Creek, Fisher's Hill, Five Forks, and others. They were in the final charges at Appomattox before Lee surrendered. By April 1865, the regiment was camped outside Washington D.C. After the Grand Review, they were shipped west by rail to the Powder River where they built Fort Connor, later renamed Fort Reno. Sheldon's unit wintered at Fort Bridger, Wyoming and marched back to Detroit where they were discharged in June 1866. In November 1866, Sheldon married Mary Ann Weaver in Charlotte, Michigan. The family moved to Gratiot County, eventually helping to establish the village of Sickels. They had five children.

Book Synopsis Michigan Place Names by : Walter Romig
Download or read book Michigan Place Names written by Walter Romig and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Aabec in Antrim County to Zutphen in Ottawa County, from Hell to Hooker, Michigan Place Names is a compendium of information on the origins of the state's geographical names. With alphabetically arranged thumb-nail sketches, Walter Romig introduces readers to a host of colorful personalities and episodes which have achieved notoriety, though sometimes shortlived, by devising or lending their names to the state's settlements. Romig spent more than ten years researching and documenting the entries to which he added an extensive bibliography of sources and an index of the personal names used in the text. For the curious, the librarian, the genealogist, or the historian, his book is an indispensable resource. Michigan Place Names is another "Michigan classic" reissued as a Great Lakes Book.

Book Synopsis World Philology by : Sheldon Pollock
Download or read book World Philology written by Sheldon Pollock and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philology—the discipline of making sense of texts—is enjoying a renaissance within academia after decades of neglect. World Philology charts the evolution of philology across the many cultures and historical time periods in which it has been practiced, and demonstrates how this branch of knowledge, like philosophy and mathematics, is an essential component of human understanding. Every civilization has developed ways of interpreting the texts that it produces, and differences of philological practice are as instructive as the similarities. We owe our idea of a textual edition for example, to the third-century BCE scholars of the Alexandrian Library. Rabbinical philology created an innovation in hermeneutics by shifting focus from how the Bible commands to what it commands. Philologists in Song China and Tokugawa Japan produced startling insights into the nature of linguistic signs. In the early modern period, new kinds of philology arose in Europe but also among Indian, Chinese, and Japanese commentators, Persian editors, and Ottoman educationalists who began to interpret texts in ways that had little historical precedent. They made judgments about the integrity and consistency of texts, decided how to create critical editions, and determined what it actually means to read. Covering a wide range of cultures—Greek, Roman, Hebrew, Arabic, Sanskrit, Chinese, Indo-Persian, Japanese, Ottoman, and modern European—World Philology lays the groundwork for a new scholarly discipline.

Book excerpt: Volume IV: Compiled and revised by Silas Felton. 1063 pp., revised with books missed in vols. I,II, and III, regimental publications, personal narratives, biographies, campaigns and battles, Northern and Southern. Felton?s new compilation is without peer. He covers the subject from five different perspectives: Regimental Publications and Personal Narratives, Union and Confederate Biographies, General References, Armed Forces and Campaigns and Battles. And, making the work extremely useful, the last 236 pages contain a complete Index of Authors of Volumes I through IV as well as a new Index of Titles in the Revised Volume IV.Furthermore, to clear up confusion created by the multiple names often used by Confederate units during the war ? artillery batteries in particular ? which carried a state designation but were commonly known by the battery commander?s name, Felton has cited a written work with a single number designation but indexed and listed it under its common appellation to aid the researcher and eliminate confusion.
