Book excerpt: A #1 bestseller from one of Britain’s most popular novelists. • An all-consuming story revolving around the consequences of a desperate act. • "Nobody writes page-turning women's fiction like Vincenzi." —USA Today Martha, Clio, and Jocasta meet by chance at Heathrow airport in 1985 as they are starting off on separate backpacking adventures, and they decide to spend the first few days of their trips together in Thailand. When they go their separate ways, they vow to get together in London the following year. But many years pass before the three cross paths again, and the once-capricious, carefree girls now all have thriving careers. One of them, however, harbors a terrible secret: On her return from her pre-college excursion, she abandoned her just-born daughter at Heathrow. Clio has fulfilled her ambition of becoming a doctor, only to find herself trapped in a marriage to an arrogant surgeon who belittles her and her professional achievements. Martha is a highly paid corporate lawyer, just embarking on a political career. Dedicated to her job, she has had little time for personal relationships and lives a busy, but lonely life. Jocasta, a tabloid newspaper reporter with an infallible instinct for the big story, is in love with a charming colleague who can’t make the permanent commitment she longs for. The infant abandoned at Heathrow has grown up under the loving care of her adoptive family. Now a beautiful teenager named Kate, she sets out to find her birth mother—a quest that unexpectedly brings the women together and exposes the secret buried so many years before. Impossible to put down, Sheer Abandon is top-notch women’s fiction.

Book excerpt: The English island called Abandon, enshrouded in ancient legend, has been home to warriors as well as enchanting women -- and none more spellbinding than lovely Morwenna Halliwell. Determined to fight when Abandon is offered to the highest bidder, Morwenna confronts the enemy: the Earl of Pentargon, Anthony Hartstone -- or "Lord Heart-of-Stone" as she indignantly calls him. Yet little does Morwenna realize she will soon be forced to marry the forbidding lord who holds her future in his strong hands. Anthony arrogantly dismisses Morwenna and her litany of complaints against him -- all the while drawn to her beauty and courage. But when danger confronts Morwenna, Anthony knows he must call upon all his power to protect the innocent miss he desires. It is up to him to unmask the villain who threatens her, and also to convince his bride that he is not her opponent -- but her most passionate and devoted admirer.

Book excerpt: A century-old mystery—and a desperate battle to survive—unfold in this standalone thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter and Recursion. On Christmas Day in 1893, every man, woman, and child in a remote mining town disappeared, belongings forsaken, meals left to freeze in vacant cabins, and not a single bone found. Now, journalist Abigail Foster and her historian father have set out to explore the long-abandoned town and learn what happened. With them are two backcountry guides—along with a psychic and a paranormal photographer who are there to investigate rumors that the town is haunted. But Abigail and her companions are about to learn that the town’s ghosts are the least of their worries. Twenty miles from civilization, with a blizzard bearing down, they realize they are not alone. The ordeal that follows will test this small team past the breaking point as they battle the elements and human foes alike—and discover that the town’s secrets still have the power to kill. Part journey into old-West history, part nail-biting survival thriller, Abandon is a bloody, darkly surprising tale as only Blake Crouch could deliver.

Book excerpt: In the free church tradition, the pastoral prayer has long assumed an important place in the worship of the congregation. It is expected that the pastor will have a more or less extended prayer pertinent to the day and/or to the run of the service in general. Under the circumstances of normal practice, these would involve awareness of a congregation, or a "flock" for a pastor to tend. After ending a normal pastorate and entering retirement and the far more occasional happenstance of entering a pulpit as a guest, the regular preparation for a worship-leading practice became desirable, personally. As a part of that preparation, most often without entering the leadership of worship, least of all as pastor, the pastoral prayer was prepared. This book collects eleven years worth of pastoral prayers, linked to the preaching text of the day by way of the sermon prepared. As there is no flock as reference point, these are, indeed, "Without A Flock".

Book excerpt: “Maybe it was time to land straight in the middle of the adventure…” Hamish DeLuca has spent most of his life trying to hide the anxiety that appears at the most inopportune times -- including during his first real court case as a new lawyer. Determined to rise above his father’s expectations, Hamish runs away to Boston where his cousin, Luca Valari, is opening a fashionable nightclub in Scollay Square. When he meets his cousin's “right hand man” Reggie, Hamish wonders if his dreams for a more normal life might be at hand. Regina “Reggie” Van Buren, heir to a New Haven fortune, has fled fine china, small talk, and the man her parents expect her to marry. Determined to make a life as the self-sufficient city girl she’s seen in her favorite Jean Arthur and Katharine Hepburn pictures, Reggie runs away to Boston, where she finds an easy secretarial job with the suave Luca Valari. But as she and Hamish work together in Luca’s glittering world, they discover a darker side to the smashing Flamingo nightclub. When a corpse is discovered at the Flamingo, Reggie and Hamish quickly learn there is a vast chasm between the haves and the have-nots in 1937 Boston—and that there’s an underworld that feeds on them both. As Hamish is forced to choose between his conscience and loyalty to his beloved cousin, the unlikely sleuthing duo work to expose a murder before the darkness destroys everything they’ve worked to build.

Book excerpt: The story is about an adventuresome, non-physical being (Link) who rediscovers Earth and the concept of the physical during his explorations of other worlds. He gets fascinated with Earth and makes regular visits to this planet, bringing back much information to his realm, Altura. But because he is formless, he can observe but cannot truly experience what it is to be physical. He wants to have this experience. Over time that desire grows in him and eventually he chooses to trade his non-physical state to become instead human. And so the book starts with Link finding himself under a tree on Earth as he slowly discovers his physical condition. He is stunned by the fact that he cannot easily penetrate the tree and moreso that he cannot consciously access the wider realm of thought and is instead stuck in an individualized body which is seemingly prone to constantly shifting emotions controlled by a pendulum that swings between love and a sense of well-being on the one hand and fear on the other. Dax comes upon Link in this state of self-discovery as he is in the process of learning to move his limbs. Dax is a young 12 year old boy, who is the village favorite. He is very curious and lovable and often wanders out to the forested area beyond the village to rediscover nature. This is where he meets Link (the new human) naked. They engage in conversation and Link unfolds knowledge about creation, different life forms in the universe – physical and non-physical; how physicality came to be and the essential role of death in returning us to the realm of spirit and the possible option of choosing not to return to the turmoil pf the physical existence - all very new and enthralling for Dax, and maybe for the reader. The rest of the book is about Link’s experience and observations of the human condition. He learns about how central greed, competition and dominance is to the human way of being as he outmanoeuvres Wall St. and is asked to leave. He learns about mistrust as he loses another job, because he far outperforms his peers and is considered a freak. He learns about the driving attraction between the genders when he meets Ria. Through his final job as a social worker, he goes on to learn much more about the highs and lows of being human and how best to help those who are more ready to move on to a higher level of being and understanding. He recognizes that all life struggles are a misplaced attempt to connect to something higher and to find the wholeness we have lost when we unknowingly chose identification with form over spirit. We are all on a journey into our wholeness. In all of this, Link has as his grounding, Granma Hale, Dax’s grandmother who is always there to give him a listening ear, learn from his constant unfoldings and facilitate his adjustment to Earth. It was she for instance who brought together some key people in the village to a discussion at her house to build acceptance of this strange boy from another realm who suddenly finds himself here. It was she too who found him his jobs. Toward the end of the book she passes away peacefully enjoying the beautiful sunset, which both herself and Link loved so much and which occurs often in the book. The story ends with a poem which attempts to trigger in us the freedom to experience what we are at our core and create that “LINK.”

They invite educators to live a teaching life of questioning--to imagine classrooms where every established and received bit of wisdom, common sense, orthodoxy, and dogma is open for examination, interrogation, and rethinking. Teaching the Taboo, Second Edition is an insightful guide to effective pedagogy and essential reading for anyone looking to evolve as an educator.
