Book excerpt: Shedding the Veil is a highly original overview of Europe's exploration and discovery beyond her own confines. It tackles the subject via an analysis of maps dating from circa 1434 to 1865, with an emphasis on the period before 1600. The book begins with an appraisal of the peculiar circumstances which led late medieval Europe to pursue long-distance travel, both overland and by sea, introduces cosmographic traditions inherited from classical times, and investigates pre-Columbian excursions into the western ocean. Finally, the great voyages and mappaemundi of the early sixteenth century are described in depth. After 1600 the focus begins to narrow North America and particularly to the colonization of the American Northeast. All maps discussed in detail are illustrated. 40 full-page b/w plates, 25 full-page color plates. Contents:Part One: A World Called Europe:PrecedentsThe World As Known to Medieval EuropeClassical Enlightenment: The Renaissance Before ColumbusPart Two: A New World:The Western Antipodes? The Race to Skirt AmericaTruly a Fourth Part of the GlobePart Three: Early Colonization:The British and FrenchThe DutchPre- and Post- Revolution Readership: General. keywords: “… it is wonderful that a single collector could put together such treasures! The author provides readers with good information in a spritely manner … The Book is physically attractive, and the sixty-five illustrations (40 black and white; 25 color) are good. According to David Jolly in the flyer about the book, it will be sought after by collectors and dealers. In my opinion scholars could learn much from it as well … The book offers a lively text about some very interesting and rare maps.” Meridian “It is based on selected items from the collection of Sidney R Knafel, the quality and depth of which is clearly shown in the book … It is good to see such a well illustrated book, and a work in which the discussions are clear, concise and informative … An unusual feature is the binding of the book which is imitation leather rather than the usual cloth binding. This should ensure its longevity.” The Map Collector “The individual entries not only describe the map, but contain a wealth of information on the historial context of each item. Many obscure but interesting sidelights are given … More than 300 footnotes and an extensive index evidence just how wide-ranging this work is … any collector or dealer will find this a valuable addition to their reference library.” Antique Map Handbook “The many explanatory footnotes will be of interest and help to less expert readers … Mr Knafel, the collector; Mr Suarez the compiler, and the publisher deserve credit for an outstanding production that should please cartomaniacs very much.” Cartomania “This recently published book is probably the best book available on the early maps of the dsicovery period. It also covers some important later maps chiefly relating to New England. The book is destined to be a classic.” Paul Mahoney “In this well produced book, Thomas Suárez illustrates and describes 61 maps and globes in the Sidney R Knafel Collection. The maps were produced between 1472 and 1865, a period which saw considerable developments in exploration, science and map-making … he shows wide knowledge and scholarship.” IMCOS Journal “The book's excellent scholarly commentary on the 61 maps discussed and illustrated sets it apart from the many coffee table publications which have appeared in recent years.” Society for the History of Discoveries “This book provide a very personal, interpretive look at important early map of the Americas … I enjoyed the journey — and know I will return to this book again and again. Mr Suarez has great respect for the maps he describes, both for their cartographic artistry and the intellectual puzzles they present us … This book represents a welcome and unusual linking of private collector, dealer, publisher and exhibitors.” Association of Canadian Map Libraries and Archives “Shedding the Veil is a welcome overview of an extensive private collection for which no catalogue had been published. For individuals interested in the history of cartography, Suárez serves as a knowledgeable guide to these cartographic documents, interpreting them in the light of the historical, political and cultural context in which they were shaped.” Cartographica

Book excerpt: This is a book about life after death as provided to me through journaling and a series of extraordinary events by my wife, Suzette Delashmet Shockley, after her demise. I believe, and Suz (many times she and I call her Sue) as my wife believes, that if only one person can save themselves from the complete overwhelming sorrow and utter grief that comes from the death of a loved one, this whole endeavor is worthwhile. When these events started to happen, I, having not known or even thought about life after someone has passed, was in disbelief myself and turned to find out, research, and listen for answers to really see what was happening. In reading and talking with some people that did believe in life after death, I kept an open mind. As you will see, some of the events are without a doubt in my mind coming from another world. These are definite happenings that not by any common sense are able to happen in the world we live in now. As these activities happened one by one, what was happening made sense to me because as I took it as a continuing series of events, I saw something was really happening that was out of the ordinary. It was in fact very extraordinary and could not, as we know it , be of a human perspective of life on this planet. I now know that when a person loses a good friend, a spouse, a child, or other loving relationship, the deceased person can come through. I believe the stronger the love vibration between the one that has passed and the one left behind, the easier and the stronger will be the connection between them.

Book excerpt: Casting Gender puts forward a vision of theatre, storytelling, and the performance of the everyday function within the lived spaces of its performers and audiences, asking how women artists/scholars embody meaning, carry social value, and constitute possible identities. Drawing on scholarship in intercultural communication, performance studies, women's studies, and cultural studies, this collection of new, critically informed research advances our understanding of how theater works as intercultural communication and as a vehicle for change. Casting Gender offers varied locations and sites of research, highlighting the rich diversity of women's cultural identities, roles, and societal positions. This book moves beyond the western-centered nature of intercultural performance and intercultural communication theory and practice by creating a forum for nonwestern voices.

Book excerpt: Finding Nouf's Katya Hijazi and Nayir Sharqi return for another thrilling, fast-paced mystery that provides a rare and intimate look into women's lives in the Middle East. Women in Saudi Arabia are expected to lead quiet lives circumscribed by Islamic law and tradition. But Katya, one of the few women in the medical examiner's office, is determined to make her work mean something. When the body of a brutally beaten woman is found on the beach in Jeddah, the city's detectives are ready to dismiss the case as another unsolvable murder-chillingly common in a city where the veils of conservative Islam keep women as anonymous in life as this victim is in death. If this is another housemaid killed by her employer, finding the culprit will be all but impossible. Only Katya is convinced that the victim can be identified and her killer found. She calls upon her friend Nayir for help, and soon discovers that the dead girl was a young filmmaker named Leila, whose controversial documentaries earned her many enemies. With only the woman's clandestine footage as a guide, Katya and Nayir must confront the dark side of Jeddah that Leila struggled to expose: an underworld of prostitution, violence, exploitation, and jealously guarded secrets. Along the way, they form an unlikely alliance with an American woman whose husband has disappeared. Their growing search takes them from the city's car-clogged streets to the deadly vastness of the desert beyond.!--EndFragment--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Muslim women should not wear the veil Across much of the world today, Muslim women of all ages are increasingly choosing to wear the veil. Is this trend a sign of rising piety or a way of asserting Muslim pride? And does the veil really provide women freedom from sexual harassment? Written in the form of letters addressing all those interested in this issue, Questioning the Veil examines the inconsistent and inadequate reasons given for the veil, and points to the dangers and limitations of this highly questionable cultural practice. Marnia Lazreg, a preeminent authority in Middle East women's studies, combines her own experiences growing up in a Muslim family in Algeria with interviews and the real-life stories of other Muslim women to produce this nuanced argument for doing away with the veil. Lazreg stresses that the veil is not included in the five pillars of Islam, asks whether piety sufficiently justifies veiling, explores the adverse psychological effects of the practice on the wearer and those around her, and pays special attention to the negative impact of veiling for young girls. Lazreg's provocative findings indicate that far from being spontaneous, the trend toward wearing the veil has been driven by an organized and growing campaign that includes literature, DVDs, YouTube videos, and courses designed by some Muslim men to teach women about their presumed rights under the veil. An incisive mix of the personal and political, supported by meticulous research, Questioning the Veil will compel all readers to reconsider their views of this controversial and sensitive topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the Bible say about periods? The average woman has 500 periods in her lifetime. And whether yours are mildly annoying, utterly debilitating or emotionally complicated, most of us have at one time or another asked: Why?! This warm, light-hearted, real, honest and at times surprising book gives a biblical perspective on menstruation, as well as a whole lot more. Beginning with periods, Rachel Jones takes readers on an adventure in theology, weaving together wide-ranging reflections on the nature of our bodies, the passing of time, the purpose of pain, and the meaning of life. One thing is for sure: you’ve never read a Christian book quite like this one. Whether you’re in need of hope and help, or are just downright curious, you’ll be refreshed and encouraged by this book. As Rachel puts it, “Whoever you are, my aim is that you reach the end of this book celebrating who God has made you, how God has saved you, and the fact that he speaks liberating and positive truth into all of life’s experiences (even periods)”.

Book excerpt: Owning the Secular examines three case studies dealing with religious symbols and cultural identity, including two public controversies over the veil in Canada – at the federal level and in the province of Québec – and an ex-Muslim podcaster rethinking her atheist identity in the era of Donald Trump and the alt-right. Drawing on theories of discourse analysis and ideology critique, this study calls attention to an evolution in how secularism, nationalism, and multiculturalism in Euro-Western states are debated and understood as competing groups contest and rearrange the meaning of these terms. This is especially true in the digital age as online cultures have transformed how information is spread, how we imagine our communities, build alliances, and produce shared meaning. From recent attempts to prohibit religious symbols in public, to Trump’s so-called Muslim bans, to growing disenchantment with the promises of digital media, this study turns the lens how nation-states, organizations, and individuals attempt to "own" the secular to manage cultural differences, shore up group identity, and stake a claim to some version of Western values amidst the growing uncertainties of neoliberal capitalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The horrific 1915 earthquake that leveled tiny Manoppello, Italy, brought forth from the local church’s rubble one of Christendom’s long-lost, but most precious relics: the small cloth that lay on Jesus’s face in the tomb. Saint John speaks of it in his Gospel: “When Peter went into the tomb, he saw linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself.” Tradition says that Our Lady herself laid this cloth on His face before He was wrapped in His shroud for burial. This small veil — now known as the Holy Face of Manoppello — absorbed the very first new breath of the Risen Christ . . . and at that same instant had imprinted on itself, miraculously, a vivid image of the now-resurrected Jesus. Modern scholars have confirmed that this image corresponds perfectly in all its measurements to the face of the dead Christ on the more famous Shroud of Turin. Unlike the Shroud, however, the Holy Face of Manoppello shows not the grim visage of a dead man with eyes closed, but the lively face of the living Christ, His eyes wide open, piercing us with their gaze. In 2006, Pope Benedict made a pilgrimage to Manoppello to pray before this image. In the decade since then, tens of thousands of other pilgrims have followed in the Pope’s footsteps, making the trek to central Italy to meet Jesus face-to-face. Now, thanks to author Paul Badde you can learn of the loss and recovery of this precious relic. Better yet, by means of the dozens of color pictures in this book, you, too, can encounter this miraculous cloth, and finally gaze reverently on the face of the living Christ Himself!

Book excerpt: Latimer is cursed with psychic abilities that allow him to see the future, yet he’s unable to avoid the dark turn of his own life. What many consider a gift, he sees as a curse that has destroyed his ability to have normal relationships. Latimer can hear people’s deepest thoughts and has visions of their impending future. It’s a power he acquired at a young age following a brief illness. Latimer loathes his ability, as it has made it nearly impossible for him to make genuine connections. He unknowingly uncovers dark secrets that reveal the worst of humanity. Despite this foresight, Latimer’s desire to control his own narrative blinds him to an inevitable outcome. The Lifted Veil is a unique entry in Eliot’s literary catalogue. It was released the same year as her debut novel, Adam Bede, and is a stark departure from her usual themes. It highlights a different point-of-view and Eliot’s diverse storytelling ability. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Lifted Veil is both modern and readable.

Book excerpt: Written to fill the gap in available knowledge on trance, prophecy, deity-possession and mediumship within the neo-Pagan and Wiccan communities, Lifting the Veil has been developed from Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone's personal work and public workshops on trance-prophecy and ecstatic ritual over 25 years. The book covers the history and modern practice of trance as well as the methods of practice. It also explores the four keys to trance-prophecy, which include the importance of understanding mythical cosmology and psychology, understanding the role of energy in trance, the nature of spirits and deity, and understanding what trance is and the techniques involved. Because trance-prophecy is a very subjective process, the book includes descriptions of the personal experiences of others and transcriptions from several independent sessions by modern seers and priestesses.
