Book excerpt: A model of magnetic configurations that has both shear and variation of the field curvature along the magnetic field is constructed. The stability analysis of this system is performed by expanding the perturbation functions to phi0 which is constant along the field and phi1 which is sinusoidally varied along the field line. The shear term is retained in the form of differntial operations in zeta, the coordinate parallel to the pressure gradient. After several simplifications, the equation reduces itself to the fourth order differential equation. The eigenvalue of this equation is numerically obtained. The calculated critical .beta. plotted versus the well depth parameter, h, makes a smooth transition between h 0 (maximum average B) and h 0 (minimum average B). Using the same technique, the nondivergent solution to the localized shear mode (Suydam mode) is also obtained by retaining the inertia term.

Book Synopsis Low Beta Equilibrium and Stability for Anisotropic Pressure Closed Field Line Plasma Confinement Systems by :

This book was released on 1994 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General formalism is developed to analyze the equilibrium and stability of low beta anisotropic pressure plasmas confined in closed field line magnetic systems. The formalism allows one to consider rather general magnetic systems with nonuniform axis curvature and longitudinal profiles of toroidal and multipole poloidal field. It also allows having a strong pressure anisotropy corresponding to enhanced plasma pressure in mirror cells of the system. As an example of such a system the authors consider the recently proposed linked mirror neutron source (LMNS). Application of the above formalism to the LMNS analysis confirms most of the preliminary results, however, they obtain a considerable reduction of mirror cell axis curvature and an appreciable ellipticity of plasma cross-section in the mirror cell midplane. They have also optimized the longitudinal pressure and magnetic field distribution.

Book Synopsis Low-Frequency Waves in Space Plasmas by : Andreas Keiling
Download or read book Low-Frequency Waves in Space Plasmas written by Andreas Keiling and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-02-10 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-frequency waves in space plasmas have been studied for several decades, and our knowledge gain has been incremental with several paradigm-changing leaps forward. In our solar system, such waves occur in the ionospheres and magnetospheres of planets, and around our Moon. They occur in the solar wind, and more recently, they have been confirmed in the Sun’s atmosphere as well. The goal of wave research is to understand their generation, their propagation, and their interaction with the surrounding plasma. Low-frequency Waves in Space Plasmas presents a concise and authoritative up-to-date look on where wave research stands: What have we learned in the last decade? What are unanswered questions? While in the past waves in different astrophysical plasmas have been largely treated in separate books, the unique feature of this monograph is that it covers waves in many plasma regions, including: Waves in geospace, including ionosphere and magnetosphere Waves in planetary magnetospheres Waves at the Moon Waves in the solar wind Waves in the solar atmosphere Because of the breadth of topics covered, this volume should appeal to a broad community of space scientists and students, and it should also be of interest to astronomers/astrophysicists who are studying space plasmas beyond our Solar System.
Book Synopsis Trapped Electron Stabilization of Ballooning Modes in Low Aspect Ratio Toroidal Plasmas by :
Download or read book Trapped Electron Stabilization of Ballooning Modes in Low Aspect Ratio Toroidal Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kinetic effects of trapped electron dynamics and finite gyroradii and magnetic drift motion of ions are shown to give rise to a large parallel electric field and hence a parallel current that greatly enhances the stabilizing effect of field line tension for ballooning modes in low aspect ratio toroidal plasmas. For large aspect ratio the stabilizing effect increases (reduces) the [beta](= 2P/B[sup 2]) threshold for the first (second) stability of the kinetic ballooning mode (KBM) from the MHD [beta] threshold value by a factor proportional to the trapped electron density fraction. For small aspect ratio the stabilizing effect can greatly increase the [beta] threshold of the first stability of KBMs from the MHD [beta] threshold by S[sub c] [approx-equal] 1 + (n[sub e]/n[sub eu])[delta], where n[sub e]/n[sub eu] is the ratio of the total electron density to the untrapped electron density, and [delta] depends on the trapped electron dynamics and finite gyroradii and magnetic drift motion of ions. If n[sub e]/n[sub eu]” 1 as in the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) with an aspect ratio approximately equal to 1.4, the KBM should be stable for [beta] [le] 1 for finite magnetic shear. Therefore, unstable KBMs are expected only in the weak shear region near the radial location of the minimum of the safety factor in NSTX reverse shear discharges.
