Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key aim of this book is to explore the global conservation and management of sharks. There has been a rapid decline in populations of many shark species, while new science has emerged of the critical role they play in marine ecosystems. However, the authors show that conservation law and policy have been slow to develop, with only a small number of iconic species being protected worldwide. The increase in fishing impact – primarily through shark finning and by-catch - has led to shark conservation receiving greater international attention in recent years. The book explores our current knowledge and status of the law and science in relation to sharks with a particular focus on improving frameworks for their conservation and management. Recent trends are analysed, including shark finning bans that have been put in place in several countries, the widening number of nations establishing shark sanctuaries and the growth of shark-based tourism. The efficacy of current listing processes for endangered species and fisheries regulations is also examined. Tourism is explored as an alternative to fishing and the risks and impacts associated with this industry are analysed. Contributors include leading authorities from universities and conservation organizations in North America, Europe and Australia. A common theme is to emphasise the importance of collaborative governance between various interest groups and the need for inter-disciplinary research and management approaches that are necessary to address the decline in sharks.

Book excerpt: In the future, scientific and genetic advancement has gone through the roof. With the world becoming much smaller because of this, America is constantly trying to come up with new and inventive ways to stay on top as the strongest country in the world. As new advancements in weapons and tools of war are produced, so is the need from our government to come up with ways to protect our people and country especially our shorelines. This is where the new branch of the Armed Forces is created, the Aqua Marines. Scientists had recently discovered that sharks had evolved in our oceans to survive. One species, the great white shark, known as a solitary species, now hunts in packs. What was really interesting is that they had evolved differently in each coast. In the west coast, they hunted like lions do in a group called a pride with the alpha shark being female and in the east coast, they hunted and acted like a wolfpack with the leader being a dominant male. Our leaders and marine biologists were intrigued by the possibility of using these beasts to patrol and protect our shorelines. That was the easy part; the hard part was trying to capture these incredible animals without becoming part of their diet. This is where the Aqua Marines come in, trained totally to work underwater to track and herd these beasts into underwater holding cells where they could be studied in hopes of finding a way for them to do our bidding. Unbeknownst to the marines, other people had different ideas and with their knowledge to gene splicing and a total disregard for morals and ethics, a new superhero is born. His name is Stamper, John Stamper. So stay out of the water, The Frenzy is about to begin.

Taking a bite of passion has never carried more risk—or promised sweeter reward. Fate has other ideas, however, as Sebastian is targeted by unknown enemies and Abbi is caught in the fray. Will the danger draw them closer or drive them apart?

A few miles from San Francisco lives a population of the ocean's largest and most famous predators. Each fall, while the city's inhabitants dine on steaks, salads, and sandwiches, the great white sharks return to California's Farallon Islands to dine on their favorite meal: the seals that live on the island's rocky coasts. Massive, fast, and perfectly adapted to hunting after 11 million years of evolution, the great whites are among the planet's most fearsome, fascinating, and least understood animals. In the fall of 2012, Katherine Roy visited the Farallons with the scientists who study the islands' shark population. She witnessed seal attacks, observed sharks being tagged in the wild, and got an up close look at the dramatic Farallons—a wildlife refuge that is strictly off-limits to all but the scientists who work there. Neighborhood Sharks is an intimate portrait of the life cycle, biology, and habitat of the great white shark, based on the latest research and an up-close visit with these amazing animals.

Book excerpt: This book is the most thorough exploration to date of the many ways in which a wild creature has been absorbed, reimagined and represented across the ages in all of the major art forms. The authors consider not only how the identity of sharks in the natural environment became incorporated into a cultural environment but also how sharks came to be considered the most feared creatures in the open oceans as a consequence of this incorporation. Yet sharks are especially important in helping to maintain a balance that is essential to the health of the oceans. The book begins with a treatment of the three sharks at the top of global shark-attack files from scientific, economic and environmental perspectives. Subsequent chapters engage with cultural representations of sharks in poetry, drama, art, novels, screenplay adaptations and films. Through an exploration of the ways in which sharks have been represented in human culture through the centuries, this book alerts the global community to the importance of sharks as a common cultural heritage. It aims to change perceptions of sharks so that they can become more revered than feared. The authors of this book argue that an increased understanding of sharks should lead to the development of better strategies for shark and human interactions. This book will be of great interest to researchers and students of the Environmental Humanities, Cultural History and the Arts. It is also excellent supplementary reading for courses in Zoology and Marine Science.
