These changes had far-reaching effects on both the treatment of women in Chinese society and on the formation of Chinese philosophical discourse on ethics, cosmology, epistemology, and self-cultivation. Warring States and Han dynasty narratives frequently represented women as intellectually adroit, politically astute, and ethically virtuous; these histories, discourses, and life stories portray women as active participants within their own society, not inert victims of it. The women depicted resembled sages, ministers, and generals as the mainstays and destroyers of dynasties. These stories emphasized that sagacity, intellect, strategy, and statecraft were virtues proper to women, an emphasis that effectively disappeared from later collections and instruction texts by and for women. During the same period, there were also important changes in the understanding of two polarities that delineated what now is called gender. Han correlative cosmology included a range of hierarchical analogies between yin and yang and men and women, and the understanding of yin and yang shifted from complementarity toward hierarchy. Similarly, the doctrine of separate spheres (inner and outer, nei-wai) shifted from a notion of appropriate distinction between men and women toward physical, social, and intellectual separation and isolation.

For the past 16 years he has been pastoring Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Webster, MA. Simultaneously he directs the Missions Institute of Orthodoxy Christianity at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, where he teaches as an adjunct instructor at both Holy Cross and Hellenic College. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Orthodox Christian Mission Center. Fr. Luke has been involved in the Orthodox Church's missionary movement since 1987. Together with his wife Presbytera Faith, he served as a missionary in post-communist Albania for ten and a half years, and in East Africa for eighteen months. He has led nine Project Mexico mission teams to Tijuana, Mexico where his church group has built homes for needy families while supporting the St. Innocent Orphanage. He also has offered a course at HCHC for the past 10 years on "The Missiology of Archbishop Anastasios of Albania" which includes taking students on a mission practicum to Albania. Book excerpt: The encyclical Veritatis splendor (The Splendor of Truth) represents the first document of the magisterium devoted to the foundations of the Catholic moral life. Though it was intended to confront a genuine crisis of moral disintegration and to offer positive directions for carrying out the work of renewing moral theology, it was fiercely criticized by theologians who regarded it as a simplistic and "repressive" document. Now, several years after the publication of the encyclical, Livio Melina offers an original contribution not only to the study of Veritatis splendor and the controversy surrounding it, but also to the field of moral theology as a whole. In Sharing in Christ's Virtues, Melina proposes a blueprint for organizing moral theology, one that is in harmony with the directions given in Veritatis splendor and one that likewise respects the requirements of both the "theological" and the "scientific" character of the discipline. He describes it as a "Christocentricism of the virtues," which understands the moral life of Christians as a participation in the virtues of Christ by means of the grace of one's ecclesial incorporation in Christ. Melina argues that the renewal of moral theology should result in, first, a search for a more integral and dynamic understanding of human action, and second, a theological "re-dimensioning" of morality to better comprehend the synergy between human action and God's action.
