Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abram Bobrow is a man tormented by the ghosts and horrors of the past. Relentless nightmares force him to relive a time in his life that was unimaginably horrible. A decade after the end of World War II and the Bobrow family's emigration to the United States, Abram's young sons, Jerry and Bill (ten and twelve years old) become aware of their father's nightly torment, and beg to know why these terrible dreams still occur. Deciding that they are finally old enough to hear this harrowing story, over the next seven days, Abram carefully details what it was like to live though one of the most terrible, tragic and darkest periods of human history. This is Abram Bobrow's true story-how he and his wife Julia, who lived through a Nazi firing squad, escaped into the vast forests of western Byelorussia, became Jewish partisan fighters and fought back against the Nazis. This is a unique story of the triumph and indomitability of the human spirit.

Book excerpt: While watching a Black Lives Matter protest on the news, Joy notices that her parents are wearing the same t-shirts as the protesters. She looks at her father and asks, "Daddy, why are we Black when our skin is brown?" This question sparks a family conversation where Joy's father explains the origins of race, as the family is transported into the protest march, and they walk through their community looking at the murals that they pass. Black Joy: A healthy conversation about race is a follow-up to "Daddy Why Am I Brown?" A healthy conversation about skin color and family. We pick up two years after Joy talks to her dad about skin color. Through Black Joy, we continue that conversation by directly addressing the concept of race from an age-appropriate perspective. Joy learns about the social rationale for inventing the idea of race. She also learns why it is important for Blackness to be transformed from a sign of oppression to an identity built of strength and resilience.

Book excerpt: Now in paperback. The bestselling author of The Willpower Instinct introduces a surprising science-based book that doesn't tell us why we should exercise but instead shows us how to fall in love with movement. Exercise is health-enhancing and life-extending, yet many of us feel it's a chore. But, as Kelly McGonigal reveals, it doesn't have to be. Movement can and should be a source of joy. Through her trademark blend of science and storytelling, McGonigal draws on insights from neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and evolutionary biology, as well as memoirs, ethnographies, and philosophers. She shows how movement is intertwined with some of the most basic human joys, including self-expression, social connection, and mastery--and why it is a powerful antidote to the modern epidemics of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. McGonigal tells the stories of people who have found fulfillment and belonging through running, walking, dancing, swimming, weightlifting, and more, with examples that span the globe, from Tanzania, where one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes on the planet live, to a dance class at Juilliard for people with Parkinson's disease, to the streets of London, where volunteers combine fitness and community service, to races in the remote wilderness, where athletes push the limits of what a human can endure. Along the way, McGonigal paints a portrait of human nature that highlights our capacity for hope, cooperation, and self-transcendence. The result is a revolutionary narrative that goes beyond familiar arguments in favor of exercise, to illustrate why movement is integral to both our happiness and our humanity. Readers will learn what they can do in their own lives and communities to harness the power of movement to create happiness, meaning, and connection.

When we go to an optimologist, the only person who would know our glasses’ number is us—the same way no one else can tell us what makes us happy and gives us joy. However, there are a lot of reasons for joy and happiness in our lives. This book is just a reminder for some of them. The purpose of this book is to cheer the readers, even for a few moments. This book is full of quotes that will make your day. As Michel De Montaigne said, “I quote others only in order the better to express myself.”

In Ross Gay’s new collection of small, daily wonders, again written over the course of a year, one of America’s most original voices continues his ongoing investigation of delight. For Gay, what delights us is what connects us, what gives us meaning, from the joy of hearing a nostalgic song blasting from a passing car to the pleasure of refusing the “nefarious” scannable QR code menus, from the tiny dog he fell hard for to his mother baking a dozen kinds of cookies for her grandchildren. As always, Gay revels in the natural world—sweet potatoes being harvested, a hummingbird carousing in the beebalm, a sunflower growing out of a wall around the cemetery, the shared bounty from a neighbor’s fig tree—and the trillion mysterious ways this glorious earth delights us. The Book of (More) Delights is a volume to savor and share.

This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emotions have long been an interest for those studying ancient Greece and Rome. But while the last few decades have produced excellent studies of individual emotions and the different approaches to them by the major philosophical schools, the focus has been almost entirely on negative emotions. This might give the impression that the Greeks and Romans had little to say about positive emotion, something that would be misguided. As the chapters in this collection indicate, there are representations of positive emotions extending from archaic Greek poetry to Augustine, and in both philosophical works and literary genres as wide-ranging as lyric poetry, forensic oratory, comedy, didactic poetry, and the novel. Nor is the evidence uniform: while many of the literary representations give expression to positive emotion but also describe its loss, the philosophers offer a more optimistic assessment of the possibilities of attaining joy or contentment in this life. The positive emotions show some of the same features that all emotions do. But unlike the negative emotions, which we are able to describe and analyze in great detail because of our preoccupation with them, positive emotions tend to be harder to articulate. Hence the interest of the present study, which considers how positive emotions are described, their relationship to other emotions, the ways in which they are provoked or upset by circumstances, how they complicate and enrich our relationships with other people, and which kinds of positive emotion we should seek to integrate. The ancient works have a great deal to say about all of these topics, and for that reason deserve more study, both for our understanding of antiquity and for our understanding of the positive emotions in general.
