Book Synopsis The Impact of Employee Stock Options Issued by Companies on Stock Repurchases by : Ming-Cheng Wu
Download or read book The Impact of Employee Stock Options Issued by Companies on Stock Repurchases written by Ming-Cheng Wu and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents significant factors that affect firms' decision whether to repurchase shares or not. Empirical results show that when the debt ratio is lower, the stock price is seriously underpriced and the firm size is larger, firms tend to buyback their own shares. Regarding employee stock options, managers seem to buy more treasury stocks when the levels of these stock options are high. This includes total options outstanding, executive options outstanding, executive options exercisable and unexercisable. Furthermore, firms have a significantly positive effect on the announcement return of stock repurchases prior to companies issuing stock options. This result holds for both long-run and short-run periods. But the long-run return turns to be significantly negative after companies issued stock options. This shows that the signaling hypothesis may be replaced by the option-funding hypothesis. This also implies that employee stock options have a great impact on the decision to stock repurchases.

Book Synopsis Financial Decisions and Markets by : John Y. Campbell
Download or read book Financial Decisions and Markets written by John Y. Campbell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the field's leading authority, the most authoritative and comprehensive advanced-level textbook on asset pricing In Financial Decisions and Markets, John Campbell, one of the field’s most respected authorities, provides a broad graduate-level overview of asset pricing. He introduces students to leading theories of portfolio choice, their implications for asset prices, and empirical patterns of risk and return in financial markets. Campbell emphasizes the interplay of theory and evidence, as theorists respond to empirical puzzles by developing models with new testable implications. The book shows how models make predictions not only about asset prices but also about investors’ financial positions, and how they often draw on insights from behavioral economics. After a careful introduction to single-period models, Campbell develops multiperiod models with time-varying discount rates, reviews the leading approaches to consumption-based asset pricing, and integrates the study of equities and fixed-income securities. He discusses models with heterogeneous agents who use financial markets to share their risks, but also may speculate against one another on the basis of different beliefs or private information. Campbell takes a broad view of the field, linking asset pricing to related areas, including financial econometrics, household finance, and macroeconomics. The textbook works in discrete time throughout, and does not require stochastic calculus. Problems are provided at the end of each chapter to challenge students to develop their understanding of the main issues in financial economics. The most comprehensive and balanced textbook on asset pricing available, Financial Decisions and Markets is an essential resource for all graduate students and practitioners in finance and related fields. Integrated treatment of asset pricing theory and empirical evidence Emphasis on investors’ decisions Broad view linking the field to financial econometrics, household finance, and macroeconomics Topics treated in discrete time, with no requirement for stochastic calculus Solutions manual for problems available to professors
Book Synopsis Advances in Behavioral Finance, Volume II by : Richard H. Thaler
Download or read book Advances in Behavioral Finance, Volume II written by Richard H. Thaler and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-05 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a definitive and wide-ranging overview of developments in behavioral finance over the past ten years. In 1993, the first volume provided the standard reference to this new approach in finance--an approach that, as editor Richard Thaler put it, "entertains the possibility that some of the agents in the economy behave less than fully rationally some of the time." Much has changed since then. Not least, the bursting of the Internet bubble and the subsequent market decline further demonstrated that financial markets often fail to behave as they would if trading were truly dominated by the fully rational investors who populate financial theories. Behavioral finance has made an indelible mark on areas from asset pricing to individual investor behavior to corporate finance, and continues to see exciting empirical and theoretical advances. Advances in Behavioral Finance, Volume II constitutes the essential new resource in the field. It presents twenty recent papers by leading specialists that illustrate the abiding power of behavioral finance--of how specific departures from fully rational decision making by individual market agents can provide explanations of otherwise puzzling market phenomena. As with the first volume, it reaches beyond the world of finance to suggest, powerfully, the importance of pursuing behavioral approaches to other areas of economic life. The contributors are Brad M. Book Synopsis Irrational Exuberance by : Robert J. Shiller
Download or read book Irrational Exuberance written by Robert J. Shiller and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why the irrational exuberance of investors hasn't disappeared since the financial crisis In this revised, updated, and expanded edition of his New York Times bestseller, Nobel Prize–winning economist Robert Shiller, who warned of both the tech and housing bubbles, cautions that signs of irrational exuberance among investors have only increased since the 2008–9 financial crisis. With high stock and bond prices and the rising cost of housing, the post-subprime boom may well turn out to be another illustration of Shiller's influential argument that psychologically driven volatility is an inherent characteristic of all asset markets. In other words, Irrational Exuberance is as relevant as ever. Previous editions covered the stock and housing markets—and famously predicted their crashes. This edition expands its coverage to include the bond market, so that the book now addresses all of the major investment markets. It also includes updated data throughout, as well as Shiller's 2013 Nobel Prize lecture, which places the book in broader context. In addition to diagnosing the causes of asset bubbles, Irrational Exuberance recommends urgent policy changes to lessen their likelihood and severity—and suggests ways that individuals can decrease their risk before the next bubble bursts. No one whose future depends on a retirement account, a house, or other investments can afford not to read this book.

Download or read book First Responders written by Ben S. Bernanke and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insider’s view of the U.S. government’s response to the 2007–2009 global financial crisis, as recounted by the people who made the key decisions In 2008, the world’s financial system stood on the brink of disaster. The United States faced an unprecedented crisis when the investment bank Lehman Brothers collapsed, setting off a global panic. Faced with the prospect of a new Great Depression, the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and other agencies took extraordinary measures to contain the damage and steady the financial system and the economy. Edited by three of the policymakers who led the government’s response to the crisis, with chapters written by the teams tasked with finding policy solutions, this book provides a comprehensive accounting of the internal debates and controversies surrounding the measures that were taken to stabilize the financial system and the economy. Offering previously untold insight into the key choices (including rejected options) and a frank evaluation of successes and failures, this volume is both an important historical document and an indispensable guide for confronting future financial calamities.
Book Synopsis Corporate Payout Policy by : Harry DeAngelo
Download or read book Corporate Payout Policy written by Harry DeAngelo and published by Now Publishers Inc. This book was released on 2009 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate Payout Policy synthesizes the academic research on payout policy and explains "how much, when, and how". That is (i) the overall value of payouts over the life of the enterprise, (ii) the time profile of a firm's payouts across periods, and (iii) the form of those payouts. The authors conclude that today's theory does a good job of explaining the general features of corporate payout policies, but some important gaps remain. So while our emphasis is to clarify "what we know" about payout policy, the authors also identify a number of interesting unresolved questions for future research. Corporate Payout Policy discusses potential influences on corporate payout policy including managerial use of payouts to signal future earnings to outside investors, individuals' behavioral biases that lead to sentiment-based demands for distributions, the desire of large block stockholders to maintain corporate control, and personal tax incentives to defer payouts. The authors highlight four important "carry-away" points: the literature's focus on whether repurchases will (or should) drive out dividends is misplaced because it implicitly assumes that a single payout vehicle is optimal; extant empirical evidence is strongly incompatible with the notion that the primary purpose of dividends is to signal managers' views of future earnings to outside investors; over-confidence on the part of managers is potentially a first-order determinant of payout policy because it induces them to over-retain resources to invest in dubious projects and so behavioral biases may, in fact, turn out to be more important than agency costs in explaining why investors pressure firms to accelerate payouts; the influence of controlling stockholders on payout policy --- particularly in non-U.S. firms, where controlling stockholders are common --- is a promising area for future research. Corporate Payout Policy is required reading for both researchers and practitioners interested in understanding this central topic in corporate finance and governance.
Book Synopsis Producing Prosperity by : Gary P. Pisano
Download or read book Producing Prosperity written by Gary P. Pisano and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing’s central role in global innovation Companies compete on the decisions they make. For years—even decades—in response to intensifying global competition, companies decided to outsource their manufacturing operations in order to reduce costs. But we are now seeing the alarming long-term effect of those choices: in many cases, once manufacturing capabilities go away, so does much of the ability to innovate and compete. Manufacturing, it turns out, really matters in an innovation-driven economy. In Producing Prosperity, Harvard Business School professors Gary Pisano and Willy Shih show the disastrous consequences of years of poor sourcing decisions and underinvestment in manufacturing capabilities. They reveal how today’s undervalued manufacturing operations often hold the seeds of tomorrow’s innovative new products, arguing that companies must reinvest in new product and process development in the US industrial sector. Only by reviving this “industrial commons” can the world’s largest economy build the expertise and manufacturing muscle to regain competitive advantage. America needs a manufacturing renaissance—for restoring itself, and for the global economy as a whole. This will require major changes. Pisano and Shih show how company-level choices are key to the sustained success of industries and economies, and they provide business leaders with a framework for understanding the links between manufacturing and innovation that will enable them to make better outsourcing decisions. They also detail how government must change its support of basic and applied scientific research, and promote collaboration between business and academia. For executives, policymakers, academics, and innovators alike, Producing Prosperity provides the clearest and most compelling account yet of how the American economy lost its competitive edge—and how to get it back.

Book Synopsis Mergers, Acquisitions, and Other Restructuring Activities by : Donald DePamphilis
Download or read book Mergers, Acquisitions, and Other Restructuring Activities written by Donald DePamphilis and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two strengths distinguish this textbook from others. One is its presentation of subjects in the contexts where they occur. Students see different perspectives on subjects and learn how complex and dynamic the mergers and acquisitions environment is. The other is its use of current events. Of its 72 case studies, 3/4 are new or have been updated. The implications of Dodd-Frank and US Supreme Court rulings affecting the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, among other regulatory changes, are developed to enhance teaching and learning experiences. Other improvements to the 6th edition have shortened and simplified chapters, increased the numbers and types of pedagogical supplements, and expanded the international appeal of examples. With a renewed focus on empirical and quantitative examples, the 6th edition continues to demonstrate how people work together on mergers and acquisitions and why the actions of specific individuals have far-reaching implications. Presents an integrated approach to the activities involved in mergers, acquisitions, business alliances, and corporate restructurings. All chapters have been revised, updated, and contain new content, and 14 include more extensive changes. Structural revisions make chapters more streamlined, shorter, and less complex. Case studies cover a dozen industries, and 75% are new or have been updated. All include discussion questions and answers.
