Book excerpt: Shannon Simpson has a kind soul, sometimes questionable judgment, and courage to spare. And she has no idea she can communicate with animals when she sets off on a 100-mile trek through the forest seeking her long-lost grandmother. Finding Gran means winding her way safely through the woods with only a compass, her wits and a mysterious, possibly magical, marra mamba stone to guide her. During her journey, Shannon faces bad weather, injuries, hunger, thirst, and wild animals—some nice and some not so nice. And along the way, she uncovers secrets about her family and herself.

Book excerpt: Written in an engaging and student-friendly style, American Odysseys examines the entire period between 1492 and 1763, covering important topics that shaped the colonial experience across time and in a variety of places. Authors Timothy J. Shannon and David N. Gellman use a thematic approach, focusing on colonial development and integration within a wider Atlantic world. Each chapter begins with the story of an individual who experienced the wonder and terror of colonization firsthand, so that students can feel a human connection to each of these topics and themes. Taken together, these figures--Indians, servants, slaves, explorers, planters--embody the full array of peoples and cultures that gave the colonial era a trans-Atlantic, multicultural character. Each chapter also features a chronology of events described in that chapter. Maps and images throughout the book help visually orient readers to the stories that comprise this concise yet broad-ranging narrative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred and Immoral: On the Writings of Chuck Palahniuk, edited by Jeffrey A. Sartain, combines the efforts of an international list of writers to explore the depths of Chuck Palahniuk’s fiction. Scholars have paid attention Palahniuk’s premiere novel, Fight Club, for years. Sacred and Immoral is the first anthology dedicated to scholarship focused on Palahniuk’s work following Fight Club, which he has been producing at an average of a book a year for thirteen years. By collecting the work of an interdisciplinary group of scholars under a single cover, Sacred and Immoral extends the reach of Palahniuk scholarship beyond any previous publication. Sacred and Immoral provides the single most comprehensive and useful scholarly resource to date for anyone wishing to examine Chuck Palahniuk’s fiction in an academic context. Some of the anthology’s chapters situate Palahniuk’s work within existing generic conventions, while other chapters are concerned with the theoretical underpinnings of Palahniuk’s writing and the philosophical implications of his work. With eleven new critical analyses of Palahniuk’s later novels, Sacred and Immoral drastically expands the range and depth of academic inquiry into Palahniuk’s fiction commensurate with the prominent and exciting position Palahniuk’s work occupies in contemporary culture. Sacred and Immoral also includes a new interview with Chuck Palahniuk, conducted by literary scholar Matt Kavanagh. Finally, Sacred and Immoral boasts the most complete primary and secondary bibliographies of Palahniuk-related materials to date. Sacred and Immoral is not an attempt to have the last word on Chuck Palahniuk’s literature. Rather, this volume is a springboard for other projects that relate to Palahniuk’s writings. The anthology provides a critical framework for Palahniuk’s later literature that students, teachers, and researchers can use in their own classrooms and writing.

Thirty years ago, Luke didn't keep his promise to Ana Sanchez, a high-profile dissident and his former lover. Her uncle was Cuba's deceased Hero of the Republic, General Arnaldo Ochoa. Luke promised to tell his story to the world. Luke finds out that Ana is still alive but in failing health. In Miami, he catches Cubana Aviacion's last flight to Havana. Then COVID-19 hits Cuba in 2020. All bets are off if Luke will prevail. His odyssey takes him through police interrogations, steamy salsa clubs and tropical storms. The Inspector, tipped off by Cuban intelligence, is intent on taking him down. Whom can Luke trust? Startling news slaps him in the face. Now he must escape. Can Luke keep his promise or will he die trying? Note: The demise of General Arnoldo Ochoa is a topic of debate among expatriates and cognoscenti of Cuba. Ochoa's military campaigns in Africa are still taught at the U.S. and Russian War Colleges. This book is based on 65 interviews of Cubans in-country and from exiles abroad. Its places and names have been changed to protect the innocent.

There's much more to surfing than palm trees and beach boy cliches. People surf not only in Hawaii, but also in Norway, South Korea, and India. Surf Odyssey is a book about the world of surfing today and those that live in it. This community is made up of the surfers themselves as well as surf photographers and board builders who are also spreading its distinctive spirit into other creative fields. Comparable to the new outdoor movement, today's surfing is about an attitude toward life, a lust for adventure, and a love of nature that one can only find far away from established spots. Surf Odyssey presents this scene's places, people, stories, and brands. Its stunning photography is sure to inspire many further surfing exploits."

Edge of Midnight On the very day an arsonist burns down Liv Endicott's bookstore, she finds another shock; Sean McCloud. He's still the man she’s always wanted. Extreme Danger Nobody's home when Becca Cantrell takes a midnight skinnydip--and is hauled out by a guy with burning eyes. He is the embodiment of her most intense fantasies. And she's up for risky thrills... Nick Ward can't tell Becca that he's spying on a vicious Russian crime boss. Ultimate Weapon Val Janos is all about undercover operations. He is mysterious, sinister, and lethally hot. Only Tamara can understand--and match--the intensity that drives him to win at all costs. Val has one weak spot: Imre, the man who befriended him when he was a kid abandoned on the streets of Budapest. But Val’s worst enemy knows about Imre, and his head is on the block if Val doesn't deliver Tam... Fade to Midnight If the wrong person learned of Edie Parrish's gift, her life would be in danger, so she is good at keeping people away. But when Kev Larson discovers who she is, Edie's only choice is to trust him. And soon, Edie can't resist her consuming desire--even though she knows she'll have to pay a price for it.

Book excerpt: When the Venezuelan freelance terrorist Arsenio Cruz broke out of prison he made straight for Barcelona. Once there, he was struck by photographs that paparazzi had snatched of the Princess of Wales, currently holidaying off Spain on the yacht Mirabelle. Indisputably worthy of his nickname 'El Asesino' (The Assassin), Arsenio nevertheless decided to kidnap rather than kill the Princess, spurred on by the thought of the biggest ransom ever demanded. However, in order for his plan to succeed he would have to go head to head with Major Zaki Fernandez of the elite Special Boat Service, the very man who had put him behind bars all those years ago. Marine F SBS: Royal Target sees the legendary SBS tested to their very limits as they race against the clock to thwart one of the most audacious kidnappings of the 20th century. This is classic military fiction at its best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this masterly interpretation of narrative sequence in the Iliad, Keith Stanley not only sharpens the current debate over the date and creation of the poem, but also challenges the view of this work as primarily a celebration of heroic force. He begins by studying the intricate ring-composition in the verses describing Achilles' shield, then extends this analysis to reveal the Iliad as an elaborate and self-conscious formal whole. In so doing he defends the hypothesis that the poem as we know it is a massive reorganization and expansion of earlier "Homeric" material, written in response to the need for a stable text for repeated performance at the sixth-century Athenian festival for the city's patron goddess. Stanley explores the arrangement of the poem's books, all unified by theme and structure, showing how this allowed for artistically satisfying and practically feasible recitation over a period of three or four days. Taking structural emphasis as a guide to poetic discourse, the author argues that the Iliad is not a poem of "might"--as opposed to the Odyssean celebration of "guile"--but that in advocating social and personal reconciliation the poem offers a profound indictment of a warring heroic society. Lovers Shannon and Daniel are about to find out. Before Shannon says yes to Daniel's proposal of marriage, she wants to know for certain that they are compatible. To that end, they sail to the Bahamas on Daniel's sailboat. Could the pirates be telling the truth, that they are from the 1700s? Has the violent storm they'd encountered taken them into the Bermuda Triangle only to drop them into the twenty-first century? Does Shannon suffer from the Stockholm Syndrom as she fights to stay alive? And will Daniel find her alive and well? Only time will tell.
