Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments in shallow water analogy facilities were made in order to establish geometric configurations of cone-decelerator systems which in supersonic flow are stable and have practically steady flow pattern. Three configurations evolved which maximum diameters amount to to 2.10, 1.71, and 1.55 cone base diameters. The experiments provided also the decelerator inlet and outlet areas as well as the decelerator standoff distance behind the cone base. Also, area ratios were calculated in view of the flow pattern observed in the water analogy experiments. The calculated and emperically derived area ratios agree reasonably well. Wind tunnel models were designed in view of experience gained in these studies.
