Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cliché and reality are rooted in India's long history. No invader or British Raj is ruling us. We have our own government but are we anywhere near to what we were in our glorious past? If Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa had highly precise science of civil engineering and architecture then why can't we have clean and orderly cities now where people can live with basic dignity without unruly traffic and filthy streets? If Megasthenese said that in India thefts were extremely rare, that Indians honoured truth as a virtue, why today even after paying a bribe one is unsure if his work gets done? If Marco-polo rated Indians to be the best merchants in the world and the most truthful , then why in these times we think of our politicians, industrialists and bureaucrats as self-servers, obstructive, corrupt and always blocking the economic reforms? If we were straight forward, if it was love of truth and justice that Indians were known for, then why can't we insist loudly and clearly and courageously to defend our claim? If no one ever accused us of falsehood then why can't we redeem that same rule of law and decency? Why is there such deep rooted corruption and why an ever pervasive flair for free riding? Why are we ever ready to blame anyone but ourselves for our collective plight? How, where, what went wrong? Will our grandchildren also inherit a corrupt and inefficient system of governance? Is it that words come easier to us, actions come harder? If as people of one nation we have lost our sensitivity to the misery and mediocrity around us, then what value system we are passing on to the next generation; scepticism, oppression and corruption? Sometimes; questions are too complicated, especially if we fear the answers, sometimes; the worst battle we have to fight is between what we know and what we feel.
Book Synopsis Indian Critiques of Gandhi by : Harold Coward
Download or read book Indian Critiques of Gandhi written by Harold Coward and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Gandhi has been the subject of hundreds of books and an Oscar-winning film, there has been no sustained study of his engagement with major figures in the Indian Independence Movement who were often his critics from 1920–1948. This book fills that gap by examining the strengths and weaknesses of Gandhi's contribution to India as evidenced in the letters, speeches, and newspaper articles focused on the dialogue/debate between Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, Rabindranath Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, Bhim Rao Ambedkar, Annie Besant, and C. F. Andrews. The book also covers key groups within India that Gandhi sought to incorporate into his Independence Movement—the Hindu Right, Muslims, Christians, and Sikhs—and analyzes Gandhi's ambiguous stance regarding the Hindi-Urdu question and its impact on the Independence struggle.

Book Synopsis Citizens of Everywhere by : Rosalind Parr
Download or read book Citizens of Everywhere written by Rosalind Parr and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citizens of Everywhere traces the international careers of a cohort of extraordinary Indian women leaders during the final decades of colonial rule. Working in pursuit of the dual goals of Indian independence and women's rights, the women featured in this book established productive transnational connections to gain influence on the world stage, all against the backdrop of momentous events in India and beyond. In doing so, they contributed a distinct set of ideas to global conversations about rights and citizenship. By bringing this transnational activism to light, the author offers new perspectives on Indian nationalism. More broadly the book establishes Indian women as actors in the global histories of women's rights and international movements during the era of decolonisation.

Book Synopsis The Life and Death of Mahatma Gandhi by : Robert Payne
Download or read book The Life and Death of Mahatma Gandhi written by Robert Payne and published by ibooks. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the heroic story of the man whose non-violent movement transformed his native India both spiritually and politically as it impelled the nation along the road to independence. With consummate skill, in a narration that never flags in vividness and drama, Robert Payne re-creates Mahatma Gandhi both as a spiritual and historical force and as a living personality. When in January, l948, Gandhi was assassinated in Delhi by a fanatic, his death sent shock waves around the world. For two generations he had been the conscience of his country and the world. Planting the idea of non-violence firmly in men’s minds, he had not only conquered India but also changed the landscape of the human heart. In the tradition of his best-selling biographies of Lenin and Schweitzer, Robert Payne’s life brings Gandhi alive as a rounded personality. Beginning with the moving story of a shy, awkward boy from a provincial Indian city who married at Thirteen, then was separated from his bride for years while he read law in London, the book describes Gandhi’s life as a successful barrister in South Africa who turned his back on wealth to defend Indian settlers against discrimination and persecution. Robert Payne superbly describes Gandhi’s daring marches to aid the oppressed; his fasts and imprisonments; his historic achievements at international congresses and conferences in India and England where, clad only in shawl and loincloth, he met with prime ministers and viceroys and won their respect as he fought for the dignity and freedom of his people. “I would place Robert Payne’s book on the level of a great novel by Tolstoy, swiftly moving, panoramic, writ on the canvas of destiny and of close historical characterization,” writes Dr. Amiya Chakravarty, former private secretary of Rabindranath Tagore, who knew Gandhi personally and worked with him. “It is one of the great biographies. No finer account of Gandhi’s life and death has been written.”

Book Synopsis Imaginations of Death and the Beyond in India and Europe by : Günter Blamberger
Download or read book Imaginations of Death and the Beyond in India and Europe written by Günter Blamberger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores current images of afterlife/afterdeath and the presence of the dead in the imaginations of the living in Indian and European traditions. Specifically, it focuses on the deepest and most fundamental uncertainty of human existence---the awareness of human mortality, on which depends any assignment of meaning to earthly existence as also to notions of worldly and otherworldly salvation. This central idea is addressed in the literature, arts, audiovisual media and other cultural artefacts of the two traditions. The chapters are based on two main assumptions: First, that one cannot report on the direct experience of death; so it is only possible to speak allegorically of it. Second, in contemporary Western societies, marked by structural atheism, people look at literature, the arts and mass media to study their depiction and reading of traditionally religious questions of disease, death and the Beyond. This is in contrast to Asian civilizations whose preoccupation with death and Beyond is persistent and perhaps central to the civilizations’ highest thought. The chapters cover a wide spectrum of disciplinary approaches, from psychoanalysis to religious, anthropological, literary and film studies, from sociology and philosophy to art history, and address issues of unsettling power: comforting illusions of afterlife; the relations between afterlife and fertility; visions of technological immortalization of mankind; the problem of thinking about death after the “death of God”; socialist utopias of bodily immortality; fear of Hell and punishment; different concepts in relating the living and the dead; near-death experiences; and cultural practices of spiritualism, occultism and suicide.
