Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shall I Be a Daily Communicant?: A Chat With Young People The later decree contains the words: They who have care of children should make every effort that, after their first Communion, these children approach the Holy Table often and even daily, if it is possible, as Jesus Christ and Mother Church desire. What seems implied in this passage, but that the Pope and the framers of the decree hoped to attain what lay so near their heart, the daily Communion of the young, mainly through the co-operation of priests, parents and teachers? And in fact it would seem quite evident, that the Pope's cherished desire in regard to the tenderest portion of his ock, can be fully brought home to them only through those who have immediate charge of them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mind of the Holy See once more plainly declared itself by the mouth of Leo XIII. In his splendid encyclical on the Holy Eucharist, issued on the Feast of Corpus Christi, 1902, the late Pontiff left .us-almost as his last will and testament-some golden words concerning our Saviour's dying legacy of love: "It was towards the close of His mortal life that Christ our Lord left this memorial of His measureless love for men-this powerful means of support ' for the life of the world.' And precisely for this reason We, being so soon to depart this life, can wish for nothing better than that it may be granted to Us to stir up and foster in the hearts of all men the disposition of mindful gratitude and due devotion towards this wonderful Sacrament." Again "But the chief aim of our efforts must be that the frequent reception of the Eucharist 'may be everywhere revived among Catholic people. For this is the lesson which is taught us by the example of the primitive Church, by the decrees of Councils, by the authority of the Fathers and holy men in all ages. Accordingly, all prejudices to the contrary, all those vain fears to which so many yield, and their specious excuses for abstaining from the Holy Eucharist, must be wholly put aside" In the above forcible words of our late Holy Father we have the answer to a possible difficulty: "How is it that the Church has only awoke at this eleventh hour to the ilnportance of frequent Communion? This advocacy of frequent Conlmunion is a new thing." Clearly it is no new thing. The Church has" by decrees of Councils, by the authority of the Fathers and holy men in all ages," taught the immense importance of the practice. But those "prejudices," those "vain fears," those "specious excuses," have to a large extent hindered the faithful from learning the lesson as they should. A contrary practice-as the decree of December, 1905, tells us-has " survived the declarations of the Holy See." In 1900, Leo XIII. had already expressed his mind in similar terms in a Brief addressed to Pere Coube, S.J., a zealous champion of Frequent Communion. " Those who are labouring to strengthen the faith and to reform morals are well advised when they make it their endeavour to exhort the faithful to approach the Holy Table as often as possible; for the more frequently one receives this Holy Sacrament, the more abundant are the fruits of holiness derived therefrom." In February, 1905, our Holy Father, Pope Pius X., caused to be issued an indulgenced prayer" For the spread of the practice of daily Communion." In this devout petition the suppliant is made to entreat our Divine Lord in these terms: "Pour out Thy Divine Spirit in order that those who, through Thy gift, are already living the divine life of grace may, when able, devoutly approach Thy Holy Table daily. So that, receiving through daily Communion the remedy for their daily venial sins, and nourishing in themselves day by day the life of Thy grace, and thus ever purifying their souls more and more, they may at length be united in securing the life of the blessed with Thee." The fact that this prayer has been sanctioned by the Holy Father wonld of itself suffice to prove his own ardent desire to see daily Communion propagated amongst his children. But the grant of an indulgence (300 days) once a day for the devout use of the prayer made it still more plain that the Holy See purported to lead Catholics back as far as possible to primitive Eucharistic practice. The decided step taken by our Holy Father in that direction is but one more application of the motto which he pu blic1y adopted upon ascending the pontifical throne Instaurardc omnia in Christo-" To renew all things in Christ."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frequent and Daily Communion: According to the Recent Decrees of the Holy See The recent decrees of the Holy See, like all other decrees affecting the administration and reception of the Sacraments, call for some explanation or theological treatment, so that they may be the better understood in their relation to the existing laws of the Church, and in their application to the lives of the faithful in general, and especially to the lives of those who have consecrated themselves to God in religion. The practice of frequent and daily Com munion is recommended to all who are properly disposed, and the dispositions required for this practice on the part of the recipients are clearly prescribed and settled once for all. Lest any one should make the mistake of imagining that the decrees changed anything with regard to the necessary dispositions of soul and body required for each and every Communion, I considered it useful to give chapters explanatory of these dispositions, that the readers may be remindedof them, and that they may the better under stand the dispositions required for frequent and daily Communion. The decree on daily Communion is explained fully, and its several clauses are treated under distinct headings; afterwards a short explana tion is given of the decree by which daily communicants may gain all indulgences without being obliged to confess weekly. In order that the faithful may be influenced and persuaded to co-operate with the efforts of our Holy Father in promoting this devout practice of frequent and daily Communion, no stronger or more efficacious motives or reasons can be assigned than the fruits and effects of a worthy Communion upon our souls and bodies, and therefore two chapters are devoted to their explanation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let us consider this excerpt: “"If," writes Cassian, "the sight of our sins tends to keep us away from daily Communion, the confidence of finding in it a remedy for all our evils ought to make us hunger for it, profoundly convinced that, if we are unworthy of the favour, the help is essential for us; otherwise, I do not see who would dare to communicate even once a year. And there are some who keep away, and do themselves great harm. The reason of their mistake is that they only look at the excellence of the Sacraments; then they think they must be holy before they approach them, instead of reflecting that it is the Sacraments which make the soul holy. Thus, in trying to avoid pride, they fall into it, because, when at last they come to Communion, they judge themselves worthy to participate."”This also is important: “It will be of little use to exhort parishioners "frequently and with great zeal" to practise frequent and daily Communion if we do not remove practical difficulties which effectually hinder them, or some of them, from doing what we inculcate. Except Holy Communion be obtainable before Mass, easily and without any deterrent formalities being required, frequent Communion will become, not necessarily, indeed, the privilege of the more virtuous, but certainly of the well- to-do or leisured classes. In any larger congregation, especially in towns and cities, there will generally be a certain number whose duties and occupations would admit of their communicating before Mass, and so carrying out the Pope's wishes, but who would be quite unable to stay until the end of the Holy Sacrifice for even a modest thanksgiving. Then, again, there are really delicate people, who cannot remain fasting for long after rising, and who would otherwise need to have Communion brought to them in their houses. Yet many of these people may be just the ones whose daily surroundings place them in considerable temptation, or who require special grace to sanctify their ill-health, and whose souls, therefore, stand in peculiar need of their" daily Bread."” Pope Saint Pius X's decree affects the office of confessor and spiritual director: “All the chief commentators on the famous Decree are agreed that the confessor has now no longer any right to forbid or to permit Communion in the case of a penitent who fulfils the two conditions contained in Article I. of the Decree. The penitent, though he is exhorted to perform the act of submission of consulting the confessor (for he no longer needs "permission," since he has it already from the Supreme Spiritual Director of all the faithful, the Pope), is not bound under pain of any sin whatever to seek the advice, nor to follow it when received.”

Book excerpt: In this little book the writer has aimed to present, in brief and simple form, sound principles which may assist the young in deciding their future course of life. The subject of vocation, as it is called, has suffered much, during the last two or three centuries, at the hands of rigorist authors, who so hedged the approach to religious life with difficulties and restrictions, as to frighten or repel many aspiring hearts from it.
