Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's History of King Henry the Fifth The notes on textual variations have been either omitted or abridged, as the text of the play is now virtually settled. For most of the Critical Comments in the former edition I have substituted matter of my own, much of which is drawn from familiar lectures prepared for audiences of teachers and students. Minor Changes have been made throughout the Notes, and many new ones have been added, includ ing a considerable number in place of those referring to my former editions of other plays. The book is now absolutely complete in itself. I believe that teachers will prefer the new edition to the old one; but both can be used, without serious inconvenience, in the same Class or club. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Third Part of King Henry the Sixth I shall now leave the opinions of others and summarise my examination of the text, or texts, before us; and proceed at once to look for evidence of those other coadjutors, Peele, Marlowe and Greene, merely premising that there is much less of any writer (other than Shakespeare) in Part III., as well as in its foundation play, than was the case in Part II. And its early form. In T he True Tragedy I see a little of Marlowe, less of Greene, more of Peele and much more of Shakespeare. And in the final play there is yet more of Shakespeare and yet less of the others. Whatever may have been the original plan, the committee seems to have dissolved and left him in possession, with Peele to advise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's History of the Life and Death of King John Mathewes for Thomas Dewe, and brought out in 1622, it was ascribed to W. Shakespeare. This was doubtless a mere trick of the publishers to help the sale of the book, as the style proves conclusively that Shakespeare had no part in its authorship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of William Shakespeare, Vol. 7: King John; Taming of the Shrew King John was first printed in the First Folio, where it occupies the first place in the division of Histories. The ten plays belonging to this series form as it were a great national Epic on the crises in English History from the reign of Richard II to that of Richard III, with King John and Henry VIII respectively as the Prologue and Epilogue of the whole. The Editors of the Folio were guided absolutely by chronological sequence in their ar rangement of these plays: hence the place of King John. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Hudson Shakespeare: King Richard the Second While it is important that the principle of mum cuz'gue be attended to so far as is possible in matters of research and scholarship, it is becoming more and more difficult to give every man his own in Shakespearian annotation. The amount of material accumulated is so great that the identity-origin of much important comment and suggestion is either wholly lost or so crushed out of Shape as to be beyond recognition. Instructive significance perhaps attaches to this in editing the works of one who quietly made so much of materials gath ered by others. But the list of authorities given on page xlvii will indicate the chief source of much that has gone to enrich the value of this edition. Especial acknowledgment is here made of the obligations to Dr. William Aldis Wright and Dr. Horace Howard Furness, whose work in the collation of Quartos, Folios, and the more important English and Amer ican editions of Shakespeare has been of so great value to all subsequent editors and investigators. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Tales From Shakespeare Although in the following pages I have chosen those plays, or most of them, which Charles and Mary Lamb omitted from their Tales from Shake speare, and although I have. Taken a title very like theirs, my attempt has not been to round off or tag a conclusion to their inimitable work. They, as wise judges of what their book should be, found that a certain class of play lay outside their purpose. It is just these plays - the historical ones - which, with a different purpose, are here cast into narrative form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Richard the Second: The First Quarto, 1597 Thus the first uarto, 1597; in those of 1598 and 1608, and in the folio which appears to ave been printed from the last mentioned quarto, hear was substituted in the fourth line for cheer an alteration which wasad in all the subsequent copies, till the true reading was noticed in the Appendix to my former edition. This passage furnishes an evident proof of the value of first editions, and also shows at how very early a period the revisers of Shakespeare's pieces began to tamper with his text, under the notion of improving it, or of cor recting imaginary errors of the press; of which kind of temerity the edition of his Lucrece in 1616 is a very remarkable instance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plays of Shakespeare: King Henry Vi, Second Part Shakespeare was not the only dramatist in Eliza beth's reign who could write vigorous lines of dramatic poetry: It does not at all follow that in an Old play to which Shakespeare may have contributed, all the best lines were of his writing. It was not by the mere writing of good verses that Shakespeare grew to be the master-poet of the world; and when he revised these plays on the most desolating Of our English civil wars, he had not reached the fulness of his power. He was simply helping to lay stress upon the miseries of civil war, at a time when many Englishmen began to dread that there might be civil war again, arising out of rival claims to the throne after the death Of Queen Elizabeth.
