This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakspeare's Delineations of Insanity, Imbecility, and Suicide The extent and accuracy of the medical, physiological, and psychological knowledge displayed in the dramas of William Shakspeare, like the knowledge there manifested on all matters upon which the rays of his mighty genius fell, has excited the wonder and astonishment of all men who, since his time, have brought their minds to the investigation of these subjects, upon which so much light has been thrown by the researches of modern science. Shakspeare's knowledge extended far beyond the range of ordinary observation, and comprehended subjects such, as in our day, and we may suppose in his, were regarded as strictly professional and special. Book Synopsis Theaters of Madness by : Benjamin Reiss
Download or read book Theaters of Madness written by Benjamin Reiss and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1800s, a utopian movement to rehabilitate the insane resulted in a wave of publicly funded asylums—many of which became unexpected centers of cultural activity. Housed in magnificent structures with lush grounds, patients participated in theatrical programs, debating societies, literary journals, schools, and religious services. Theaters of Madness explores both the culture these rich offerings fomented and the asylum’s place in the fabric of nineteenth-century life, reanimating a time when the treatment of the insane was a central topic in debates over democracy, freedom, and modernity. Benjamin Reiss explores the creative lives of patients and the cultural demands of their doctors. Their frequently clashing views turned practically all of American culture—from blackface minstrel shows to the works of William Shakespeare—into a battlefield in the war on insanity. Reiss also shows how asylums touched the lives and shaped the writing of key figures, such as Emerson and Poe, who viewed the system alternately as the fulfillment of a democratic ideal and as a kind of medical enslavement. Without neglecting this troubling contradiction, Theaters of Madness prompts us to reflect on what our society can learn from a generation that urgently and creatively tried to solve the problem of mental illness.
Book Synopsis Ophelia and Victorian Visual Culture by : Kimberly Rhodes
Download or read book Ophelia and Victorian Visual Culture written by Kimberly Rhodes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kimberly Rhodes's interdisciplinary book is the first to explore fully the complicated representational history of Shakespeare's Ophelia during the Victorian period. In nineteenth-century Britain, the shape, function and representation of women's bodies were typically regulated and interpreted by public and private institutions, while emblematic fictional female figures like Ophelia functioned as idealized templates of Victorian womanhood. Rhodes examines the widely disseminated representations of Ophelia, from works by visual artists and writers, to interpretations of her character in contemporary productions of Hamlet, revealing her as a nexus of the struggle for the female body's subjugation. By considering a broad range of materials, including works by Anna Lea Merritt, Elizabeth Siddal, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and John Everett Millais, and paying special attention to images women produced, Rhodes illuminates Ophelia as a figure whose importance crossed class and national boundaries. Her analysis yields fascinating insights into 'high' and mass culture and enables transnational comparisons that reveal the compelling associations among Ophelia, gender roles, body image and national identity.
Book Synopsis Retreat into the Mind by : Ekbert Faas
Download or read book Retreat into the Mind written by Ekbert Faas and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here Ekbert Faas examines the complex interrelationships among the fields of early psychiatry, poetry, and aesthetics through an in-depth study of the Victorian dramatic monologue and its Romantic antecedents. Discussing the work of over thirty major and minor poets, he focuses on what Victorian critics viewed as an unprecedented psychological school of poetry related to early psychiatry and rooted in the poetic "science of feelings" (Wordsworth). This broad historical perspective enables Faas to redefine our current terminology regarding the dramatic monologue and to document the extent to which early psychiatry shaped the poetry, poetics, and general frame of mind of the Victorians. "In the nineteenth century, English poetry began to explore the psyche in ways contemporaries recognized as new. Wordsworth and Coleridge pioneered what Arnold, Tennyson, and Browning continued. Professor Faas painstakingly documents this, and reactions to it, with reference to simultaneous psychiatric work. Fascinating."--Encounter Originally published in 1989. Book Synopsis Representations of Death in Nineteenth-Century US Writing and Culture by : Lucy Frank
Download or read book Representations of Death in Nineteenth-Century US Writing and Culture written by Lucy Frank and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the famous deathbed scene of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Little Eva to Mark Twain's parodically morbid poetess Emmeline Grangerford, a preoccupation with human finitude informs the texture of nineteenth-century US writing. This collection traces the vicissitudes of this cultural preoccupation with the subject of death and examines how mortality served paradoxically as a site on which identity and subjectivity were productively rethought. Contributors from North America and the United Kingdom, representing the fields of literature, theatre history, and American studies, analyze the sexual, social, and epistemological boundaries implicit in nineteenth-century America's obsession with death, while also seeking to give a voice to the strategies by which these boundaries were interrogated and displaced. Topics include race- and gender-based investigations into the textual representation of death, imaginative constructions and re-constructions of social practice with regard to loss and memorialisation, and literary re-conceptualisations of death forced by personal and national trauma.
