Sometimes it’s love at first sight, on both sides—but not always. The right way for a child to approach a dog to ensure that the first connection is a complete success begins with this question to the owner: “May I pet your dog?” Using Harry the dachshund as a gentle guide, Stephanie Calmenson addresses this valuable yet overlooked topic with care and precision, and Jan Ormerod’s warm illustrations portray a wide variety of breeds and personalities and depict situations that are realistic but never scary. Unique and straightforward, this is the essential guide to bringing children and dogs together—for kids and parents alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of classic stories was not compiled to be just another prizewinning book of humor. However, for the majority of individuals who get this book to read and enjoy as one of the funniest collections of groaners in existence today, it will be just that. You'll get the book, read it, get sick with laughter (even though you don't understand many of the stories), and then display it proudly in your bookcase along with the other "best sellers" you've collected over the years. About Harvey Martin I grew up in South St. Louis in an ethnic neighborhood just north of a German area know as "down by the Bevois Mill, where the street car makes da bend in da track, aint it yet" My greatest accomplishment was graduating from Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in the early sixties. Actually, that was my second greatest accomplishment, with my wife, children and grandchildren being the most significant. After graduating as a metallurgist, I left St. Louis and its terrible accent to go and make steel in Gary, IN. My resume includes that of an engineer, an entrepreneur, a writer, a golfer, an inventor, a Shaggy Dog storyteller supreme and light hauling when I can get it. My greatest downside is procrastination, but I just could not decide where to state that fact. That attribute completely explains why it has taken over 25 years to complete this project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been books about dogs since books began -- manuals on training and raising them, stories featuring dogs, and memoirs seen through the eyes of dogs. Lately, there has been a rash of books that purport to tell us what dogs are thinking, such as the bestselling What Dogs Are Thinking. This is a book about a Jewish boy and his sled dogs -- also a couple of wolves, a parrot or two...and Pinkwater's uncle...and his father. Daniel Pinkwater, prodigious author of books for children, popular commentator on National Public Radio, and dog trainer to the stars, is unclear about what dogs are thinking. In fact, he appears to be completely baffled by them. He considers himself lucky that his dog does not foul the carpet, bite people, or run in traffic. Unlike every other dog book ever written, this one does not make the reader feel more stupid than the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brand new collection of short stories from the slightly barking imagination of Neil Robinson. Each tall tail/tale, he promises, is absolutely true - but then, if that's the case, why has he called them 'Shaggy Dog Stories'? Perhaps because life is one long shaggy dog story and the tales in this collection contain at least a kernel - or maybe that should be kennel - of truth, as best he understands it, anyway. Which is not to say that any of these stories are 'preachy'. Far from it; they are designed, first and foremost, to entertain. Should one or two lead you to ponder on life, truth and relationships, well that's a bonus, surely. So, enjoy exercising each of these shaggy dogs; maybe one will even bring back a stick for you.
