Book excerpt: Poet and novelist Hiromi Goto effortlessly blends wry, observational slice-of-life literary fiction with poetic magical realism in the tender and surprising graphic novel Shadow Life, with haunting art from debut artist Ann Xu. When Kumiko’s well-meaning adult daughters place her in an assisted living home, the seventy-six-year-old widow gives it a try, but it’s not where she wants to be. She goes on the lam and finds a cozy bachelor apartment, keeping the location secret even while communicating online with her eldest daughter. Kumiko revels in the small, daily pleasures: decorating as she pleases, eating what she wants, and swimming in the community pool. But something has followed her from her former residence—Death’s shadow. Kumiko’s sweet life is shattered when Death’s shadow swoops in to collect her. With her quick mind and sense of humor, Kumiko, with the help of friends new and old, is prepared for the fight of her life. But how long can an old woman thwart fate?

Book excerpt: Shadow Life is an exploration of the human shadow and the hidden side of our personalities. It looks at the masks we wear, where these masks come from, and how we can take them off. The book explores how we can better manage our relationships with shame, guilt, and trauma in order to remove the Mask that the world has asked us to wear (and that we forgot we were wearing) so we can live an authentic life with less drama, chaos, or BS whilst we're still around. This is a book for anybody who is waking up to the truth about themselves, the world, and reality and wants to understand the mechanics of their relationship between themselves and their own 'stuff' so they can let go of the past, move into their potential, and live a real, fulfilling life as their undivided selves.Shadow Life is a book about the power of Unconditional Self-Acceptance and the strength, creativity, and energy that comes from unleashing the hidden sides of ourselves in alignment with the truth.

We all have shadows—the unlit part of our ego that is hidden and never goes away, but merely—and often painfully—turns up in unexpected places. This powerful work from the acclaimed Jungian analyst and bestselling author of Inner Work and We explores our need to “own” our own shadow: learn what it is, how it originates, and how it impacts our daily lives. It is only when we accept and honor the shadow within us that we can channel its energy in a positive way and find balance.

Book excerpt: A patriotic love story, an unlikely romantic adventure, behind the scenes in aviation history. Based on real life. Joe Ware was a man of national note, a conservative Republican Christian 40 years older, and I was private, a liberal Democrat Jewish transsexual. He was former Lockheed Skunk Works, who helped make the first two Air Force Ones for President Eisenhower and who was Depart-ment Manager of Engineering Flight Test over the U-2, and the SR-71; I was a social worker and, before that, in the National Security Agency, NSGA, NSOC, SIGINT, Ft. Meade, Mary-land. Shadow Life: Aerospace, Love, and Secrets is a beautiful romance between two people in a mixed marriage, fighting to stay together, corrects popular misconceptions about transgender and transsexual living, and makes a suggestion. I've been in this since the 1970s, I've lived the life, and I've helped others. Inspired by Kenji Yoshino (Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights, 2006), I'm concerned about the current direction of the transgender paradigm: It's still hiding key stigmata. I know where the bodies are buried. I've done it myself. I tried to keep my sexuality away from other people's concern, but there is no such thing as actual stealth living. People knew. I wouldn't discuss it, and my husband and I caught hell for years. Now I see most transgender people doing the same thing in another way, unwittingly enabling prejudice and opposition they don't handle any better than I did. It's not the fact they're transgender they're hiding but what they really need or desire. The transgender movement is winning access to places most don't even want to go, where dis-robing is required. If they can't say it, they can't show it. So they don't go, marginalizing them-selves into a less than equal integration, furthering lack of awareness, preventing equal em-ployment, and where it's discovered during sex, possibly even incurring surprise violence or murder. Trans people can never fully integrate into society if we're embarrassed to embrace ourselves. Leaders of the social movement cannot advocate for something they downplay. They need to bring these issues to the fore, not leave them to serve as doubt and denial, not relegate them to the periphery or treat questions as offensive. Rhetoric must be as clear in media as it would be in locker rooms so that those who are interested may more fully integrate. I've waited 20 years for leaders to do so. Most of them don't, so I did, herein. Shadow Life is explicit.

Book excerpt: Augusto Pinochet was the most important Third World dictator of the Cold War, and perhaps the most ruthless. In The Dictator's Shadow, United Nations Ambassador Heraldo Munoz takes advantage of his unmatched set of perspectives -- as a former revolutionary who fought the Pinochet regime, as a respected scholar, and as a diplomat -- to tell what this extraordinary figure meant to Chile, the United States, and the world. Pinochet's American backers saw his regime as a bulwark against Communism; his nation was a testing ground for U.S.-inspired economic theories. Countries desiring World Bank support were told to emulate Pinochet's free-market policies, and Chile's government pension even inspired President George W. Bush's plan to privatize Social Security. The other baggage -- the assassinations, tortures, people thrown out of airplanes, mass murders of political prisoners -- was simply the price to be paid for building a modern state. But the questions raised by Pinochet's rule still remain: Are such dictators somehow necessary? Horrifying but also inspiring, The Dictator's Shadow is a unique tale of how geopolitical rivalries can profoundly affect everyday life.

Book excerpt: Shadow's life changed forever when his brother Daniel ran away. What will happen now that Daniel is home again? For fifteen-year-old Shadow Thompson, life ended seven years ago—the night his older brother Daniel ran away from home. That's when Shadow stopped depending on other people and turned inward, relying only on himself. But now Daniel is back and he stands accused of murder. Shadow's anger at his brother, his parents' struggle to cope with the sudden return of their son, and Daniel's own feelings of guilt create an emotional undertow that threatens to consume the family. But as Shadow begins to open up to new friends, he slowly learns to trust and finally, to forgive. Now the Thompsons may get a second chance at being a family. Award-winning author S. L. Rottman once again crafts a powerful story that depicts the complexity of human relationships within the framework of a troubled adolescent's struggle to make sense of the people and the world around him.

Book excerpt: In 1924 when thirty-two-year-old Edmond Landry kissed his family good-bye and left for the leprosarium in Carville, Louisiana, leprosy, now referred to as Hansen's Disease, stigmatized and disfigured but did not kill. Those with leprosy were incarcerated in the federal hospital and isolated from family and community. Phones were unavailable, transportation was precarious, and fear was rampant. Edmond entered the hospital (as did his four other siblings), but he did not surrender to his fate. He fought with his pen and his limited energy to stay connected to his family and to improve living conditions for himself and other patients. Claire Manes, Edmond's granddaughter, lived much of her life gripped by the silence surrounding her grandfather. When his letters were discovered, she became inspired to tell his story through her scholarship and his writing. Out of the Shadow of Leprosy: The Carville Letters and Stories of the Landry Family presents her grandfather's letters and her own studies of narrative and Carville during much of the twentieth century. The book becomes a testament to Edmond's determination to maintain autonomy and dignity in the land of the living dead. Letters and stories of the other four siblings further enhance the picture of life in Carville from 1919 to 1977.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's in a shadow? Menace, seduction, or salvation? Immaterial but profound, shadows lurk everywhere in literature and the visual arts, signifying everything from the treachery of appearances to the unfathomable power of God. From Plato to Picasso, from Rembrandt to Welles and Warhol, from Lord of the Rings to the latest video game, shadows act as central players in the drama of Western culture. Yet because they work silently, artistic shadows often slip unnoticed past audiences and critics. Conceived as an accessible introduction to this elusive phenomenon, Grasping Shadows is the first book that offers a general theory of how all shadows function in texts and visual media. Arguing that shadow images take shape within a common cultural field where visual and verbal meanings overlap, William Sharpe ranges widely among classic and modern works, revealing the key motifs that link apparently disparate works such as those by Fra Angelico and James Joyce, Clementina Hawarden and Kara Walker, Charles Dickens and Kumi Yamashita. Showing how real-world shadows have shaped the meanings of shadow imagery, Grasping Shadows guides the reader through the techniques used by writers and artists to represent shadows from the Renaissance onward. The last chapter traces how shadows impact the art of the modern city, from Renoir and Zola to film noir and projection systems that capture the shadows of passers-by on streets around the globe. Extending his analysis to contemporary street art, popular songs, billboards, and shadow-theatre, Sharpe demonstrates a practical way to grasp the "dark side" that looms all around us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How might life look if we lived as though eternity is now? Many of us have fallen into a trap, thinking that God and His kingdom are “up there somewhere” as if He and His dwelling place are distant in reach and in time. But, Jesus came teaching a very different reality. To every physical aspect of creation, there is a spiritual counterpart. When God created the world, He called it very good. He declared it to be sacred by placing His own image in the world through humanity. He charged humanity to fill the earth, to take dominion, to declare who God is. So, the here and now, this present reality…this is sacred. The tangible is not evil; it is a gift from God. And yet, it’s not the end all be all. It is just the beginning, a glimpse, a shadow of the greater reality. Here we live in the sacred shadow, but one day, when we pass through the veil of perception which blurs our present reality, when we step over the thread of time which is a boundary for now, but won’t be a boundary forever and certainly isn’t a boundary for God, we will step out of the sacred shadow and into the sacred substance. In Courtney Cohen’s latest book, The Sacred Shadow, explore what reality truly is, encounter the near presence of God, challenge your perception of eternity, and discover the sacredness that exists now during our brief time spent in this shadow-land. What Leaders Are Saying About The Sacred Shadow… “The Sacred Shadow is the perfect book to read when trying to make sense of the world we live in. It invites us to discover and understand that eternity is our real home, and we are just passing through earth, pilgrims headed to our glorious promised land. I urge you to read on. And, if you’re like me and you get excited at the thought of the supernatural heaven, the spirit world, and holy mysteries being revealed, you will likely call The Sacred Shadow one of your favorites.” Christine D’Clario International Worship Leader & Award-Winning Artist Author of Prodigal Heart “How does an infinite God go about communicating eternal spiritual Truth to the limited hearts and minds of the people He loves? How does a wise father teach young children his ways? In The Sacred Shadow, Courtney Cohen has put her finger on the method of God: hiding every secret and each mystery like Easter Eggs in tufts of grass – barely hidden in the shadows, where they can be found by those who seek them. Every shadow is cast by a great light shining upon a solid reality, and Cohen insightfully redirects our eyes from each shadow to the solid Truth it represents – and to the Great Light that shines behind each of them. Prepare yourself to gather treasures, because Cohen is leading us on the hunt, and there is wisdom to share for those who seek it.” Pastor Zach Neese Worship Pastor, Gateway Church Author of How to Worship a King

Book excerpt: The Summer of Shadow by Pat Payne Trafford Publishing reviewed by Caroline Blaha-Black THE US REVIEW OF BOOKS "That evening Shadow was not inclined to fly to the roof to seek a roost due to his drooping or re-sprained wing, so we resurrected his intermediate cage and placed it on the ledge of the front bedroom bay window where he spent the night in safety." Shadow, a fledgling crow, was rescued and rehabilitated by the author and released back into the wild. Payne shares the crow's journey, highlighting Shadow's many trials and tribulationsbeing rescued, learning to fly, meeting other crows, and finally making full transition back into the wilderness. The author discovered the injured young crow on the forest floor, and he took him home to rehabilitate him, along with his wife, Dot. Payne describes with much delight the few months that he spent with the bird and the many habits and behaviors that the crow developed while with his human family. Crows are known for their intelligence and the ability to figure things out, which is highlighted in this book: Shadow stashing food, communicating with Payne to make his presence known, pestering the family dog with a stick, or bringing other crows over for a visit, there is no shortage of clever things that Shadow entertains the reader with. Also interesting to note are the first days of flight and meeting other crows around the author's home atop a Missouri Ozark ridge. Especially touching is Shadow's interaction with the author and his subsequent visits to the author's home upon his complete return to the wild. Colored photographs of Shadow, the people who raised him, and Murphy, the family dog, are scattered throughout the book, making it a visual treat for the reader. This is a great read for the lovers of crows and ravens, wildlife rehabilitators, and anyone with the interest in learning more about birds in general.
