Book excerpt: In the High Kingdom of Danton Aurelius, magisters from across the known world are gathering for an unusual meeting. The High King's son is dying of an apparently incurable wasting disease, and he has charged them with providing an explanation and a cure. There is a mystery here, but not the one the High King thinks: the magisters know the cause of the prince's illness but they dare not reveal it for fear that it will expose the secret at the heart of their order. No, the mystery is not what is responsible, but who. . . Now the magisters must embark upon a manhunt, racing against time, before the High King learns the truth. But they have not counted on the young prince's determination to control his own fate, nor on the existence of Kamala, a young woman schooled in their own arts, who will soon shake the world to its very roots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was there such a thing as a modern notion of race in the English Renaissance, and, if so, was skin color its necessary marker? In fact, early modern texts described human beings of various national origins—including English—as turning white, brown, tawny, black, green, or red for any number of reasons, from the effects of the sun's rays or imbalance of the bodily humors to sexual desire or the application of makeup. It is in this cultural environment that the seventeenth-century London Gazette used the term "black" to describe both dark-skinned African runaways and dark-haired Britons, such as Scots, who are now unquestioningly conceived of as "white." In Shades of Difference, Sujata Iyengar explores the cultural mythologies of skin color in a period during which colonial expansion and the slave trade introduced Britons to more dark-skinned persons than at any other time in their history. Looking to texts as divergent as sixteenth-century Elizabethan erotic verse, seventeenth-century lyrics, and Restoration prose romances, Iyengar considers the construction of race during the early modern period without oversimplifying the emergence of race as a color-coded classification or a black/white opposition. Rather, "race," embodiment, and skin color are examined in their multiple contexts—historical, geographical, and literary. Iyengar engages works that have not previously been incorporated into discussions of the formation of race, such as Marlowe's "Hero and Leander" and Shakespeare's "Venus and Adonis." By rethinking the emerging early modern connections between the notions of race, skin color, and gender, Shades of Difference furthers an ongoing discussion with originality and impeccable scholarship.

Book excerpt: -Regardless of your, sex, colour, race or creed you will find something in my stories you can identify with. -Although purely fictitious these are situations or events individuals may encounter in their lifetime.-As beautiful souls sometimes our lives can be blighted or blessed by situations or events.- The moral in most of my stories is that 'the music of life' will take on different themes, rhythms and moods, however throughout the highs and the lows as individuals we should carry on and learn from each and every experience. - More importantly the key message is that 'Life' is like a 'Beautiful Rose' but you must be strong when you find some thorns, because a 'Rose' always comes with thorns. -The soul is strengthened through life experiences, love, happiness, trials, suffering and through it all we build character, gain wisdom and fundamentally develop into more wholesome individuals.

Book excerpt: The New York Times #1 best-selling series. The movie adaptation of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is now a major motion picture from visionary director Tim Burton, starring Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Ella Purnell, Samuel L. Jackson, and Judi Dench. Like its predecessors, Library of Souls blends thrilling fantasy with never-before-published vintage photography to create a one-of-a-kind reading experience. A boy with extraordinary powers. An army of deadly monsters. An epic battle for the future of peculiardom. The adventure that began with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and continued in Hollow City comes to a thrilling conclusion with Library of Souls. As the story opens, sixteen-year-old Jacob discovers a powerful new ability, and soon he’s diving through history to rescue his peculiar companions from a heavily guarded fortress. Accompanying Jacob on his journey are Emma Bloom, a girl with fire at her fingertips, and Addison MacHenry, a dog with a nose for sniffing out lost children. They’ll travel from modern-day London to the labyrinthine alleys of Devil’s Acre, the most wretched slum in all of Victorian England. It’s a place where the fate of peculiar children everywhere will be decided once and for all.

Book excerpt: It's 1969, and Claire and Jack's first encounter results in an unwanted pregnancy. Married at sixteen, Claire's naïveté leaves her unprepared to deal with Jack's infidelity and controlling personality. She harbors pain and resentment deep inside for years but vows never to leave in order to keep her family together. But in 2001, a sudden stroke claims Jack's life and sends Claire into a mental breakdown. Fueled by insecurity and fear, Claire makes the fateful decision to leave her family—three children and four grandchildren—believing they will be better off without her. Four years later, just when her family is starting to heal, Claire comes back, healed and eager to make amends. The lives of her children—Sarah, Danni, and Joe—are turned upside down once again, as they must decide whether to forgive their mother and forge a new relationship or move on with their lives as though she no longer exists. Michele Vargo's Shades of Sin will keep you reading into the wee hours of the night, wondering how Sarah, Danni, and Joe will receive their estranged mother's homecoming. You'll find that second chances just may be given, even in the midst of the many Shades of Sin.
