From the initial stages of infatuation and blossoming love to the decision to marry and the inevitable challenges that follow, each story reflects the myriad ways in which marriage is perceived and lived. Some characters see marriage as a solution to financial woes, believing it can provide stability and security. Others view it as a convenient escape from personal responsibility, or as a social trophy to enhance their status. There are also characters who fear commitment and seek the freedom of an open marriage, and those who enter marriage with pure intentions, only to find themselves at a crossroads of expectation and reality. Despite these varying perspectives, the essence of Many Shades of Marriage is to reveal the profound spiritual significance of this ancient institution. Beyond societal expectations and personal gratification, marriage offers a unique path for soul evolution. Personal accountability plays a big part in handling challenges in marriage, just like anywhere else. Marriage, the sacred institution, cannot be held accountable for individual misconceptions about roles and responsibilities; balancing personal ambitions and playing the roles with aplomb is no easy task. True growth and transformation occur through deep commitment and contemplation shared by two individuals. When couples engage in marriage as friends and partners, they evolve individually and create a nurturing environment for the next generation.

Book excerpt: Shades of Love: Portraits of Successful Marriages is a beautiful depiction of couples who have withstood the test of time and illustrate that true love really does exist! The idea was born out of the co-authors desire to find the secret to maintaining a strong and happy marriage. During their quest for relationship advice they decided to only seek counsel from those with happy, respectful and nurturing long-term relationships. As a result, they gained valuable insight from the featured couples with over 500 years of combined experience and they discovered that it takes more than love to make marriage last a lifetime. Each chapter pays tribute to a different couple ranging from 75 years to 10 years of marriage and includes their photograph, personal love story, secrets to their success along with their advice for other couples and singles. The stories are engaging, inspirational and insightful as they highlight each couple's commitment to making their marriage work for better or for worse.

Book excerpt: It's the fall of 1986, and Julian Wainwright, an aspiring writer, arrives at Graymont College in New England. Here he meets Carter Heinz, with whom he develops a strong but ambivalent friendship, and beautiful Mia Mendelsohn, with whom he falls in love. Spurred on by a family tragedy, Julian and Mia's love affair will carry them to graduation and beyond, taking them through several college towns, over the next fifteen years. Starting at the height of the Reagan era and ending in the new millennium, Matrimony is a stunning novel of love and friendship, money and ambition, desire and tensions of faith. It is a richly detailed portrait of what it means to share a life with someone-to do it when you're young, and to try to do it afresh on the brink of middle age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was there such a thing as a modern notion of race in the English Renaissance, and, if so, was skin color its necessary marker? In fact, early modern texts described human beings of various national origins—including English—as turning white, brown, tawny, black, green, or red for any number of reasons, from the effects of the sun's rays or imbalance of the bodily humors to sexual desire or the application of makeup. It is in this cultural environment that the seventeenth-century London Gazette used the term "black" to describe both dark-skinned African runaways and dark-haired Britons, such as Scots, who are now unquestioningly conceived of as "white." In Shades of Difference, Sujata Iyengar explores the cultural mythologies of skin color in a period during which colonial expansion and the slave trade introduced Britons to more dark-skinned persons than at any other time in their history. Looking to texts as divergent as sixteenth-century Elizabethan erotic verse, seventeenth-century lyrics, and Restoration prose romances, Iyengar considers the construction of race during the early modern period without oversimplifying the emergence of race as a color-coded classification or a black/white opposition. Rather, "race," embodiment, and skin color are examined in their multiple contexts—historical, geographical, and literary. Iyengar engages works that have not previously been incorporated into discussions of the formation of race, such as Marlowe's "Hero and Leander" and Shakespeare's "Venus and Adonis." By rethinking the emerging early modern connections between the notions of race, skin color, and gender, Shades of Difference furthers an ongoing discussion with originality and impeccable scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times–bestselling author of “Our Crowd”: A novel of a powerful family, a cosmetics empire, and the dark secrets that could destroy both. Mireille “Mimi” Myerson took her grandfather’s struggling cosmetics company and turned it into an empire. But suddenly, as she prepares to launch a new perfume line, Mimi is faced with hidden threats at every turn. Her efforts to further expand the enormously successful Miray Corporation could be sabotaged from within by her own treacherous family, for there is a dangerous rot beneath the surface of the wealthy and aristocratic “Magnificent Myersons”: a dark tradition of lies, sexual perversity, and criminal activity that could undermine everything Mimi hopes to accomplish. With the discovery of her husband’s affair and the return of real estate magnate Michael Horowitz, her first and most enduring love, Mimi must determine whom she can trust—especially in light of the shocking revelations that are about to emerge regarding the birth of the Miray Corporation. In both his bestselling nonfiction (“Our Crowd”, The Right People) and fiction (Carriage Trade, The Auerbach Will) author Stephen Birmingham has demonstrated an unparalleled understanding of the ways of America’s extremely rich. This unique knowledge comes into glorious play in his blistering novel Shades of Fortune, a thrilling and unforgettable breakneck ride through the darkest passageways of wealth and success.
